Stereotypes and Economic Conditions of Poor Whites in the U.S. "White trash" is, in many ways, the white Other. When we think about race in the U.S., oftentimes we find ourselves constrained by cat- egories we've inherited from a kind of essentialist multiculturalism, or what we call "vulgar multiculturalism."^ Vulgar multiculturalism holds that racial and ethic groups are "authentically" and essentially differ- ent from each other, and that racism is a one-way street: it proceeds out of whiteness to subjugate non-whiteness, so that all racists are white and all victims of racism are non-white. Critical multiculturalism, as it has been articulated by theorists such as those in the Chicago Cultural Studies Group, is one example of a multiculturalism which tries to com- plicate and trouble the dogmatic ways vulgar multiculturalism has un- derstood race, gender, and class identities. "White trash" identity is one we believe a critical multiculturalism should address in order to further its project of re-examining the relationships between identity and social power. Unlike the "whiteness" of vulgar multiculturalism, the whiteness of "white trash" signals something other than privilege and social power. -

PETER MOLIN Frederick Busch and Annie Proulx Forebears of Contemporary War Fiction n an Atlantic magazine article titled “Where’s the Great Novel about the War on Terror?” Matt Gallagher, the author of the Iraq War memoir Kaboom, explored reasons why, as of the time he wrote in 2011, so little fiction had appeared that Iaddressed America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Almost a decade after the first bombs were dropped in Afghanistan,” Gallagher states, “even the most avid bookworm would be hard-pressed to identify a war novel that could be considered definitive of this new generation’s battles.” Gallagher considers several reasons why so little contemporary war fiction had yet been published. The wars’ lack of closure had drained would-be authors’ clarity of vision and sense of purpose. Publishing whims favored domestic subjects aimed at women readers. It was only natural that memoirs constituted the first wave of literary response to the wars and given time more fiction will come. About all these points, and especially the last one, Gallagher is ambivalent. He notes the recent publication of Siobhan Fallon’s collection of short stories You Know When The Men Are Gone, about military life on Fort Hood, Texas, during a time of war, but hesitates to conclude that more war fiction will follow Fallon’s achievement. Iraq and Afghanistan, he suggests, may turn out to be like other “brushfire wars,” such as the Phillipine-American War at the turn of the 20th-century, that never generate “classic” novelistic depiction. Time would prove Gallagher wrong in regard to his last point, for in the coming years a number of story collections and novels heralded what Washington Post book critic Jeff Turrentine would later call a “Golden Age” of contemporary war fiction. -

Montclair State University Montclair State University Digital Commons Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects 8-2020 Architecture of the Mind : Narrative Time and Mental Space in The Graduate, Catch-22, and Carnal Knowledge Monica Cecilia Winston Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalcommons.montclair.edu/etd Part of the English Language and Literature Commons ABSTRACT This thesis explores three of director Mike Nichols’s films produced during the New Hollywood period—The Graduate (1967), Catch-22 (1970), and Carnal Knowledge (1971)—in an effort to trace Nichols’s auteur signature as it relates to the depiction of the protagonist’s subjectivity and renders post-war male anxiety and existential dread. In addition to discussing formal film technique used to depict the mental space of the protagonist, how these subjective sequences are implemented in the film bears implications on the narrative form and situates Nichols alongside other New Hollywood directors who were influenced by art cinema. This analysis, like those posited by other critics influenced by film theorist David Bordwell, distinguishes the term “art cinema” as employing a range of techniques outside of continuity editing that are read as stylistic, and because of this it entails specific modes of viewership in order to find meaning in style. Because of the function of style, the thesis posits thematic kinship among The Graduate, Catch-22, and Carnal Knowledge, which enriches the film’s respective meanings when viewed side by side. A constructionist perspective problematizes and de-naturalizesthe idea of "language,"and suggestshow the fragile textualityof our talk is the resultas much of ideologicalprocesses as of neurobiologicalconstraints. To considerthe constructionof "publics"draws linguistic anthropology in new directions.While the idea that the arenas in which opinions are formed and decisionsare made are the products of social work is not new (cf. Myers and Brenneis1984), "publics" suggests a particular kind of arena, Flabermas's([1962] 1991)"public sphere, ... a categoryof bourgeoissociety." The concept of "public sphere"exposes a new arena for our attention,distinct from the interactionalfield of the marketor the kin group,where peoplewho live in statesspeak "as citizens," with referenceto public affairs,yet not as agentsof the state.
