F ROM THE D ESK OF R ABBI R OSENBAUM

Whenever possible, I’m going to use this space over my final few months at Emanu-El to talk

about the foundations of my Jewish belief and values. This month: Conservative (Part I).

5 Windsor Drive Charleston, SC 29407 I compare to a tree. Its roots are planted firmly in a love of Phone: (843) 571-3264 God and . Its trunk and branches consist of the Oral Law and the wisdom that has Fax: (843) 402-0844 emerged over the centuries from Judaic leaders and scholars, from Temple times to the

Email: present. The leaves — ever-changing, falling, and renewing — represent the new [email protected] customs and laws of modern Judaism which Conservative consider, rebut, and Website: reconsider anew. www.emanu-el.com

Rabbi As Shel Silverstein’s book The Giving Tree implies, a tree offers many gifts to those Adam J. Rosenbaum who come near it. The tree of Conservative Judaism has given me many gifts that have

Religious School Principal made me feel comfortable with my beliefs. Under the tree’s shade, I have found a shelter & Ritual Assistant for my thoughts, which might not be the same as that of other Jews, but are tolerated Daphne Hubara and can feel calm and cool. And I have enjoyed watching the tree’s constant evolution,

staying and looking new while its rings slowly accumulate. This tree represents life itself, President changing with the seasons but remaining sturdy no matter how hard the winds blow. Marsha Gewirtzman

President Elect Craig Browdy Several aspects of this tree make me feel fortunate to receive its gifts. First, I

1st Vice President admire Conservative Judaism for embracing what might seem from the outside to be Al Hawkins ambiguity. Many Jews might only be satisfied if bodies such as the United of

Treasurer Conservative Judaism and the Rabbinical Assembly would embrace only one position on Suzanne Lynch any given issue. The process with which Conservative Jews consider proposed changes

Financial Secretary to Halakhah is democracy at its most honest: while it trusts a well-researched majority Michael Schwartz opinion, it goes to great pains to also recognize the voices of the minority. That Recording Secretary Conservative lawmakers would consider multiple decisions to be valid is a painful Stephen Steinberg necessary admission that Halakah (Jewish law) — much like life itself — is not a black- Corresponding Secretary Ellen Hoffman and-white proposition. That Emet V’Emunah — the movement’s statement of principles

Parliamentarian — is not considered Conservative Judaism’s final word is a blessing to those in future Lydia Mandel generations who will wish to make their own mark on the movement. We cannot expect

Past President uniformity from human beings, for each sees the world through different eyes. It is Paul Lynch therefore necessary to recognize multiple points of view in Judaism, and to aim for

Board of Trustees strength through diversity. Ryan Bluestein Linda Krawcheck While growing up in Denver, I attended numerous youth-group Shabbat Heather Levy gatherings, and at many of them, the discussion groups grappled with the question of Julie Malka Jewish unity. The trouble with these discussion groups was that answers usually involved Karen Pinosky Raina Rubin establishing uniformity in order to achieve unity. I often left these events with a hollow Roxann Spandorfer feeling, fearing that my views were not “good enough” for everyone else. In contrast, Stephen Steinberg while attending USY conventions, I conversed with people who had very different points Gary Weinstein of view from mine, yet we were able to listen to one another and observe Shabbat

Sisterhood President together in peace. That, I think, is the dream of the Conservative movement: to be a “big Gloria Adelson tent” for Jews of all beliefs without compromising the basic principles of Halakhah. This spirit offers a sense of ownership to every and allows their voices to be heard. I Men’s Club President Howard Snow admire Conservative Judaism for its desire to bring people together to make the decisions that will shape the Jewish tomorrow.

(Part II will be published in next month’s Scroll.)

RESIDENT ARSHA EWIRTZMAN P - M G

One of the first Hebrew phrases that we learn in religious school is “Todah Rabah” (thank you very much) “Todah” is top of mind throughout the year but likely more so around Thanksgiving. “Todah” is indeed what I feel as we work together on the 1-Gavriel Pekar challenges and opportunities in front of our synagogue. 1-Elaine Tessler 4-Jerry Scheer Everyone was disappointed that the kitchen had to close, but our safety was paramount. 6-Elliott Levy Brenda Lederman and her Kitchen Renovation Committee have taken on the challenge. 6-Billy Grossman We now have an architect, a plan, and the early blueprint of a fundraising campaign. The 8-Nate LeRoy goal is to start construction after our first quarter B’nai . Stay tuned for 8-Mickey Rosenblum preliminary drawings of our vision for the new kitchen. Please join me in saying “Todah” 8-Rachel Fox to those who are working long and hard. 8-Ijo Toporek 8-Mitchell Sherman Our search for our new rabbi has officially begun. We have posted our position with the 9-David Kalik Rabbinical Assembly. No easy task. The 19-page document included everything from our 10-Anne Barbanel synagogue’s mission, opportunities, and challenges, to why Charleston is a good place to 10-Jeanne Lieberman live. It asked about our educational programs, Jewish community, services, commitment 10-Tamar Sternfeld to tikun olom, and religious school. As you can imagine, many people worked tirelessly to 11-Michael Spandorfer bring our synagogue and community to life in this document. To them and the entire 11-Lauren Ryba Search Committee under the able leadership of Dennis Feinberg, we say “Todah.” 11-Marc Howard 11-Julie Hellman There is much more work ahead of us. I know you share my confidence. Please become 12-Claire Holtsford part of the solution. How can you help? In advance, I say “Todah Rabah.” 12-Suzanne Lynch 12-Arthur Rosenblum 12-Jennifer Dahne 14-Rebecca Spitz Did you ever notice that when the ark 15-Fred Solomon is opened, our small Torah scrolls 17-Herbert Rovick would sometimes be in disarray — 17-Hazel Solomon some standing, some leaning, some on 20-Sonya Livingston their sides? No more. 20-Lily Bluestein 21-Sheralyn Perry Halushka has lovingly crafted a Rosenblum stand so these scrolls stand straight and 21-Carolyn Draisin tall, ready for our children to proudly 25-Stuart Kestenbaum walk them around our sanctuary. 27-Janet Mendola Thank you, Perry. 28-Nat Delson 29-Sandra Brett 29-Sharon Binder WINDOWS PROGRAM 29-Thomas Russo 30-Charles Kaiser Our community outreach “Windows” program continues to provide a Jewish connection to residents of senior living facilities. Rabbi Rosenbaum visits The Palms in Mount Pleasant, first Thursday of the month, 10:30AM. He visits Harmony/The Crossings in West Ashley, the third Thursday of the month, 11:00AM. Volunteers are needed to accompany the rabbi on these meaningful visits. If you are interested, contact Allan Benezra, 914-329-8336 or [email protected].

Tikun Olam: By All Ages, For All Ages

We are always better together and together we will be as we make Tikun Olam an ever important part of Synagogue Emanu-El. This year, Evaline Delson, our Tikun Olam congregation chair person, was joined by Daphne Hubara and our COSY co-Chairs, Lily Bluestein and Tricia Eisenhart to craft a Tikun Olam initiative. They selected a yearlong theme, Circle of Life. Each quarter, the congregation and COSY will address a specific program targeting different stages of life. Make this the year you volunteer.

Tikun Olam 5780: Circle of Life December/January/February — Infants: Filling the Crib: Nurses in Labor & Delivery often stock their personal lockers with items for new mothers who are not able to afford basic infant items. We’ll place a crib in our lobby and invite congregants to fill it with infant accessories. These items will be distributed as needed at the St. Francis Hospital Mother, Baby and Special Care Nursery.
