Jeremy – – Notes 

 Activity type : Discussion, Listening for incorrect words.

 Level: Intermediate.

 Key Word: Bullying.

 Note: This was the third single from Pearl Jam’s 1991 debut album “Ten”. The song was written after singer read an article about a 16-year old boy, Jeremy Wade Delle, who shot himself in front of his English class in Texas. In a 2009 interview Vedder said that he felt “the need to take that small article and make something of it — to give that action, to give it reaction, to give it more importance.”

1) Write the word BULLYING on the board. Ask students to discuss what it means to them.

2) Give each student a folded copy of the worksheet. Ask them to work in pairs or groups to complete the survey (1-5) (this survey is adapted from The National Crime Prevention Society - www.ncpc.org )

3) Feedback and discuss the students’ answers.

4) Ask students to work in pairs to complete the vocabulary activity. KEY: 1-h; 2-b; 3-e; 4-c; 5-f; 6-a; 7-i; 8-g; 9-d

5) Play the song. Ask students to number the words from the vocabulary activity in the order they hear them. KEY: 1. to raise 2. maroon 3. wicked 4. “picking on the boy” 5. harmless 6. unleashed 7. “gnash his teeth” 8. jaw 9. wide

6) Ask them to unfold the worksheet and look at the lyrics. Play the song; students correct the six incorrect words.

7) Correct, and sing together.

Follow up: Ask students to prepare a presentation on bullying.
