CHAPTER 8 Bohemians Greenwich Village and The Masses Joanna Levin Ever since Rodolphe, Henri Murger's prototypical struggling writer, stood before the grave of Mimi, his lost love and partner in the romance of bohemia, crying, "Oh my youth, it is you that is being buried," la vie boheme has represented a fabled transitional period between youth and mature adulthood in many an individual life, memoir, and Bildungsroman (Seigel 45). Similarly, ever since its inception in the wake of the 1830 Rev olution in France, bohemianism - as a larger subcultural movement has flourished during periods of historical transition. It was in the tumultuous lead-up to the Civil War that la vie boheme first took root in the United States (in a basement beer hall beneath the sidewalks of Broadway and Bleecker and on the pages of the New York Saturday Press), but it was dur ing the 1910s, the decade known for ushering in a host of radical and mod ernist movements, that bohemia assumed its most famous American form in New York City's Greenwich Village. -

If any interpretation of Theodore Roethke's poetry is to be meaningful, it must be made in light of his life. The sense of psychological guilt and spiritual alienation that began in childhood after his father's death was intensified in early adulthood by his struggles with periodic insanity. Consequently, by the time he reached middle age, Theodore Roethke was embroiled in an internal conflict that had been developing over a number of years, and the ordering of this inner chaos became the primary goal in his life, a goal which he sought through the introspection within his poetry. The Lost Son and Praise to the End I represent the con- clusion of the initial phases of Theodore RoethkeTs spiritual- journey. In most of the poetry in the former volume, he experjments with a system of imagery and symbols to be used in the Freudian and Jungian exploration of his inner being. In the latter volume he combines previous techniques and themes in an effort to attain a sense of internal peace, a peace attained by experiencing a spiritual illumination through the reliving of childhood memories. However, any illumination that Roethke experiences in the guise of his poetic protagonists is only temporary, 'because he has not yet found a way to resolve his psychological and spiritual conflicts. -

MELOW is an academic organization, one of the foremost of its kind in India. The members are college and university teachers, scholars and critics interested in literature, particularly in World Literatures. a n Rae "Dazzling Hybrids" The Poetry of Anne Carson The subtitle of A n n e Carson's Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse only hints at t h e variety of g e n r e s that the Montreal poet employs. In Autobiography of Red, Carson brings together seven distinct sec- tions—a "proemium" (6) o r preface on t h e Greek poet Stesichoros, trans- lated fragments of S t e s i c h o r o s ' s Geryoneis, three appendices on t h e blinding of Stesichoros by Helen, a l o n g romance-in-verse recasting Stesichoros's Geryoneis as a c o n t e m p o r a r y gay love affair, and a mock-interview with the "choir-master"—each with its o w n style and story to tell. Carson finds fresh combinations for g e n r e s much as s h e presents myth and gender in a new guise. Although men appear to b e t h e subject of both the romance and the academic apparatus that comes with it, C a r s o n sets the stories of Stesichoros, Geryon, and Herakles within a framework of e p i g r a m s and citations from Gertrude Stein and Emily Dickinson that, far from being subordinate, assumes equal importance with the male-centred narrative when Stein supplants Stesichoros in t h e concluding interview. The shift in speakers and time-frames in t h e interview, as well as the allusions to the myth of I s i s , emphasize Carson's manipulation of m y t h i c forms. -

Susan Fisher Japanese Elements in the Poetry of Fred Wah and Roy Kiyooka For nearly a century, Japanese poetic forms have pro- vided inspiration for poets writing in English. The importance of Japanese poetry for Ezra Pound and its role in the formation of Imagism have been well documented (see, for example, Kawano, Kodama, and Miner). Charles Olson, in his manifesto "Projective Verse" (1950), drew examples from Japanese sources as well as Western ones. Several of the Beat Generation poets, such as Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, and Philip Whalen, studied in Japan and their work reflects a serious interest in Japanese poetry. Writing in 1973, p o e t and translator Kenneth Rexroth declared that "classical Japanese and Chinese poetry are today as influential on American poetry as English or French of any period, and close to determinative for those born since 1940" (157). Rexroth may have been overstating this influence; he, after all, had a role in creating it. Nonetheless, what Gary Snyder calls the "myste- riously plain quality" of East Asian verse has served as a model for the simple diction and directness of much contemporary poetry ("Introduction" 4). Writers belonging to these two generations of Asian-influenced American poets—the Imagists and the Beat poets—had no ethnic connection to Asia. But the demographic changes of the last few decades have produced a third generation whose interest in Asian poetry derives at least in part from their own Asian background. Several Asian Canadian poets have written works that are modelled on Japanese genres or make sustained allusions to Japanese literature.
