SEVEN HILLS CAPITALIZING ON INVESTMENTS TIES BLACK CAVIAR Q&A By Daithi Harvey With the European Breeze Up season in full flow, the TDN=s WIN RECORD Daithi Harvey caught up with Eamonn O=Connor, who runs the investment scheme Seven Hills Bloodstock. The organisation has a number of interesting juveniles for sale this year, including at this week=s Craven Sale, through Johnny Hassett=s The Bloodstock Connection.

TDN: Can you tell us a little bit about Seven Hills Bloodstock and how long you have been in business?

EO=C: I founded Seven Hills Bloodstock five years ago. My motivation was twofold: a lifelong interest in the bloodstock sector and a belief that, contrary to popular opinion, it was possible to profit by investing in bloodstock. The business was founded at a time when many investors were looking at >alternative= asset classes; yields on traditional investments were Winx in her customary place--in front and alone--at the finish low and there was an appetite for risk, where it could be of the Queen Elizabeth S. | Bronwen Healy justified by considerable upside potential. But if your one peer is the unbeaten world champion sprinter Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}), that=s not too bad. Five years and one day ago, Black Caviar closed out her unbeaten career with a win, her 25th, in the G1 TJ Smith S. at Royal Randwick. Those on track that day likely didn=t expect to see such a spectacle again any time soon, let alone just five years later, but that=s what happened on Saturday when Australia=s latest superstar of the turf, the 6-year-old mare Winx, equaled Black Caviar=s record of 25 consecutive wins in Australia with a stirring score in the A$4-million G1 Queen Elizabeth S. Seven Hills Capitalizing on Investments Cont. TDN: What is the general profile of your investors? Are they predominantly from within the bloodstock industry or are they from various walks of life?

EO=C: The mix is about 50/50. Half have had experience of the sector (mostly through owning racehorses), whilst the other half have had no previous involvement. Interestingly, all of our >non- industry= investors have subsequently gone on to own racehorses in their own right as their experience, interest and Vice President, International Operations enjoyment of the sport has increased. Seven Hills Capitalizing on Investments Cont. TDN: Give us a horse or two you have sold to look out for?

EO=C: I would mention a couple from last year=s draft, both of whom won their maidens impressively at two; Raid (Ire), a colt by Havana Gold (Ire), in training with David Simcock and Pretty Baby (Ire), an Orpen filly in training with William Haggas. Additionally, we are keen to see how a Big Bad Bob (Ire) colt we sold at Goresbridge has fared over the winter. He is in training with Jessica Harrington and was thought worthy of an G1 Irish 2000 Guineas entry. We liked him, even if he wasn=t a profitable horse for us--he was a scopey, backward type in the mould that Jeremy likes to buy and was always going to be better at three.

STEPH LIVELY Who=s Steph (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) bettered a Sept. 9 debut ninth over this course and distance with a breakthrough score upped to one mile at Naas in her only other prior start Oct. 4, and she took a giant leap forward with a game win in this black-type bow and sophomore return. The grey broke well to race in a handy third initially and bounded to the front before halfway. Last off the bridle in the straight, she ran on powerfully under a final- furlong drive to turn down all challenges and register a career high. AShe did that well and went through the [heavy] ground,@ said trainer Ger Lyons. AIf it was good ground we wouldn=t have run her because she wants every bit of a mile. You=d have to be impressed with her and her temperament is to die for. She does everything I want at home and I=m impressed with her. We=ll go home, sit down and make a plan, but we don=t have big early closing entries with her. I=m not a traveller and I love staying at home, so we=ll find something for her here [in Ireland] and there will be no firm in the going description. There=s every chance she could come back here [for the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial] next month, but if a good offer comes in she=ll be sold because she=s a filly. This is the first batch of fillies we=ve ever bought. The horses are well, I=m delighted with them and the ways things are going. The only negative is that I didn=t have the balls to put her in the [G1 Irish 1000] Guineas. The second closing was the other day and I told the lads we=ll leave it and not be silly.@ Cont. p6 TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 6 OF 17 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 15 APRIL 2018

MAGNUM MOON-- FAMED SPORTSWRITER BILL NACK DEAD AT 77 By Bill Finley NATURALLY--IN THE Bill Nack, widely recognized as one of the most talented racing writers of all time, passed away Friday at his home in ARKANSAS DERBY Washington D.C. Nack died following a bout with cancer. He was 77. Best known for his work with Sports Illustrated, where he was employed from 1978 to 2001, Nack covered many sports, but racing was his primary assignment and his first love. His 1990 story Pure Heart on the passing of Secretariat was chosen as one of SI=s 60 most iconic stories. His 1975 book on Secretariat, ASecretariat : The Making of a Champion@ is considered the definitive book on the 1973 Triple Crown winner. ABill was a great reporter, a great writer a great friend, a great colleague,@ said Steve Crist, the former racing writer for the New York Times who later became the publisher of the Daily Racing Form. Robert and Lawana Low=s >TDN Rising Star= Magnum Moon (Malibu Moon) will have his fair share of supporters to add to that total following a front-running defeat of stablemate and fellow >Rising Star= Quip (Distorted Humor) in the Natural State. Somewhat surprisingly sent to the lead by Luis Saez, Magnum Moon slowed the pace down through the middle stages and had plenty left when popped the question, winning with ease, if still a bit green. AA little concerned that he drifted out the last part, but it looked liked he sort of halfway thought about jumping over the tire marks when he went the by the eighth pole where the gate was and sort of skipped over those,@ said trainer Todd Pletcher. Arkansas Derby cont.

Given some rein after a clean dispatch from gate six, Magnum Moon led the Derby field past the post for the first time, with GII Tampa Bay Derby winner Quip to his outside and the ambitiously spotted Machismo (More Than Ready) down to his inner. Tenfold (Curlin) found a good spot just behind that leading trio, while Solomini (Curlin) settled a few places further back before drifting wide on the first turn. Magnum Moon=s opening quarter-mile was :23.34, quick enough on bare analysis, but he managed to accomplish it without overextending himself. In fact, he relaxed further still on the lead, covering an internal half-mile in :50.04, and when Quip tried turning up the pressure on his barnmate at the three- furlong point, Magnum Moon more than had the answers. Saez kicked his mount further in front off the home corner and soon after, Magnum Moon began edging to his right, but the race was in safe keeping. He and fellow >TDN Rising Star= Justify (Scat Daddy) head to Louisville both underfeated and both looking to squelch the so-called Apollo curse dating back to 1882.

AI thought there was going to be a little speed,@ Saez commented. AWe were in a good position, he broke really sharp. I=m not going to choke him, I am just going to stay there and he was very comfortable into the turn he was traveling pretty good. When I came to the stretch, I felt like he was looking at the gate marks so when we got there I touched him a little and he went.@ Quip fought on bravely for second, while Solomini endured a brutally wide trip and did exceptionally well to hang on for third. AHe didn=t break as sharply as we would have liked. He was third best today. The winner is a really nice horse. We=ll talk to Bob [Baffert], but I thought it was a good race and now it=s on to Kentucky,@ said Zayat Stables= Racing Manager Justin Zayat. WITH MORE THAN 1,200 STAKES RACES* LEFT TO RUN IN 2018...
