I am a huge, huge, huge fan of the BBC television series Death in Paradise, as it features locked room mysteries in a tropical setting wherein the detective investigates a list of suspects before bringing them all together at the end for the classic denouement where the killer is revealed. If Hercule Poirot were to make an appearance, I wouldnt be at all surprised.Though I continue to watch and enjoy the show with its current cast, including its primary sleuth, the bumbling and good-natured Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall), I still miss the original cast, most especially the persnickety, pessimistic Detective Inspector Richard Poole (played by Ben Miller) and his number two, Detective Sergeant Camille Bordey (played by Sara Martins). With this novel written by the shows creator, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the original cast from the first two series is back in full force, including Richard, Camille, Sergeant Fidel Best, Officer Dwayne Myers, Camilles very French mother Catherine and Police Commissioner Selwyn Patterson. Once again, were treated to an impossible murder with unlikely suspects. -

Mohamud Hasan Reading Death in Paradise: Revisiting Polysemy in Televisual Pleasure Master’s thesis Faculty of Education, Media Education University of Lapland Spring 2017 University of Lapland, Faculty of Education The title of the pro gradu thesis: Reading Death in Paradise: Revising Polysemy in Pleasure Author: Mohamud Hasan Degree programme / subject: Media education The type of the work: Pro graduthesis_X_Laudatur thesis__Licenciate thesis__ Number of pages: 91+ 6 Appendices Year: 2017 Summary: This study examines an episode of Death in Paradise, a BBC television crime drama series in an attempt to find out how televisual pleasure and gender and racial representations are constructed in Death in Paradise. This study pays a particular attention to the textual features of the programme and employs narrative analysis to account for format, generic convention, style and storytelling in one episode which acts as prototype for discussion of the whole programme. Scene description analysis was put to good effect in the breaking down of the text scene-by-scene. The analysis showed the text as resisting to be confined within a set of defined guidelines as pertains to generic expectations. Ideologically, the episode proves to be both conformist and contradictory, while genre-wise it both promiscuous and familiar. The programme is also largely progressive in representation of women and Black people. As to what constitute the source of pleasure, the episode mirrors the whole programme and is a classic polysemic text which is open to multiple -

Context - British TV channels and governance 3. Gender ethnicity and diversity in Britain 4. TV Series post 2010 5. Significant programmes in November 2017 6. Conclusion 1. Background This chapter examines the background to the study of law and justice on British television. It notes how the reach of television has continued in the second decade of the 21st century. Two major trends can be identified – sources and modes of consumption. On the one hand there has been an expansion of the sources of programming. This has involved an explosion of niche channels free to view through either Freesat or Freeview. The number of channels free to view has proliferated into the hundreds. This has largely involved the emergence of specialist channels showing a highly restricted service such as, for instance, Talking Pictures. Talking Pictures offers a diet of mainly black and white British films from the 1950s and 1960s with no other material – no news, documentaries or other entertainment/educational material. Complementing these niche free channels has been the emergence of low cost subscription services such as Netflix or Amazon which offer films and TV series “on demand” rather than any kind of news or current affairs. -
