During the late '80s and the '90s, a flurry of sadhu activism coincided with the dramatic rise of a previously insignificant political party, the Bhartiya JanataParty (BJP). As a conservative Hindu nationalist party, the BJP allied with many sadhus, came to power at the center and in many states, breaking the monopoly that the relatively secular Congress party had held for more than four decades.

  • Introduction
Introduction On 4th April, 1980 the National Executive of the Janata Party adopted a resolution prohibiting members of RSS to continue in the Janata Party. This resolution was sequel to the fears entertained by Chandrashekhar’s Group and a few Socialists who had not left the Janata Party when the split caused by Ch. Charan Singh took place and others that the erstwhile Jana Sangh would capture the party on account its mass base and large army of dedicated workers. This development was anticipated by leaders and workers of the Jana Sangh and RSS background in Janata Party. So they had asked Jana Sangh workers from all over the country to assemble at Delhi before the meeting of the National Executive of Janata Party and to be prepared for all eventualities. The resolution adopted by the National Executive of Janata Party was not acceptable to erstwhile Jana Sangh constituent and to several other leaders and persons in Janata Party who had no RSS background. The Jana Sangh constituent had sincerely worked towards the strengthening and smooth working of the Janata Party. Even though it constituted the largest single constituent of the Janata Party and had a larger popular base in the country it did not ask for proportionate share either in Janata Government or in Janata Party and was content with whatever was given to it. The Jana Sangh constituent wanted Janata Party to succeed and emerge as an alternative to Congress which had ruled the country for three decades prior to 1977. In this background, there was a feeling of regret and unhappiness as well as of good riddance and relief in the Jana Sangh 2 • Party Document Vol-10 workers.

LUCKNOW l MONDAY, JANUARY 11, 2021 l Pages 12 l 3.00 RNI NO. UPENG/2020/04393 l Vol 1 l Issue No. 59 MATH OF THE NATH Vishal Srivastav racing the footprints, the role of the Gorakhnath Math in Ram Temple movement, dates back to time im- memorial. It was during the British era in 1935 that Mahant Digvijay Nath of the Math, rolled out the movement for the Temple. Nath’s T tireless efforts resulted in success after 14 years when in 1949, Lord Ram’s idol was consecrated in Ayodhya. Digvijay Nath was present at the Math at that very moment. The reins of the Math were then handed over to Mahant Avaidyanath, who in 1984, formed the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Yagya Samiti, to bring everyone, rooting for Ram Temple, at one platform. In February, 1986, when the court ordered opening of lock of the Babri Masjid, Avaidyanath was pre- sent in Ayodhya. The Ram Temple movement gained a significant momentum when Yogi Adityanath, a fresh gradu- ate, renouncing his family life, became a monk with Nath Panth in 1992. He was a disciple of Ma- hant Avaidyanath. Adityanath soon proved his mettle and further ignited the fire for Ram Temple where it had either been doused or was never erupted. Soon, in 1996, Adityanath was heading the Gorakhnath Math. He held scores of meetings at the Math for Ram Temple. The basic agendas dis- cussed during the meetings were banning cow slaughter, uniform civil code, anti-conversion cam- paigns and so on. In the mid 90s when the Temple movement had reached a tipping point and then began to decline, it was Yogi Adityanath who plugged the holes and held the forte in Eastern Ut- tar Pradesh and never let the fire douse.

  • Religious Fascism -Yogi Raj in UP
Introduction Hindutva fanaticism is at its peak in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India. With around 44 million Muslim population which is 19.3% of the total population, UP ranks first in number of Muslims among all Indian states. UP also contributes the largest number of seats to the Indian parliament. Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) and the extreme right-wing Hindutva groups draw its water and fertiliser from anti-Muslim sentiments have made Uttar Pradesh the best turf to demonise Muslims. Appointment of Yogi Adityanath to be tried in the International Criminal Court for his racial hatred and anti-Muslim stand and crimes, as the chief minister of the state was a very strategic move to ensure that Muslim marginalisation is carried out 'democratically.' Yogi was serving as an MP and had not contested the Assembly election in 2017, yet he was made the CM of UP. Development of the state or the welfare of the people, let alone of the Muslims, of the state have never been an agenda of the present UP government since the coronation of Yogi Adityanath aka Ajay Mohan Bisht, as the 'emperor' of Uttar Pradesh. The focus of Yogi government has been on hunting Muslims raising various false allegations against them. UP Police which have ever been discredited for human rights violations and communal bias against Muslims and Dalits, crossed all limits under Yogi Raj. This booklet is a collection of data and facts from authentic news sources on the web, about the crimes of Yogi in Uttar Pradesh. The following chapters are included in the booklet 1.

  • Topic of the Week for Discussion: 23 Rd to 29Th March 201 7
Topic of the week for discussion: 23 rd to 29th March 201 7 Topic: The fringe goes ‘mainstream ’ Yogi Adityanath, the controversial hardliner advocate of Hindutva, took over as the 32nd Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh . Two Deputy Chief Ministers - Dinesh Sharma and Keshav Prasad Maurya and 47 Ministers were sworn in. Yogi Adityanath, the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is a well-known figure in the State. He made headlines in the past with his fiery brand of communal politics, promotion of the most virulent and masculinist Hindutva , the ups and downs of his relations with his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the activities of his Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV). This is perhaps the first time in India that a head of a religious institution has become the head of a political institution. This chief ministerial appointment can thus be seen as a metaphor for the cementing of the institutional relation between religion and the state under the BJP. Lord of the east In his mid-40s and a parliamentarian since the age of 26 from Gorakhpur, Mr. Adityanath is the mahant of the Gorakhnath mutt, or peeth , which for centuries, has had a large following mainly among the marginal working sections. The mutt is the seat of the Nathpanthis, who were known for their reformist bent. In the Hindutva spectrum, if the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) occupies a position to the ‘right’ of the BJP, then Mr. Adityanath occupies a position which is far to the ‘right’ of even the late VHP leader Ashok Singhal. He would be placed on the same plane as Pravin Togadia, the VHP’s current chief, but unlike him, he is not confined to the VHP but is active in electoral politics through the BJP.
