Fédération Internationale de [email protected] Telephone +41.21.345.3535 FACT SHEET – $440,000 FIVB Sao Paulo Grand Slam Round 9 of 2013 FIVB World Tour Sao Paulo, Brazil, October 8-13, 2013 · Updated on October 5, 2013, this fact sheet provides information on the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), based in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball season. The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour calendar features FIVB-record 10 Grand Slam events along with the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland. The FIVB has also launched a new initiative in 2013 which includes five Open events spread throughout the world to help open the door for development of the sport. The schedule started in April in China and concludes in December in South Africa. This will mark the 27th season of the FIVB World Tour which held its first event on February 17-22, 1987 in , Brazil · The US$440,000 FIVB Sao Paulo Grand Slam is the ninth of 10 double gender Grand Slam events, each with a purse of $440,000, on the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball season calendar. For more info regarding FIVB Beach Volleyball, please visit http://www.fivb.org · October 8-13, Sao Paulo Grand Slam, Men and Women, $440,000 – Brazil has hosted 63 previous FIVB World Tour events, 34 men’s and 29 women’s, including the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 2003. Rio de Janeiro will also serve as host to the 2016 Olympics. The FIVB World Tour has played at least one event in Brazil every season since its inception 27 years ago with Rio de Janeiro hosting the most events with 21 (14 men’s and 7 women’s), followed by Fortaleza with ten (six men’s and four women’s). This is the first time, however, that the FIVB has played in Sao Paulo. Brazilian teams have been very successful on their home soil, winning 60 men’s medals (21 gold, 18 silver, 21 bronze) and 52 women’s medals (18 gold, 16 silver, 18 bronze). · The Sao Paulo Grand Slam starts October 8 and concludes October 13. 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball Season – Sao Paulo Grand Slam

The Sao Paulo Grand Slam is the ninth double-gender grand slam event of the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball season. After Sao Paulo, the World Tour will take a one-week break before concluding its season with the final double-gender Grand Slam in Xiamen, China from October 22-27. Even though the World Tour season will be over, there is a women’s only Open in Phuket, Thailand the following week from October 29 through November 3 and two more double-gender Opens, one in Vizag, India from November 12-17 and the last event of the year in Durban, South Africa, to be held from December 11-15.

2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball Season Men’s & Women’s Highlights The 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour schedule is comprised of FIVB-record ten Grand Slam events along with the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Stare Jablonki, Poland. The FIVB launched a new initiative in 2013 which includes five Open events spread throughout the world to help open the door for development of the sport. The schedule started in April and concludes in December. The year of 2013 also marks the 26th anniversary of the first FIVB Beach Volleyball event held February 17-22 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The gold medal was won by USA’s Sinjin Smith/Randy Stoklos. The men’s world tour began in 1989, the women’s in 1992. Smith/Stoklos were the champions of the inaugural season in 1989-90.

· The international Beach Volleyball circuit is visiting 16 sites in 13 countries over a nine month period. · With the 2013 calendar featuring 16 women’s and 15 men’s events within the African, Asian, European and South American confederations, the FIVB international calendar will offer US$6.42 million in prize money, including $5.4 million on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. · All 10 FIVB World Tour Grand Slam events will be combined events for women and men. Four of the FIVB Open events will be double-gender and one will be women-only. · The women’s-only Open tournament will be in Thailand (Phuket). · The new Grand Slam events this year are in Argentina (Corrientes), Netherlands (The Hague), USA (Long Beach, Calif.), Brazil (Sao Paulo), and China (Xiamen). · The $4.4 million FIVB World Tour Grand Slam series is returning to 2012 venues in China (Shanghai), Italy (Rome), Switzerland (Gstaad), Germany (Berlin), and Russia (Moscow). · Poland (Stare Jablonki) hosted the $1 million FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships for the first time (July 1-7). Stare Jablonki has hosted nine men’s & five women’s FIVB World Tour events including several Grand Slam events. · The opening event on the 2013 FIVB World Tour calendar for the first time in tour history was the double-gender Shanghai Grand Slam April 30-May 5. The first FIVB Open event was the Fuzhou Open on April 23-28 as China hosts three FIVB international tournaments in 2013, including a second FIVB World Tour Grand Slam in Xiamen on Oct. 22-27. · The 2013 FIVB World Tour Grand Slam series will conclude in China (Xiamen) on Oct. 22-27. The FIVB Open schedule will end in South Africa (Durban Open) with a double gender event on Dec. 11-15. · For the first time in beach volleyball history, the international Beach Volleyball calendar also features FIVB world championships for players under the age of 23, under the age of 21 and under the age of 19. FIVB age-group worlds for U-21 and U-19 have been held for over a decade, but 2013 will be the first for U-23. Myslowice, Poland hosted the 2013 FIVB U-23 World Championships June 6-9, while Umag, Croatia hosted the FIVB U-21 World Championships June 20-23 and Porto, Portugal will host the 2013 FIVB U-19 World Championships July 11-14 for players under the age of 19. · Brazil (Campinas) hosted the inaugural FIVB World Cup Final that involved all FIVB confederations, May 29-June 2. · IMG Sports Media continues to have the exclusive distribution media rights for the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. For the fourth straight year, the tour is exclusively using the Mikasa VLS 300 ball. It was introduced in 2009.

The gold medal was won by USA’s Sinjin Smith/Randy Stoklos. The men’s world tour began in 1989, the women’s in 1992. Smith/Stoklos were the champions of the inaugural season in 1989-90. · In 2012, international beach volleyball events visited 17 sites in 14 countries over a seventh-month period. · With the 2012 world tour calendar featuring 12 women’s and 11 men’s events within the African, Asian, European and South American confederations, the FIVB World Tour offered US$6.12 million in prize money. · Nine of the tournaments were combined men’s and women’s events, including all eight Grand Slam stops. · Women’s-only stops were in China (Sanya), Finland (Aland) and Thailand (Bang Saen). · Men’s only stops were in Poland (Myslowice) and Czech Republic (Prague). · The new Grand Slam event this year was in China (Shanghai). · The $4.8 million FIVB World Tour Grand Slam series also returned to 2011 venues in China (Beijing), Russia (Moscow), Italy (Rome), Switzerland (Gstaad), Austria (Klagenfurt) and Poland (Stare Jablonki). The tour also returned for the first time since 2008 to Germany (Berlin). · Klagenfurt and Gstaad have each staged 10 or more FIVB-sanctioned Beach Volleyball events. Both sites have hosted the FIVB World Championships with Klagenfurt in 2001 and Gstaad in 2007. · The opening event on the 2012 FIVB World Tour calendar was a double gender event in Brasília April 15-22 as the Brazilian capital celebrated its 52nd anniversary on the seventh day of competition. During the April 21 Brasília celebrations, crowds of more than 1-million attended various holiday activities around the event. · The iconic Horse Guards Parade in central London was the site of the London 2012 which ran from July 28 through August 9. USA’s Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh won their third consecutive Olympic gold medal with USA’s Jennifer Kessy/April Ross earning the silver medal. A special Olympic test event for 24 women’s teams was held on the site in August of 2011with Brazil’s Liliane Maestrini/Angela Vieira defeating USA’s Kessy/Ross in the gold medal match. · A total of 16 teams from each gender out of the 24 teams participating in the 2012 London Olympics, qualified through qualification rankings from the FIVB World Tour. · China once again staged three and Poland presented two FIVB World Tour stops in 2012. · The men’s international schedule concluded in August in Poland (Stare Jablonki) while the women’s competition will end in late October in Thailand (Bang Saen). · The international beach volleyball calendar also features world championships for players under the age of 21 and under the age of 19. Larnaca, Cyprus hosted the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball Youth World Championships July 11-14 for players under the age of 19. For the second consecutive year, Canada will host in Halifax, Nova Scotia Aug. 29-Sept. 2 the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior World Championships for players under the age of 21. This was the first time for Cyprus to host one of these age group FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. The U-19 world championships in 2011 were held in Umag, Croatia before Canada hosted the U-21s in Halifax. · IMG Sports Media continued to have the exclusive distribution media rights for the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.
