I relate various tribal reactions to the tragedy of cultural genocide as experienced by those indigenous groups within the "Black Hole" of Southwest Oregon. My desire is to provide an "inside" (ernie) perspective on the history and cultural changes of Southwest Oregon. I explain Native responses to living primarily in a non-Indian world, after the nearly total loss of aboriginal Coquelle culture and tribal identity through v decimation by disease, warfare, extermination, and cultural genocide through the educational policies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. -

They will feel at home in the downtown area that is well known for its coffee shops, microbreweries, food options, and cultural events. After a day of discovering metro Portland, adventure seekers can explore the adjacent terrain by driving to three of the Seven Wonders of Oregon—the Historic Columbia River Highway Scenic Byway, the Mt. Hood Scenic Loop, and the northern section of Oregon’s Coast. DAY 1—METRO PORTLAND Washington Park Attractions Portland is a city that can be discovered by foot. Don’t forget to include the Washington Park area on your route. Be aware that it’s a steep uphill walk from most hotels. Families can start at the southwest corner with the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Children’s Museum, and the World Forestry Center. Nature lovers, on the other hand, can go to the eastern section for the spectacular Portland Japanese Garden and the aromatic Rose Garden. Keep in mind that the time of year may affect your viewing. A few historical elements are scattered throughout the grounds. Look for the Holocaust Memorial, the Sacajawea Statue, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the lesser-known Coming of the White Man. -

Colonizing Minds: Public Education, the "Textbook Indian," and Settler Colonialism in British Columbia, 1920-1970 Sean Carleton* n the evening of 1 July 1967, more than thirty-two thousand people packed Vancouver’s Empire Stadium to celebrate one hundred years of Canadian Confederation. The audience was Otreated to a dynamic program, including a parade and history pageant, a giant birthday cake complete with candles, and a fireworks display to cap off the evening. The capacity crowd even sang, according to one newspaper, ‘“Happy Birthday, Dear Canada,’ like they meant it – from 1 the bottom of their hearts.” It was not all pomp and ceremony, however. As part of the centennial festivities, actor and outspoken indigenous activist Chief Dan George, and members of his family from the Tsleil- Waututh First Nation located across Burrard Inlet in North Vancouver, performed a powerful soliloquy entitled “Lament for Confederation.” In the performance, George spoke personally of the traumatic and en- during legacy of settler colonialism. He began: “How long have I known you, Oh Canada? A hundred years? Yes, a hundred years … And today, when you celebrate your hundred years, Oh Canada, I am sad for all the Indian people throughout the land.” He explained: “In the long hundred years since the white man came, I have seen my freedom disappear like the salmon going mysteriously out to sea. The white man’s strange customs which I could not understand pressed down upon me until I could no longer breathe. When I fought to protect my land and my home, I was called a savage. -

EXPOSE YOURSELF TO ART Towards a Critical Epistemology of Embarrassment Gwyneth Siobhan Jones Goldsmiths University of London PhD Thesis 2013 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Gwyneth Siobhan Jones 2 ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the negative affect of ‘spectatorial embarrassment’, a feeling of exposure and discomfort sometimes experienced when looking at art. Two particular characteristics of embarrassment figure in the methodology and the outcome of this enquiry; firstly that embarrassment is marginal, of little orthodox value, and secondly, it is a personal experience of aversive self-consciousness. The experiential nature of embarrassment has been adopted throughout as a methodology and the embarrassments analysed are, for the most part, my own and based on ‘true’ experience. Precedent for this is drawn from ‘anecdotal theory’, which uses event and occasion in the origination of a counter-theory that values minor narratives of personal experience in place of the generalising and abstract tendencies of theory-proper. The context is a series of encounters with artworks by Gilbert & George, Jemima Stehli, Franko B, Adrian Howells, and Sarah Lucas. They are connected by their contemporaneity, their ‘British-ness’, and that they allow the spectator no comfortable position to look from. This enquiry engages with theories of ‘the gaze’ (as both aesthetic disinterest and a dubious sign of cultural competence) and the challenge to aesthetic disinterest made by ‘transgressive art’ which may provoke a more engaged, even embodied response. Each encounter sparks consideration of differing causes and outcomes of embarrassment that resonate beyond art to broader sociocultural territories particularly in terms of gender and class. -

REVIEW^S OF BOOKS The Coming of the White Man, 1492-1848 (A History of Ameri can Life, vol. i). By HERBERT I. PRIESTLEY. (New York, The Macmillan Company, 1929. xx, 411 p. Illustrations, map. $4.00.) The non-English colonies in North America are the subject of this book. Although preceded in publication by four other volumes of this series, which have already been reviewed in MINNESOTA HISTORY (December, 1928), this volume is designed to introduce the series. The editors in their foreword call attention to the fact that the history of the United States can be understood only as a part of the history of the New World as a whole, and they indicate that the objectives of this volume are to provide a setting and furnish standards of comparison as well as to portray the Spanish, French, and Dutch roles in the history of the United States. The book, and especially the first half of it, which is devoted to New Spain, will help to correct the current notion that the only important developments in America before the Revo lution took place in the thirteen English colonies along the Atlantic seaboard. The average reader will be surprised to learn that in most cultural matters the ancestors of our neighbors to the south were more advanced than our own ancestors in the English colonies. In writing the social history of New Spain for American readers the author wisely includes, in outline at least, a narrative of events, and this serves to give movement and coherence to the work. -
