Dr. Jerry Pournelle (1933-2017) led an adventurous life and wrote an immense quantity of science fact and fiction for over 50 years --including the NY Times bestsellers Lucifer’s Hammer, Oath of Fealty and Footfall (with Larry Niven). Gizmodo described Jerry as "a tireless ambassador for the future". His predictions and persuasive essays may have changed the course of American history but his view on life and growing up influenced thousands of lives. It's not just bookworm material: Jerry's stories are fast-paced and rollicking, often with a deeper level for the careful reader. He worked well with Larry Niven and Steve Barnes as a co-author combining mystery, science, well-paced drama and outlandish predictions of the future. Within Jerry’s stories his themes ranged from politics to military Science Fiction, artificial intelligence to individual acts of courage that save the world. In 1980, Jerry predicted that by the year 2000 anyone in Western Civilization would be able to get the answer to any question that can be answered; that happened a bit faster than anyone thought it would. His Co-Dominium universe (The Mote in Gods Eye, Gripping Hand) predicted the fall of the USSR as well as the invention of the iPad.

Science Fiction Book Club Larry Niven Q and A March 2018 We are beyond honored to have the opportunity to speak with legendary science fiction author Larry Niven. He is the recipient of five Hugos, one Nebula, four Locus awards, and the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award. He has written and co-written such works as Ringworld, Mote in God’s Eye, Lucifer’s Hammer, Footfall, and so many more! Erik Wilkenfeldt: I really enjoyed Destiny's Road. There was an easy going feel to the story and to the main protagonist, as he went through his trials. Was there a period of time in your life that influenced this story.....such as a long extended period of travel? I ask as this story reminds me of some of the travels I have taken, or have not and wish I had. Larry Niven: There may have been travel. The book was delivered four years late. I flinched from writing a life story. Not my style. Andrew ten Broek: Amazon announced a little while back that it would develop Ringworld into a TV show. What role will you be having on this project? (If any). Larry Niven: None so far. They don’t keep me in the loop. Kevin Kuhn: Mr. Niven - big fan! I'm excited about the upcoming adaptation of Ringword on Amazon. However, does this preclude the possibility of a full feature Ringworld film in the near future? Larry Niven: Not my decision. "Hard" Sf, with Its Emphasis on Science and Technology, Has Become Dated During
CHAPTER 5 "Hard" sf, with its emphasis on science and technology, has become dated during the last twenty-five years (Arbur, 1979), although Larry Niven, with his winning mix of wholly believable aliens and technology which operates logically and credibly within the laws of physics applying to Nivens space (Nedelkovich, 1980), has used this medium with resounding success during the last two decades. Nivens wildly exploring imagination has created the fantasies of alien engineering encountered in Ringworld (1972) and the amazing Piersons puppeteers introduced in his book of short stories Neutron Star (1968). In such short stories as "The Lion in His Attic" and "Talisman" (Limits, 1985), Niven has also used the more ancient "natural" magic of the universe to achieve his settings, a "maybe" time on Earth when old magic was dying out. But he also delights in making the present a more tenuous place in which to find oneself living; Lucifers Hammer (1977), written with Jerry Pournelle, impacts heavily on the reader because of its present day setting and its concentration on the view of world affairs created by the media. Some of its scenes would translate directly to a film set as they graphically describe the desperate need of journalists to obtain maximum media coverage of the end of the world, giving this book an immediacy with which all viewers of prime-time television news programs can readily identify. Throughout Nivens work there is a theme of optimism and a breath of humour can often be found pervading even the darkest moments. Whereas Ron Hubbard, for instance, threatens alien invasion from space monsters, recalling xenophobic attitudes from the 1950s "flying saucer" era, Larry Niven provides characters who are xenophiles such as Louis Wu in Ringworld, and scenes where the maximum entertainment is obtained from the wide variety of aliens present.

(See previous issues for parts I and II) Conversely humans may impose infertility through contraception on alien species, and in The Gripping Hand (1993),1 which is set in the Motie universe, humanity deliberately develops an intestinal fluke that permanently turns Moties into males, allowing Moties to control their population, as in their natural state, Moties are sequential hermaphrodites, changing from male to female, and must become regularly pregnant or die, and hence would overrun the cosmos if allowed out of their solar system. Humanity also similarly threatens the sentient and elephant-like ‘Ganae’ in Van Vogt’s Resurrection (1948) with enforced infertility if the Ganae do not themselves limit their fertility.2 Interestingly, sex on Gene Brewer’s planet in K-Pax (1995) is portrayed as painful, odorous and nauseating, and the sexual act is therefore solely procreative and not pleasurable.3 Naturally, overpopulation is not an issue on K-Pax. Infertility has also been associated with ageing species, as a species’ age is allegorically related to senescence, with all of the vicissitudes associated with extreme maturity, including infertility. Authors who portray such scenarios deliberately forget that such advanced races would be in possession of sophisticated reproductive aids and would surely be able to overcome such obstacles.
