BID BOLDY, PLAY SAFE

Fernando Tepedino

Against 6ª South led the ten of trumps. Obviously there was a lot of work to do for declarer who was faced with potential losers in clubs and spades.

Tepedino won the Jack in hand, played ©A and ©K and noted the fall of the ©Q. He ruffed a diamond in his hand; North pitching a club. Declarer draw the rest of the trumps, ending in dummy. He cashed ©J and the 5th diamond, pitching two spades from hand. Tepedino continued with a club to his Ace and a low club. Eventually the 4th club became his 12th tricks.

Alternatively declarer could have made his contract by pitching his two club losers on the diamonds and guessing spades. To rely on the club suit however, bringing in three tricks, clearly is the better play.

This happened at the table I kibitzed. North played 5¨. East led a heart to the King. Next came a . Declarer won the King in dummy, draw in two rounds the outstanding trumps and had to concede two down when diamonds didn't run.

Declarer missed a chance to shine. The textbook play is to draw only two times trumps, leaving one trump honor in dummy, followed by ©K and And what if West had switched to a more natural «K? In Ace.
