Church hosting free concert today Celebrated organist Cody Willmot Mead will perform a classical music concert at 4 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, 973 S. Marion Ave., Lake City. Mead is the director of music at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport, Rhode Island. He will perform works of Bach, Mendelssohn, Rheinberger and others on the pipe organ. The concert is free and open to the public. Mead began his professional career as a church musician at age 16. His primary teachers in organ have been Mark Laubach and William Porter, hav- ing also pursued conducting and vocal studies with William Decker, and vocal studies with Mary Decker and Georgette Mead Hutchins, among others. Since arriving to Rhode Island, he has developed a robust and growing music program at St. Mary’s Church. In 2015, he started St. Mary’s Summer Concerts — a series of free, weekly concerts during the summer months — and founded St. Mary’s Youth Choir. In recent years, he has taken his choirs on singing trips to Boston, Cambridge and Chicago. In addition to his duties at St. Mary’s, Mead serves as music director of the Newport Children’s Theatre. OUR OPINION A debate not worth having f all the things city officials could focus on in relation to Lake City OGateway Airport, they pick trees. For some reason, the city is suddenly dead set on harvesting 133 acres of pines that mostly adjoin Florida Gateway College. It’s not as if there aren’t more pressing issues. The airport is the crown jewel of Columbia County and the key to economic develop- ment here. With state of the art utilities, major highway frontage, a planned rail spur and an 8,000-foot runway, LCGA ought to be every city official’s focus in the quest to bring career-track jobs to local residents. Dunn on Trump: ‘Best yet to come’

From staff reports

U.S. Rep. Neal Dunn, who represents most of Columbia County in Congress, called this year’s State of the Union address by President Donald Trump a sign of good things to come. “President Trump laid out an ambitious plan for the country — one that focuses on making a better future for all Americans,” Dunn said in a prepared statement. “A future that is safer, more prosperous, and offers more opportunities for everyone. “We had a productive year. We cut taxes for Americans at every income level and we provided a much-needed boost to businesses of all sizes. We opened a pathway of repatriation of trillions of dol- lars trapped overseas, and established the lowest tax rate for small businesses since 1931. We grew our economy by slashing Dunn government regulations and red tape. We are getting the government off your back. We repealed the Obamacare penalty tax. The tax cuts are here now and hardworking Americans are already reaping the benefits. “We are finally rebuilding our military and we voted to give our troops a much needed and much deserved pay raise,” Dunn continued. “And we are attacking the layers of bureaucracy to fix health care for our veterans. “I will continue to work with President Trump on our agenda and I commend him for his commitment to our great nation. The best is yet to come.”

By NORMAN WINTER Tribune News Service

Though we are still in the grips of a cold winter, I assure you spring is headed our way like a runaway locomotive. Those plans that we thought we would make for improving the landscape somehow got put on the back burner. The Encore series, the best azaleas to ever hit the market, now has 31 varieties. With two new riveting red selections, "Autumn Bonfire" and "Autumn Fire," you'll have even more choices allowing you to have an encore of spring bloom in the landscape for the long growing season ahead. That is why they're called the Encore Azaleas. There is no more sadness when spring bloom is over because you can rest assured more flowers are on the way. The name Autumn Bonfire itself conjures up visions of warmth and fiery flames of color in the garden. Autumn Bonfire is dwarf or compact, perfect for today's garden. It reaches 3 feet tall with a spread of 3 feet. The blossoms are semi-double and a true saturated red. Autumn Bonfire not only gives you stimulating color in the garden, but it is also evergreen retaining the bright green foliage. In other words, it will be an excellent choice giving you the needed bones and structure in the landscape even when not in bloom. Red is a rousing color that makes NORMAN WINTER/Tribune News Service you take notice.
