INTRODUCTION B ras Basah.Bugis A unique heritage composition where history, education, religion, art, film, people, memories, and shopping meet, Bras Basah.Bugis (BBB) precinct spans a historically significant urban space spread across a network of roads and streets stretching from Fort Canning Park to Selegie Road and from Rochor Road to Armenian Street. Mr Iskander Bin Mydin, Deputy Director for Curation & Collection, National Museum of Singapore 2 bras basah Originally planned by Sir as an European district, Bras Basah derived its name from the Malay term for ‘wet rice’ which were once laid out on the banks of the Bras Basah River (now the Stamford Canal). From the 19th century up to just before World War II, the Bras Basah area became arguably Singapore’s most ethnically diverse residential neighbourhood. Mixed communities of Chinese including , as well as Eurasians, Jews, Malays, Indians, Sikhs, Japanese, Armenians, Europeans, and others lived in close proximity, giving the neighbourhood a general middle-class, and in some cases, affluent character. This stretch was once a shopping hub for cane furniture, handbags, jewellery, cameras, art curios, musical instruments, as well as books and magazines from overseas. In addition, there were bakeries, ice-cream and confectionery cafés, restaurants, photo studios, a well-known publishing house, and services such as laundries, car rental, registration and licensing. Old-style hotels also existed with modern air-conditioned and posh cinemas like the Cathay and Capitol — which opened in the 1930s with residential flats, swanky cafés and restaurants on site — introducing a new urban mode of living and entertainment. Bras Basah was also an area of churches, temples (Chinese, Hindu, and Sikh), a mosque and a synagogue. These were 1 Junction of Bras Basah Road & Bencoolen accompanied by many schools with long histories, including St, c.1900 – 1930s, Courtesy of National Archives of Singapore some early institutions for girls. 12 3 5 This pre-war precinct was abruptly shaken by the Japanese military invasion of Singapore in 1942. Its open spaces were quickly taken over by Allied soldiers to pitch their tents as the surrounding schools were turned into make-shift hospitals for the war wounded, while refugees and the homeless from bombed-out shophouses streamed into the area. When Singapore came under the Japanese Occupation, the Waterloo Street area was used by the Indian National Army, who turned it into their parade ground as they plotted how to free India circa 1960 today from colonialism. The end of the Occupation led to the departure of the 6 pre-war Japanese community in the Middle Road area, and they were soon followed by the Eurasian, Jewish and other residents. Bras Basah lost its multi-ethnic heritage, and 4 the Middle Road area became home to the radical trade unions that were swept into Singapore’s political struggle for independence. They too would go as rapid socio-economic development and urban renewal would take hold of the young nation, transforming Bras Basah’s façade. Over the decades, circa 1900 today many century-old shophouses on Bras Basah Road and old schools gave way to redevelopment, and the architecturally Where the former Raffles Girls’ Primary School (5) stood at Bras Basah Road in the 1960s is where you’ll iconic Eu Court and the National Library Building were among find Singapore Management University’s Lee Kong Chian School of Business today.
