Nicholas Perrin and Richard B. Hays, eds. Every time I read N. Wright I come away edified, instructed, inspired, and even transformed. This book is no exception. Paul lifting Jesus up as well. Let me explain through a cursory overview of the two parts of this book. As a product of the nineteenth annual Wheaton Theology Conference at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois held in Aprilthe volume features eight chapters responding to the work of the newly appointed chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St. Each chapter includes a brief rejoinder by Wright at the end, while each part concludes with a lengthier reflection by Wright on whither historical Jesus and whither Pauline studies in the life of the church, respectively in part I on Jesus, quite a Paul and the People of God: A Theological Dialogue with N. T. Wright lengthier—about 45 pages worth, the longest chapter of the book. Of course, this is happening in tandem with other developments such as postliberal theology and the New Perspective on Paul initiatives, the latter especially to which Wright has made his own substantive, even if also critical, contributions. The result, methodologically, is a sure-footed via media between conservativism and liberalism, between orthodoxy and historicism, between modernism and postmodernism, between biblical theology and theological interpretation, etc. To be sure, there will be detractors a plenty given all of the ground covered across the Wrightian corpus, but even if he is only half right, there are many implications for what that means for faithful Christian discipleship in our present time. And again, even if Wright is only half right, there will be even more implications to be discerned from out of the process of correcting his proposals. Tags : new perspective on paulNPP. If you are interested in what Jesus. Wright has really said, this book is a great starting point. Lastly, this book has a practical concern to it. It is not just N. Wright and Paul, or N. Wright and Jesus, but a look at how this has bearing on the church the people of God. Rather than being a series of lectures full of disembodied scholarship, offering ideas with no clear relationship to living Christianly, it is scholarship for the people of God. All of the contributors have a sense of doing their work for the church, clarifying what Jesus and Paul said and how that relates to the mission of the God carried out through the church. All in all, this a great book to pick up and aid your study of New Testament theology further. It will stimulate your thinking and point you in fresh directions for critical engagement with N. I am even less a fan of the kind of theological sniping that goes on in many quarters of evangelicalism. This book came as a delightful Jesus of pace as nine scholars thoughtfully, and sometimes critically, appraised the work of N. Wright with Wright in the room! Several essays stood out to me. One was Marianne Jesus Thompson's on the lack of material on John in Wright's work and how this can round out the portrait of Jesus in his work. Jeremy Begbie's essay on the ecclesiological implications of Wright's work drew out for me insights from Wright I hadn't seen. And the highlight was VanHoozer's discussion of Wright on justification and the proposal that the idea of union with Christ, so prominent in Pauline literature, provides a bridging idea with Reformed theology in the concept of being incorporated into Christ's righteousness, enjoying the adoption as sons. As the title suggests, the book interacts Jesus one of the most prolific NT scholars since Bultmann and Schweitzer. Like the conference, the book is divided into two parts: the first half deals with the historical Jesus and the second the historical Paul, all with an eye toward relating both to the Church.
