Mary Jaworski, Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry 2013 Annual Report | 3 MISSION To improve people’s lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community United Way of Will County is... • ACCOUNTABLE- United Way of Will County partner agencies must adhere to an annual review process led by community volunteers. These volunteers hold the agencies accountable by looking for measurable outcomes, ensuring financial integrity, and by making sure programs and services are continuing to meet the needs of our community. Thus, this committee allows us to be accountable to our donors, further ensuring that donor dollars are being utilized in the most efficient manner. • COST EFFICIENT- 89.4% of all contributions to United Way of Will County are used to support the numerous programs and services provided by our partner agencies and United Way. • $1/week provides year of school supplies for an elementary student • $2/week provides 2 sessions of developmental therapy for a child • $3/week provides 16 disaster victims with one meal • $5/week provides 13 women and their children with domestic violence services to help them recover from abuse. • EFFECTIVE- United Way of Will County supports a network of local nonprofit agencies that provide programs and services that address the most critical needs of Will County communities. Additionally, 1 out of 4 Will County residents are positively impacted by United Way Partner Agencies. Your contribution makes a difference right in your own backyard. That’s Living United! GIVE. OUTSTANDING CAMPAIGN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Frank Turk, Sr. called on local businesses for more than 70 years. He would enthusiastically ask each company and its employees to & STRONGER COMMUNITIES pledge their support for our annual United Way Campaign. He also served for many years on our Programs & Allocations Committee. Mr. Frank Turk, Sr. was a mentor and a trusted colleague. He served on numerous community organization boards and held several distinguished offices. Our United Way Board of Directors created the FRANK TURK, SR. OUTSTANDING CAMPAIGN ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in commemoration after his death in 1995. This annual award recognizes the work-place campaign that exemplifies Mr. Turk’s spirit, enthusiasm, and loyalty of “working hard” for the benefit of our United Way of Will County.     Valerie Jones begins her third season as the head women’s volleyball coach at SC State University. Jones, who joins the SC State Staff after spending the last two seasons as the head volleyball coach at Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, Ga., brings over 15 years of volleyball coaching experience to the Lady Bulldogs program. During her time at Whitewater, the Lady Wildcats appeared in back-to-back state championships and captured the 5-A Volleyball Georgia High School State Title in 2012. In 2005 Jones became the first-ever head women’s volleyball coach at Kennesaw State University. She served in that capacity through the 2009 season. Prior to that, she had a successful stint as the women’s athletic coordinator and head volleyball coach at Joliet Junior College (2002-2005). While at Joliet, Jones complied a 44-36 record for a .550 winning percentage. In her second season (2003) she guided Joliet JC to a 25-17 record, a Top 10 ranking, and a berth in the Region IV championship match. In the following year she led her team back to the Region IV title match. Jones’ coaching career has seen her spend time as the assistant volleyball coach at Northwestern University, University of California, Davis, and Utah State University. She began her college coaching career in 1996 as a graduate assistant at the University of North Dakota. In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Jones has spent several years developing athletes throughout the volleyball club ranks. From 2012 to her current appointment, she served as the head coach of the 18-1’s of the Tsunami Volleyball Club.
