Mr Iskander Bin Mydin, Deputy Director for Curation & Collection, National Museum of Singapore 2 bras basah Originally planned by Sir Stamford Raffles as an European district, Bras Basah derived its name from the Malay term for ‘wet rice’ which were once laid out on the banks of the Bras Basah River (now the Stamford Canal). From the 19th century up to just before World War II, the Bras Basah area became arguably Singapore’s most ethnically diverse residential neighbourhood. Mixed communities of Chinese including Peranakans, as well as Eurasians, Jews, Malays, Indians, Sikhs, Japanese, Armenians, Europeans, and others lived in close proximity, giving the neighbourhood a general middle-class, and in some cases, affluent character. This stretch was once a shopping hub for cane furniture, handbags, jewellery, cameras, art curios, musical instruments, as well as books and magazines from overseas. In addition, there were bakeries, ice-cream and confectionery cafés, restaurants, photo studios, a well-known publishing house, and services such as laundries, car rental, registration and licensing. Old-style hotels also existed with modern air-conditioned and posh cinemas like the Cathay and Capitol — which opened in the 1930s with residential flats, swanky cafés and restaurants on site — introducing a new urban mode of living and entertainment.
