Domenici Science Operations Center, 1003 Lopezville Road, Socorro, New Mexico 87801, USA The close binary Algol contains a radio-bright K subgiant star in a very close (0.062 AU), rapid (2.86 day) orbit with a main sequence B8 star. Since the rotation periods of the two stars are tidally locked to the orbital period, the consequent rapid rotation drives a robust magnetic dynamo. A large body of evidence points to the existence of an extended, complex coronal magnetosphere originating at the cooler K subgiant1–4. The detailed morphology of the subgiant’s corona and its possible interaction with its companion are unknown, though theory predicts that the coronal plasma should be confined in magnetic loop structure5, as seen on the Sun. Here we report multi-epoch radio imaging of the Algol system, in which we see a large, persistent coronal loop approximately one subgiant diameter in height, whose base is straddling the subgiant and whose apex is oriented toward the B star. This strongly suggests that a persistent asymmetric magnetic field structure is aligned between the two stars. The loop is larger than anticipated theoretically6, 7, but the size may be a result of a magnetic interaction between the two stars. 1 We made six twelve-hour observations of Algol during a period from 6 April to 17 August 2008 with the High Sensitivity Array (HSA), a global very long baseline interferometer array. -

These guides suggest possible ways of presenting the aerospace material and are for the leader’s use. Whether you are a classroom teacher or an Aerospace Education Officer leading the CAP squadron, how you use these guides is up to you. You may know of different and better methods for presenting the Aerospace Dimensions’ lessons, so please don’t hesitate to teach the lesson in a manner that works best for you. However, please consider covering the lesson outcomes since they represent important knowledge we would like the students and cadets to possess after they have finished the lesson. Aerospace Dimensions encourages hands-on participation, and we have included several hands-on activities with each of the modules. We hope you will consider allowing your students or cadets to participate in some of these educational activities. These activities will reinforce your lessons and help you accomplish your lesson out- comes. Additionally, the activities are fun and will encourage teamwork and participation among the students and cadets. Many of the hands-on activities are inexpensive to use and the materials are easy to acquire. The length of time needed to perform the activities varies from 15 minutes to 60 minutes or more. Depending on how much time you have for an activity, you should be able to find an activity that fits your schedule. -

This program is designed to provide the observer with a well-rounded introduction to the night sky visible from North America. Using this observing program is an excellent way to gain knowledge and experience in astronomy. Experienced observers find that a planned observing session results in a more satisfying and interesting experience. This program will help introduce you to amateur astronomy and prepare you for other more challenging certificate programs such as the Messier and Finest NGC. The program covers the full range of astronomical objects. In previous issues the times of sunrise and sunset have been given for a small number of selected places in the standard time of each place. On account of the arbitrary correction which must be made to the mean time of any place in order to get its standard time, the tables given for a particualar place are of little use any where else, In order to remedy this the times of sunrise and sunset have been calculated for places on five different latitudes covering the populous part of Canada, (pages 10 to 21), while the way to use these tables at a large number of towns and cities is explained on pages 8 and 9. The other chief change is in the addition of fuller star maps near the end. These are on a large enough scale to locate a star or planet or comet when its right ascension and declination are given. -

The two worlds are so far apart, and yet, can one exist without the other? Although many broad topics in science and art seem to be interrelated, research and history proves that the two go hand-in-hand on a more specific basis. The genius of artists such as Brunelleschi and DaVinci can be compared to scientists like Galileo and Einstein. All four men seemed to be ahead of the curve in thought and creativity. Filippo Brunelleschi “used systems of proportion that were based on the sixteenth century writings of mathematician Pythagoras” (Hartt 167). In the same manner, the scientist Galileo unlocked many of the secrets of astronomy and natural motion. While Leonardo DaVinci painted the famed Mona Lisa, he also made discoveries in meteorology, learned the effect of the moon on the tides, and foreshadowed modern conceptions of continent formation. Although these comparisons are quite vague, there are more meticulous comparisons of art and science. Meteorology and astronomy play an epic role in the natural works of artist Charles E. Burchfield and the effects of the climate on artist Aert van der Neer during the Maunder Minimum. Many artists have used the night sky and its stars to enhance the feeling of their compositions. Van Gogh used radiant swirls to portray the light and feeling the stars conveyed in his Starry Night. Nonetheless, being that these celestial objects are so tiny and seemingly insignificant to the finished piece, most artists do not choose to emulate in depth the actual stars and their real location in the sky. -

At any rate, we figured now would be as good a time as any to get the gang back together for a good old fashioned potluck style barbecue: to that end, we’ve moved the July meeting to the Sunday, 11 July at 4PM at HRPO. -
