Park Research:

Hong Kong

Hong Kong Disneyland, a Disney theme park, opened in September 12, 2005 and is currently owned and managed by the Hong Kong International Theme Parks. The park currently has six themed areas: Main Street, U.S.A., , , , Grizzly Gulch and Land. Another themed area called will open on May 17, 2013. This Disneyland attracts companies to host events at the resort because of its 5-star accommodations and elegant setting. They are also the first Disney theme park to celebrate Halloween with scary attractions to attract more visitors. Throughout its years of operation, they continue to celebrate other holidays, such as Christmas and Chinese New Year. Since this is still a fairly new amusement park, there are not many notable historical events.

Hong Kong Disneyland has three steel rollercoasters and zero wooden ones. The highest steel coaster in the park is 100 feet, which fits in with the rest of the Disney rides. Since Disney does not usually make any wooden coasters, we decided to make a steel coaster manufactured by Vekoma. In addition, our roller coaster will have no inversions to fit with the rest of Disney rides.

Coaster Research:

Major elements of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster include its two inversions, roll over and corkscrew, since no other Disney coasters have inversions. As the riders enter the roll over, they ultimately feel 4.5g. The inversions fit the theming of the ride because they are supposed to represent the Los Angeles Area Freeways. In addition, each seat has five speakers that play Aerosmith songs to give riders a real rock ‘n’ roll feel. The coaster also launches off from 0 to 57 mph in 2.8 seconds. Bad parts of the ride are that the speakers could get too loud to the point it’s uncomfortable for riders, the ride is too short, and each train has a set track that plays over again. Depending on the train the riders get on, if people ride multiple times they might hear the same song. Since the ride is inside a tunnel, the videos does not show the sequencing very well. We think that this coaster could be a BB type sequencing because of its two inversions. The aspect from the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster that we want to use is the darkness of the ride. We want a part of the ride to take place in darkness to give riders the feel of unknown. If the riders can’t see the tracks ahead of them, the ride would be more exciting and thrilling.

The overall design of Expedition Everest tells a story. The riders board trains that are modeled like the village Serka Zong. First the tracks take the riders up a lift hill and down a small drop where the train circles the base of the mountain before entering. While in the mountain, various signs appear to warn the riders of the yeti. Suddenly, the train approaches a section of broken tracks. Then the train rolls backwards through helixes and caves before going back to the station. One good part about this ride is the theming, which tells the riders the story of the yeti. Going backwards is also a good element because not many riders would expect that. The part that riders did not enjoy was the yeti that riders encounter in the middle. There were times when the yeti was not working or not scary enough. The sequencing of the ride can be classified under dramatic sequencing because of its theming. In our roller coaster, we want to use the idea of going inside a mountain. Since our ride is based of ants, we will be using an anthill instead of a mountain.

The ride takes place inside a dome themed with bright lights, stars, and meteors, and comets. One main element of the ride is after the lift hill where the trains enter a tunnel with sounds that gives the room energy and is then propelled to the opposite side of the dome. Then the riders turn to climb another lift hill, but mirrors are positioned at the end of the turn, so riders think that they are about to collide with another train. Similar to the other Disney rides, Space Mountain has great theming and it is thrilling to adults. Also, while people are waiting line, there are many effects that people can look at. The bad part of the ride is its capacity. There are two cars per train for a total of six riders per train. Since the capacity is small, the queue might be long. The sequencing of Space Mountain would fall under dramatic sequencing. Once again, we want to add the simplicity and theming of Space Mountain in our ride. We want to model our ride after the existing Disney rides, so we are keeping our roller coaster to just a lift hill, small hills, turns, and lights. We definitely want to use bright lights in some sections of our ride when it goes into the anthill.

Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars has a similar layout to Expedition Everest. This ride also comprises of direction switch where the train appears to going up a hill, but just goes backwards at a fast pace suddenly. The ride starts off with the train going into tunnel eight and then a grizzly bear attacks the riders, sending the riders into tunnel four. The numbers eight and four signifies good luck and death, respectively. Many riders liked the direction change, which gives a thrilling surprise. Surprisingly not a lot of people were impressed with the theming compared to the ones in America. Some people said that the mines looked too new to fit into the story as an abandoned mine and the bear was not scary enough. Again, this ride is considered to be dramatic theming. Our ride will be a similar type to Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. We thought that this was a good Disney ride to model after, so ours would have a 100 feet drop and no inversions. Similarly, our ride will consist of small hills.

Silver Bullet Park Year Type Manufacturer Height Length Speed Inversions opened Knott’s 2004 Steel B&M 146 ft 3,125 ft 55 6 total Berry (Inverted) mph inversions Farm Names: -105 ft tall loop -Cobra-Roll -Zero-G Roll -Corkscrew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZJUwQgKG0o

A main element of the ride is the 109 foot drop into a 105 feet loop turn. The ride does a total of six inversions and ends with a helix finale. Aside from the six inversions, other good parts about the ride are that the tracks are filled with sand to minimize the sound made from the train, and the intense positive G-forces. On the other hand, one criticism for the coaster is its lack of airtime. The sequencing of this coaster would be maximalist sequencing since it has the biggest element, the 109 foot drop, first. The element that we incorporated into our design is Silver Bullet’s helix finale.
