    Speech from the Throne 2018 Honourable Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, invited guests, and all New Brunswickers: It is my honour and privilege to welcome you to the First Session of the 59th Legislative Assembly of the Province of New Brunswick. I would like to begin by acknowledging that the land on which we gather is the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqey Mi’kmaq and Peskotomuhkati Peoples. Congratulations / Recognition A number of New Brunswickers have had noteworthy achievements since our last session of the legislature. We thank and congratulate the candidates who put their names forward for the recent provincial election. Of them, 38.6 per cent were women, which is an increase from the 32.2 per cent who ran in 2014. Congratulations and welcome to New Brunswick’s new MLAs. Eleven New Brunswickers were named to the Order of New Brunswick, including Judy Astle, Charles Bernard, Roberta Dugas, Louise Imbeault, Gaetan Lanteigne, Walter Learning, James Lockyer, Rebecca Schofield (posthumous), F. Eileen Wallace, and Ed and Eke van Oorschot. Five New Brunswickers became Members of the Order of Canada, including Claude Snow of Caraquet; Christl Verduyn of Sackville; W. Dale Dauphinee of Montreal and St. Andrews; Patricia “Patsy” Gallant of Campbellton; and Jean-Claude Savoie of Saint-Quentin. The Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus found out why on Wednesday. The Reds scored four first-period goals en route to crushing the visiting Aigles Bleus 10-0 in an Atlantic University Sport conference game at the Aitken University Centre in Fredericton. UNB, which improved its conference-leading record to 19-1-3, was coming off its first regulation time loss of the season in its previous game. Kris Bennett scored a power-play goal at 8:45 of the first period and Matthew Boucher struck with a short-handed marker five minutes later to get the Reds off and running. They never slowed down. The Reds got back-to-back goals from Mark Rassell and Joe Gatenby just 29 seconds apart late in the first period, and the rout was on. They added four goals in the second period and completed the evening with two more in the third. UNB outshot Moncton 52-17. The Aigles Bleus - tied with the St. Francis Xavier X-Men for third place in the AUS and winners of three of their previous four games - slipped to 11-9-3 on the season. Moncton, which beat UNB in a shootout on home ice in the first semester, hasn’t won at the Aitken University Centre since October, 2012. “We need to forget this game quickly,” dejected Aigles Bleus head coach Judes Vallée said following the game.

The victory moved Moncton’s record to 4-3-2, good for fourth place in the AUS. How bad is it for the Aigles Bleus? Ro okie defenceman Mathieu Martin will miss the next two to three weeks with an ankle injury suffered on the basketball court as part of one of his classes. Then, this week in practice, forward Luc Williams and third-string goaltender Patrick Earle,who has been pressed into the lineup as a backup,were both hurt. They’re questionable for this weekend’s games. Bourgeois does not use injuries as an excuse for Moncton’s struggles this season, but he wonders what his club would look like with a full lineup. Captain and key two-way forward Alex Emond and veteran defenceman Christopher Guay have missed most of the season. No. 1 goaltender Adrien Lemay has not yet played in the second semester due to a concussion. “I’m ready to go see a witch or something to cast a spell to take the curse off me,”Bourgeois said. “I think that’s the most frustrating part of coaching,and even the players feel the same way. The organization was called the Grand Caledonian Curling Club. Five years later, in 1843, Her Majesty, Queen Victoria gave permission to use the word Royal. The word Grand, being considered superfluous, was dropped, and since that time has been the Royal Caledonian Curling Club. The Royal Caledonian Curling Club bestowed the powers of a Branch on the Halifax Curling Club in 1851. This authority was given up in December of 1852 when the Halifax Curling Club, the Halifax Thistle Curling Club, and the Dartmouth Curling Club formed the Nova Scotia Branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club. In February 1852, the Pictou Curling Club became a member. The New Caledonian Curling Club of Pictou and the New Glasgow Curling Club were admitted to membership in 1854. Antigonish was admitted to membership in 1856. The Nova Scotia Branch was active until the year 1862. It became inactive from 1863 until 1867. After having held three executive meetings in January and February 1867, it became dormant until it's revival in 1904. The first curling game of record arranged by the Nova Scotia Branch was between Halifax, Thistle, and Dartmouth Clubs on January 1st, 1851 at 10:00 a.m.
