Originally opened in 1921, the Arcadia Theater was host to many famous vaudeville acts as well as musical, theatrical, and cinema productions until its closing in 1975. The Arcadia Theater was historically renovated to its once grandeur splendor; and on October 25th, 1998 the Arcadia Theater re-opened its magnificent doors to the music of the “Best of Broadway.” Over the past 12 years, the Arcadia Theater has become recognized throughout the region as an intimate performing arts venue hosting diverse, nationally, and internationally acclaimed entertainers and performances for audiences of all ages. The Arcadia Theater is proud to host the Coal – ala – Bear Children’s Series, annual Missoula Children’s Theatre Workshop, as well as our Arcadian Players Youth Theater Camp. The Windber Coal Heritage Center, an interactive coal museum located across the street from the Arcadia Theater, was founded in 1997 to showcase Western Pennsylvania’s Coal Mining Heritage through interactive exhibits, media presentations, guided tours focusing on life in a coal town, the evolution of the mining technology, the struggle for unionization and the impact of the mining industry in PA from America’s Industrial Revolution to present day. It is the only interactive mining museum in the Eastern part of the United States specializing in the interpretation of the everyday life of the coal miner and his family. The WCHC has recently received state and national recognition for its role in collecting and preserving Quecreek mining artifacts, supporting efforts to free the nine trapped Quecreek miners, and providing the missing updated map of the breached mine to the Quecreek rescuers and investigators.
