Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

A barbecue lunch with various salads and desserts was a highlight for council members, which was followed by a presen- tation on the camp and its many recent upgrades. But before that, there was business to attend to, which included several key decisions on new issues. Predictive Modeling in Data-Driven Drug Discovery
R&D Solutions DRUG DISCOVERY & DEVELOPMENT From Molecule to Phenotype: Predictive Modeling in Data-Driven Drug Discovery Summary Despite growing scientific insight and technological investment, attempts to develop novel therapies still show limited success. Traditional drug screening approaches oversimplify the complexity of living cells by focusing on a 1-to-1 substance–target relationship. Modern data- driven drug design utilizes all available layers of information to create predictive models that select compounds likely to have the desired effect on the phenotype. High-quality, carefully curated data are essential for this approach. Despite growing technological investment, the number of new drugs approved each year has not changed much since the 1980s The last 30 years have brought enormous progress in biological science. From recombinant protein technologies through completion of the human genome to the discovery of epigenetics, our knowledge has expanded in an unprecedented manner. However, insights in basic research have failed to spur an increase in novel therapies. Despite growing technological investment, the number of new drugs approved each year has not changed much since the 1980s (Figure 1). This effect applies to all therapy approaches. First-in-class drugs, which use a novel mechanism of action for therapy, often suffer from side effects. Follower drugs, which build on a therapy that is already established in the clinic, often do not provide therapeutic improvement. Many drugs look promising in biochemical assays, but fail in the clinical phase because of low efficacy or unexpected side effects. Existing knowledge on biological processes is not yet fully implemented in drug design, ignoring the gap between individual molecular interactions and the complexity of whole organisms. -

Congress evidently had de Machaut's handiwork in mind recently when addressing the copyright status of sound recordings. In particular, Congress amended the Copyright Act in 1999 to correct a "technicality" regarding whether sound recordings can qualify as spe- cially commissioned works-for-hire. Accordingly, the time is ripe to consider whether sound recordings can, indeed, qualify as spe- cially commissioned works made for hire. After analyzing the issue in depth, the conclusion reached below is a resounding maybe.2 The inquiry might be of scant interest, were it not at the vortex of an impending storm. When Congress passed the current Act in 1976, it cre- ated a mechanism called termination of transfers to safeguard the interests of authors. Of particular practical significance, Congress made this termi- nation right inalienable. It is said that the human ear reacts to certain sounds more than others. This is sound branding. Sound, most notably music, triggers emotions, auditory pleasures, memories and associations. Sound branding is a multi-sensory form of communication and a holistic corporate model, which drives perception. It also creates attention with familiar associations. It also differentiates from the dross of typical advertising media. The benefit of this auditory effect is that it enhances brand identity, loyalty, and thus increases sales. Take the memorable Intel or Coca-Cola jingles as key examples. Harley Davidson‘s distinctive and trademarked motorcycle exhaust sound, and Kellogg‘s investment in the power of auditory stimulus with its cereal crunching demonstrates strategic marketing through sound branding. Firms of this sort understand sound branding delivers personality. The advent of digital media and devices increases the communication of the sound branding experience. Sampling of sound branding through audio identity should be appreciated by listening to the following examples:can be viewed and heard here. • Bentley Motor Cars developed ―The new sound of Bentley‖ — a stirring and thunderous soundtrack and the prelude to a potent new Bentley driving experience. • Hip boutique hotels such as Puro Hotel in Mallorca, whose beach bar has been voted one of the world‘s 50 best by CNN Travel, surrounds you everywhere with lounge/chill-out genre of music compiled by its in-house DJ ‒ whether you open their website, choose to listen to their on-line steaming player, purchase a CD, relax by the pool sipping a passion fruit mojito or come nightfall, gather around to dance to their house tunes. -
