Michèle Mendelssohn, Making Oscar Wilde (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2018), 360 pp. ISBN 9780198802365 Matthew Sturgis, Oscar: A Life (London: Head of Zeus Ltd, 2018), 890 pp. ISBN 9781788545976 Richard Haslam Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia In ‘The Critic as Artist’ (1890; 1891), Oscar Wilde’s spokesperson Gilbert declares ‘Every great man nowadays has his disciples, and it is always Judas who writes the biography.’1 One book that bears out Gilbert’s claim is Lord Alfred Douglas’ Oscar Wilde and Myself (1914), but many later biographers have served Wilde more charitably, and none more so than Richard Ellmann, whose influential 1987 account concludes that Wilde was ‘so generous, so amusing, and so right’.2 Of course, as Horst Schroeder and others have argued, Ellmann’s book (although itself ‘generous’ and ‘amusing’) was not always ‘right’ about the details of Wilde’s life, and Matthew Sturgis mentions this deficiency as one justification for producing another biography. -

Preface This is the third edition, with some additions and amendments (and a complete re-numbering), of the edition originally published in 2004 under Richard Emeny’s name, with myself as the editor. The interest in Edward Thomas’s poetry and prose writings has grown considerably over the past few years, and this is an opportune moment to make the whole checklist freely available and accessible. The intention of the list is to provide those with an interest in Thomas with the tools to understand his enormous contribution to criticism as well as poetry. This is very much a work in progress. I can’t say that I have produced a complete or wholly accurate list, and any amendments or additions would be gratefully received by sending them to me at [email protected]. They will be incorporated in the list and acknowledged. -

WHITAKER Under the Direction of LeeAnne Richardson, PhD ABSTRACT This project follows the life of the late-Victorian poet John Gray, who was born into lower- middle class poverty in London. Gray educated himself, rising from clerical positions with the Post Office and the Foreign Office, before meeting Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon, who published his early work, and designed the seminal book of fin de siècle verse Silverpoints, for which Gray earned the epithet le plus decadent des decadents. This project considers the ways in which Gray’s associations with Ricketts and Shannon, along with Oscar Wilde, André Raffalovich and the aunt and niece couple writing as Michael Field impacted his life, from the publication of his early decadent poetry, to his renunciation of the London demimonde, to eventual ordination in the Roman Catholic Church. -

Craig Wilmann MRes Playwriting Studies Abstract This thesis consists of an original play script and an accompanying essay. The play, entitled The Picture of John Gray, is based loosely on a true story, about the nineteenth century poet, John Gray. It is comprised of two acts, six scenes and six characters. The action takes place in a total of four locations: The house of Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon, the house of John Gray, a hot air balloon over Berlin and a Church in Edinburgh. The play’s protagonist is John Gray and, through the course of the play, the audience observes his journey from idealistic, young poet, to mature, world-wary priest. It also witnesses the birth, death and resurrection of his relationship with Andre Raffalovich. Thematically, the play explores love and friendship under pressure, the necessity of marriage, the relationship between laws and morality, and the reality of life for homosexuals in a society that does not understand or accept them. -

Clark Library. Language of Material: English . Provenance William Andrews Clark, Jr. acquired the nucleus of the Clark Library's Oscar Wilde collection from Dulau and Company, London, in 1929. Most of the Dulau material had been in the possession of Robert B. Ross (Oscar Wilde's literary executor), Christopher S. Millard (a.k.a. Stuart Mason, the Wilde bibliographer), and Vyvyan B. Holland (Wilde's only surviving son). Since 1929, the Clark Library has steadily purchased important new material and in the year 2000, the collection was estimated to contain over 65,000 items. It appears that large segments of the Wildeiana collection were likely originally part of the collection assembled by Wilde bibliographer Christopher Millard. The actual date the Clark acquired these materials is unknown and any documentation about the source of these items has been lost. -

University Museums and Special Collections Service Robert Harborough Sherard Collection MS 1047 The collection contains around 650 personal and business letters written to Sherard 1908-1943 by over 200 correspondents, including Lord Alfred Douglas and Robert Ross. There are copies of three letters from Oscar Wilde. In addition, there are around 200 letters written by Sherard 1906-1937 (mainly copies), around 70 letters to Alice Muriel Fiddian, Sherard's third wife, and 35 other items of correspondence. There are two of Sherard's diaries, one covering the period July 22 - December 31 1934 and consisting chiefly of a record of letters written, and the other relating to Oscar Wilde twice defended and covering the period 1933-1939. The collection also contains newspaper cuttings 1887-1943, mainly relating to Sherard's work. There are around 60 typescripts and manuscripts of his articles, novels and short stories. Other items include photographs and prints of people and places c. 1920-1939, two family wills, documents relating to legal disputes, notes and other sundry papers. The collection is supported by around 40 printed books by Sherard, plus pamphlets, periodicals and offprints containing his work. The Collection covers the year’s 1868-1957. The physical extent of the collection is 12 boxes and 3 oversize items. Introduction Robert Harborough Sherard was born in London on 3 December 1861, the fourth child of the Reverend Bennet Sherard Calcraft Kennedy. His father was the illegitimate son of the sixth and last Earl of Harborough and his mother, Jane Stanley Wordsworth, granddaughter of the poet. In 1880 he went up to New College, Oxford but after a quarrel with his father, who cut him off from the expected family inheritance, was forced to leave for financial reasons. -

Contents (5 items): 4 letters, 1 set of notes. Ross Env b.2.i A letter (1 leaf, manuscript) from H.V.S. [Hedley Vicars Storey, author and bookseller, manager of the Shelley Book Agency, 1870-1929] to Christopher Millard [Christopher Sclater Millard, author and bookseller, 1872- 1927]; dated 14th February 1912. Storey writes that he has been unwell and has gone to Brighton to recover. He explains that he has written to a friend in Oxford who will look at Pan and get the information Millard wants, noting that he was not well enough to go to the Bodleian before he left Oxford but will write again when he hears more. He also writes that he has something to send to Millard and that he recently read Millard’s letter about Oscar Wilde’s letters [the title of the publication not deciphered] and that he bought one of Wilde’s letters two years ago and, although he sold it, kept a copy which he asks if Millard would like to see. He concludes by sympathising with Millard over his financial situation and explaining that he too has yet to make his fortune, noting that his partnership was the ‘biggest trouble of my life’ [the name of Storey’s partner could not be deciphered]. Olive Custance (1874-1944)
OLIVE CUSTANCE (1874-1944) Olive Eleanor Custance was born on February 7, 1874, the eldest daughter of Colonel Frederic Hambledon Custance and Eleanor Constance Jolliffe. Her family were wealthy members of the landed gentry, descended from Sir Francis Bacon, and she grew up at their country seat, Weston Old Hall, Norfolk. Given her gender and social status, it is surprising that from an early age Custance began to write poetry and integrate herself into the decadent literary milieu. Her diaries show she identified with and avidly followed the careers of Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde, and she had a particular penchant for the Atelier G.C. Beresford. Mark Samuels Lasner age of 16, Custance experienced a pivotal Collection, University of Delaware Library, Newark. encounter with the Decadent poet John Gray at a London party. She was evidently inspired by Gray’s beauty (rumoured to have been the inspiration for Wilde’s Dorian Gray) and wrote several poems addressed to a mysterious "Prince of Dreams" who bears a scarcely veiled resemblance to him. Although their encounter was brief, Custance and Gray continued to correspond and he offered her advice about her poetry. Custance also struck up a close friendship with Richard Le Gallienne, who reviewed and praised her work. Her early poetry was supported and encouraged by John Lane, who published her poem “Twilight” in Volume 3 of The Yellow Book (October 1894), followed by several more of her poems in later volumes of the magazine. 1 Custance’s first book of poetry, entitled Opals, was published in 1897 by Lane’s press The Bodley Head.
