More bidding advice. DO Bid aggressively when a big fit is uncovered. Good shape and an abundance of trumps can make up for a lack of high-card points. If you’re wondering what I mean by “good shape,” think of a hand such as this one ♠ A J 10 8 7 ♥A 10 7 6 3 ♦5 4 ♣2 If your right-hand opponent opens 1♦, you have a textbook of 2♦. You have the shape – 5-5 in two suits – and a modest hand in terms of high-card points, all of which are in your long suits. Now suppose partner’s hand is ♠ K 5 4 3 2 ♥ 5 2 ♦A ♣8 7 6 3 With the 10-card fit in spades, your two hands can easily make 10 tricks, even if trumps are 3-0 and you misguess the play. If you don’t misguess, you have 11 tricks, losing only a heart and a club. Further, your defensive prospects are poor. You so good that you simply want partner to take a 3♦ = Limit raise or better in partner’s suit will take at most one spade – none if the suit does preference. Of course, declarer can avoid the whole nasty mess by ducking trick one.
