The book highlights the achievements of the navigators Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin, on their voyages of discovery to Australia at the dawn of the nineteenth century. Unusually, the book takes its lead from the voyage of Baudin, rather than that of Flinders, providing a rather different interpretation from those presently circulating. Furthermore the authors have worked from their own fresh translation of Baudin's journals, sourcing original accounts including material based on recent historical research. (Melbourne); The Miegunyah Press; (1997). Phillip Parker King stands with Cook and Flinders in the history of the exploration and charting of Australia's coastline. Phillip Paker was the son of Philip Gidley King, the third governor of New South Wales, and godson of Arthur Phillip, the first governor. Unlike Cook and Flinders, who were Englishmen exploring a remote shore, King was Australian- born. Indeed he was the first native born Australian to achieve flag rank in the Royal Navy. During his life as the author puts it King was "naval officer, explorer, hydrographer, administrator, astronomer, geologist, artist, writer and pastoralist'. This book focuses upon his work as explorer and hydrographer.... Click here to Order AUD$150

The Nelson's Sixty-Fours. An intriguing tale. How a Bendigo archaeological dig recovered an important part of early Victoria's naval heritage. First Edition; Med. 4to; pp. [ii], iii, 73; illustrated with over 100 coloured and b/w photographs, selected bibliography, index, original still illustrated wrapper, fine copy. Drysdale; Historical Solutions; 2011.

The story chronicles the journey of two of the 64 pounders from their origins in the industrial heartland of Bradford in northern England and their long voyage to Australia on board the Nelson. The ship played an important role in defending Victoria for over two decades before she was decommissioned and her guns placed in storage. With Federation approaching and the outbreak of the Boer war, it was decided to donate the guns to towns around regional Victoria to aid recruitment and to promote patriotism. Two of the 64's were given to Bendigo and after being on display for many years they disappeared. Years later, a chance discovery during an archaeological dig brings new life and their relocation to Fort Queenscliff - the heart of Victorian colonial defence. Click here to Order AUD$50

Potts Point, NSW; Hordern House; 2014. "A lively account of sailing with Matthew Flinders, written by a young surgeon in the Royal Navy who survived the wreck of HMS Porpoise off the

Queensland coast in 1803.This hitherto almost unknown account is now shown to have been written by Surgeon's Mate Robert Purdie, a junior officer on board HMS Investigator. Purdie's lengthy "Narrative" is the earliest published account of any Investigator veteran and the only account of life on Wreck Reef in the Coral Sea after the foundering of the Porpoise and Cato, and of the survivors who made their own way back to England. First published as an anonymous serial in the famous journal The Naval Chronicle in late 1806 and early 1807, the only other major published eyewitness account of the wreck was by Matthew Flinders himself, in his Voyage to Terra Australis (1814)."
