Greetings Brothers: This year, I am looking forward to working on your behalf to provide a year full of activities, Masonic and family oriented. Changing the way we operate will involve the Lodge in more family-related events. We started the year in a busy atmosphere with many open installations con- ducted by the Grand Line Officers where we saw hundreds of Brothers, their families and guests in attendance. I would like to thank those Brothers who at- tended and those who were involved in the preparations. I would like to congratulate all of our 2020 Officers and let them know that I look forward to working with them to further our Masonic Goals! I challenge those of you who have not been to Lodge on a regular basis, to give us at least one meeting or event this year. I encourage those Brothers who have not been in the lodge for quite a while to have it as one of their New Year’s resolution to visit the lodge this year and rekindle that Masonic interest. In the month of December, the Officers had the opportunity to Geary F. Laird Grand Master 2019-2020 conduct the consolidation of several lodges in two public ceremonies. The Level and the Square by , pgm, 1854 We meet upon the level and we part upon the square These words have precious meaning and are practiced everywhere Come let us contemplate them, they are worthy of a thought From the ancient times of Masonry these symbols have been taught We meet upon the level, every country, sect and creed The rich man from his mansion, the poor man from the field For wealth is not considered within our outer door And we all meet on the level upon the checkered floor. Part One of this two-part Reunion will confer the 4° - 14° on March 7. The 15° - 28° will be conferred during our stated meetings in March, April and May. On Saturday June 13, 2020 we will conclude Part Two of the Reunion, with the conferral of the 29° - 32°. Our goal is to make the Reunion easier to attend by holding both parts on Saturdays, rather than on a Friday/Saturday format. It is also intended to encourage attendance at our Stated Meetings. As we open on the 14° Lodge of Perfection, the Brothers will be able to attend and will be encouraged to attend the business meeting, as well as complete the degrees. By extending the Reunion over several months we will be able to confer more Degrees “on stage”, thus providing a deeper understanding of those Degrees. In the fall we will hold a traditional two-day Reunion honoring Ill. Brother George Guthrie Ahart, 33° beginning on Friday, November 20 and concluding Saturday, November 21, 2020. This month we will be holding our annual Grand Master’s Dinner on February 27 at 6:30 pm. This dinner is for Master Masons Only. You do not need to be a Scottish Rite Mason to attend. He was one of the three ‘greats’ in Masonic Literature at that time, along with and Albert Macke. An avid writer, Morris published, to name a few, “The Voice of Masonry and Tidings for the Craft”, a semi-monthly paper; “The Freemasons Monitor” by ; “The Prudence of Freemasonry”; “The in Kentucky”; ”The Archives of Freemasonry”; “The Trumpet, a Knight Templars Handbook“; the “American Freemason”; and “The Universal Masonic Library” which contained 53 standard works of ritual, published in 30 volumes, bound in high grade leather, and selling for $50.00 a set. Here are some short facts about our Past Grand Master, Rob Morris. Rob Morris was highly respected in his time, and frequently was requested to write poems for special Masonic occasions. His book “The Poetry of Freemasonry” containing over 400 of his compositions was published in 1884, the same year Rob Morris was named “Poet Laureate of Free- masonry”. This certainly was a crowning jewel in his life. Over 1000 Masons attended the celebration. He succeeded Scottish poet Robert Burns who was honored as Poet Laureate in in 1787. Morris’s most famous poem “The Level and the Square” has been recited by Masons in lodges throughout the Masonic world. For a copy, just email the library. Morris’s organization of a Masonic Lodge in Jerusalem, Royal Solomon Mother Lodge #293, through the Grand Lodge of Canada, was assisted by Zionist leader and co-founder of the Alliance Israelite Uniiverselle, Charles Netter. The AIU safe guards the lives of Jewish people around the world. The first meeting of Lodge #293, was held May 7, 1873, in King Solomon’s quarries, underneath old Jerusalem. It was the first Masonic Lodge in the Holy Land. The ‘Morgan Affair’, which politically split our country, closed many Masonic lodges, causing great concern among the Grand Lodges through- out the country. The lodges that survived, had fewer and fewer members who knew the ‘work’, and lodge ritual suffered. Throughout the Grand Lodges, Morris wanted to re-establish the Thomas Smith Webb ritual work of 1795, which was an American edited version of the William Pres- ton’s lectures. He created the ‘Conservators’, a group to see the Webb ritual would be used correctly, throughout the Grand Lodges of America. He secretly requested the support of Masonic leaders in every state, and set-up an intricately coded ritual. Morris dedicated himself to seeing it succeed, by his own lecturing, in his publications, and his promotion of masonic ‘schools’. Morris set himself up as the Chief Conservator, who would rule over the coded ritual. However, Masons in other states were not ready to be told that their ritual was wrong, and should obey the Conservator movement. Morris had promised to shut down the operation of the Conservators, if not accepted within a set time limit, and true to his word, he did. Morris was well-loved by his fellow Kentuckians, but the failure of the Conserva- tor movement influenced Kentucky Masons against a standard; one size fits all, ritual, and Kentuckians currently use several rituals, legal or not. Rob Morris was a teacher for about 10 years before becoming a Mason. In 1845 he became President at the Mt. Sylvan Academy and a Mason in 1846 near Oxford, Mississippi. Although the poor wages led him to change careers, his teaching experience would serve him well in his move to Kentucky. The Grand Lodge of Kentucky had assumed the Funk Seminary in La Grange in 1844. By 1850, the re-named Masonic University of Kentucky and was on par with Kentucky’s Centre College and Transylvania University. The Morris family moved to La Grange in 1860, and at the University, Morris taught history and was granted a doctor of law degree, and then assumed the leadership of the University. At the outbreak of the Civil War, membership naturally began to drop and the failure of the school was becoming evident. The University was sold in 1873 for dollars to be used to support the Widow’s and Orphan’s Home. The Order of the Eastern Star is Rob Morris’s greatest success. At the time when women rights were becoming a political issue, Rob Morris was writing the ritual for the Eastern Star. Other adoptive masonry had existed, but Morris had found them dull and lacking substance. He wanted something better. Room does not allow to tell the Eastern Star story, but the facts are that membership in the Order is worldwide, with an ap- proximate membership of 425,000 in over 4000 Chapters with charity in the $15 million dollar range supporting cancer, heart disease, educational scholarships, Religious leadership training, service dogs, and youth development; as well as preservation of four historical sites, including the Rob Morris Home in La Grange, Kentucky. An Eastern Star Home for seniors is located in Louisville. Rob Morris received harsh and sometimes ‘nasty’ criticism for the founding of ‘Ladies Masonry’, and also for the ‘Conservator’ movement. Many nationally known Masons publically criticized his work. But Morris saw the need for raising the level of the ritual and the need to give women a voice. He loved his Masonry! He loved his Eastern Star! After his death, money had to be raised to pay his debts. He had given his all! ------What do you think? For a very personal look at Rob Morris, Nancy Stearns Theis PhD (Oldham Co. Historical Society) has produced a book from over 200 letters written between Morris and his family. “A Place in the Lodge” is available at the Masonic Library, along with several books written by M.W. Rob Morris; including his book of Poems, issues of The Voice, and the American Freemason.
