    Wrabness Suffolk Coast & Heaths Explorer Guide Wrabness Highlights of Wrabness 1 Stour Wood is part of the RSPB’s Stour Explorer Guide Estuary Reserve and is an ancient woodland. The sweet chestnut trees in the wood have been ‘coppiced’ for many centuries. Coppicing is a way of managing woodland by cutting trees and shrubs almost to ground level to encourage many small stems. This practice is A maintained to manage the woodland today. Other trees in the wood include oak, small-leaved lime and the rare wild service tree. On the woodland floor are many interesting plants, including wood spurge, yellow archangel and bluebells. In early April, the woodland is carpeted with the white flowers of the wood anemone. Stour Wood is home to around 40 species of breeding birds, including treecreeper and wren. In spring and early summer you may even hear the song of the nightingale. In the autumn, redwing and fieldfare visit to feed on berries. Insects thrive here, including butterflies like the white admiral and the Delight in two easy walks. (A) Request from a resident - 30 mph stickers . A resident has asked if the Parish Council would consider purchasing 30 mph stickers for the black and brown wheelie bins, the idea being we may get a better price buying in bulk and then selling to residents of Wrabness at cost price. He feels with the black bins out one Thursday followed by the brown bins on the Friday the following week, it could be a good visual reminder to drivers to watch their speed. Parish Council response: Part of parish is in 30mph zone, other homes are in 40mph zone or national limit 60mph. Our Parish is not set up to trade by stocking or selling items. The Village Shop is better placed to stock such items and sell at cost and this idea could be passed on to them. All Agreed this would be a good idea. Mrs. Byrne has offered to look into the costings of the stickers and approach the shop management. From here the route heads through rolling countryside and picturesque villages, to the little port of Mistley, haunt of Matthew Hopkins - ‘The Witchfinder General’. From 1645-1646, he was employed to hunt out the area’s witches. The route returns to Harwich via the River Stour with its views and riverside hamlets. Along this route you can see Robert Adam’s 18th C. towers, discover the bird life in a riverside coppiced wood and stroll atop the historic Ha’penny Pier. Covid numbers are still low in the Tendring area but are rising. There is still a regular briefing from the NHS. Tendring District Local Plan - with an upcoming 6-week public consultation taking place to allow members of the public to comment on recommended modifications - the local plan will hopefully be completed and in place by the end of 2021. Highways - LHP panel meet shortly – will keep Wrabness Parish Council informed about progress on their LHP highway requests. B: A member of the public emailed the Parish Clerk regarding an overgrown footpath running from Rectory Road to the Main Road and sought advice who to approach about clearing the path. It was agreed the Parish Council would report the footpath issue to ECC Highways for attention: Action Parish Clerk. Local Planning Authority: Tendring District Council and Babergh District Council National Grid Reference: TM 180330 Area: 2252.57 (ha) Ordnance Survey Sheet: 1:50,000: 169 1:10,000: TM 03 SE, TM 23 SW, TM 13 SW & SE Date notified: 9 April 2003 Reasons for Notification: The Stour Estuary is nationally important for 13 species of wintering waterfowl and three species on autumn passage. The estuary is also of national importance for coastal saltmarsh, sheltered muddy shores, two scarce marine invertebrates and a vascular scarce plant assemblage. The Stour Estuary includes three nationally important geological sites. These provide exposures of early Eocene sediments containing the volcanic ash formations between Harwich and Wrabness. The same rocks are also important for the fossil fruits and seeds that they contain. At Stutton, much younger Pleistocene sediments have yielded an important and rich fossil vertebrate fauna. General description: The Stour Estuary forms the eastern part of the Essex/Suffolk county boundary. It is a relatively simply structured estuary with a sandy outer area and a muddier inner section. The six main bays, Seafield, Holbrook and Erwarton on the north, and Jacques, Copperas and Bathside on the south, encompass most of the intertidal flats. The mud is extremely rich in invertebrates and this, coupled with its relative lack of disturbance, enables the estuary to support an internationally significant assemblage of wildfowl and wading birds.
