Real choices need good voter turnout We’ve seen the day when voters had a choice between Tweedledee and Tweedledum. In such a race, maybe your vote didn’t count for much. Not this year. This year, voters have some real choices in Kansas. And ev- ery vote will count. The races for governor and the U.S. Senate seem close, so close that if anyone stays home, they will have missed their chance to make the decision. That close. In a state where the Republican candidates often enjoy a big edge, there should be a lot of suspense election night, maybe well into the morning. Who will be governor? Sam Brownback has accomplished things Kansas needed: He stopped the ever-ballooning growth of the budget, cut taxes and started a badly needed trimming of state government. In the process, his supporters pushed a gaggle of liberal Re- publicans over the edge and into the Democratic fold, at least temporarily. They picked some fights they didn’t have to, in- cluding one with teachers unions over tenure. The governor hasn’t done that bad a job. Playing the Percentages On many deals, declarer has to choose between two different lines of play, knowing that if he chooses the wrong one, he will have no chance to try the other. In deciding what to do in these cases, declarer’s best bet is to rely on basic prob- abilities. For example, consider this deal where South is in three notrump. When dummy appears, he can Todd the Dinosaur • Patrick Roberts count seven top tricks -- two spades, a heart, two diamonds and two clubs -- and therefore needs to develop two more winners. There are two possibilities. He can cross to dummy with a diamond at trick two and take a heart finesse. If it succeeds, he can return to dum- my with another diamond and repeat the finesse. Since East and West are equally likely to hold the heart king, the chance that this approach will suc- ceed is an even 50 percent. South’s other option is to attempt to establish dummy’s diamonds. This can be accomplished, if the missing diamonds are divided 3-2, by al- lowing the defenders to win the first lead of the suit and later using his remaining diamond as an Zits • Jim Borgman & Jerry Scott entry to dummy. In trying to choose which method of play is more likely to succeed, it is obviously helpful for declarer to know that the chance of a 3-2 division is 68 percent. Consequently, the winning line of play in the long run would be to deliberately lose the first diamond trick, which would succeed about two- thirds of the time, as opposed to relying on a heart finesse, which would win only half the time. In the actual deal, declarer makes four notrump if he concedes a diamond trick early in the play, but goes down one if he tries a heart finesse in- stead. (c)2014 King Features Syndicate Inc.
