Summer Entertainment Summer is such a magical season because it’s a little less hectic and we’ve got more daylight hours for play. It can also be very nostalgic, bringing back memories of our childhood, when June, July, and August meant no homework, vacation trips, or splashing in the pool. Some of us might even think back to our teen years when we worked tirelessly at a summer job or maybe even found romance! But, perhaps the most powerful aspects of summer nostalgia are the movies and songs made specifically about the season. Decade after decade, songwriters have turned these summer experiences into chart-topping gold. Take Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out,” for instance. This 1972 hit isn’t just another breezy ballad about fun in the sun. Instead it’s loud and rebellious, full of drums and electric guitars, while Cooper’s screeching voice describes a summer with “no more pencils, no more books.” But, school’s not just out for summer, according to Cooper; it’s “out for-EVER!” In 1983, Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer” gives the season a softer sound. This all-female group sings about a “heavy and dry” summer of “strange voices.” Oddly enough,“Cruel Summer” is very unique in that it combines a fun pop rhythm with lyrics about loneliness. The 80s also had some of the best movies about summer! Take the romantic classic , starring and Jennifer Grey, for instance. Even though the story takes place in the 60s, Dirty Dancing can’t help but include a few 80s pop tunes like Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes” and Merry Clayton’s “Yes.” The movie starts with Francis “Baby” Houseman traveling with her family to a quiet Catskills resort. Her vacation then gets a lot more exciting when Baby learns to dance with some instructors on staff. For thirty years, Dirty Dancing fans have found reasons to quote the movie’s most famous line, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” or spin around to its Oscar-winning song, “(I’ve Had) of My Life.” Summer selections like this don’t need to be saved for a rainy day on the couch though! Summer up your mobile device by streaming Dirty Dancing, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2008), or Justin Timberlake’s “Summer Love” (2007) at the pool or beach, sit back, and enjoy the sunshine. And remember, school won’t really be “out for-EVER,” so while summer lasts, don’t let it be a cruel one! Instead, have the time of your life! Recipe: Gazpacho Plan Your Summer Getaway!
