Dear Parishioners,

“Father I have sinned against heaven and you.” (Luke 15:21)

Th e word “prodigal” means “waster or squanderer,” one who wastes gifts and resources. Th e title tells how the son “squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.” It is interesting and poignant that the father allows his younger son to leave. Sometimes the worst thing God can do is to give us what we want--to show us that our desires can’t always bring satisfaction. Th e prodigal son got what he wanted, but lost what he had. When we rebel against God’s will He sometimes says, “All right, YOUR will be done! See how you like it!” God’s most severe punishment may be to give us what we want. Th e lost son lusted for freedom without restraints and ended up enslaving himself. When his money ran out, his so-called friends deserted him--they were only friends of his wealth. He learned the hard way that we can’t enjoy the things money can buy if we ignore the things money cannot buy. Sin promises freedom but it only brings slavery...it promises success, but it only brings failure...it promises life, but brings death.

When he gets to the point where he has nothing left, no money, friends, food, shelter or dignity, the prodigal son complains about no one but himself. He speaks of no unworthiness but his own. He doesn’t blame his plight on his former evil companions. He admits his eagerness to leave the protection of his home and off ers no excuses to cover his guilt or justify his waywardness. It is in this “mature” realization that repentance and eventual change of life can occur. Guilt and shame are painful to face, yet we desperately need to see ourselves for what we are. Only then can we respond to God’s mercy. Th e returned son attempts to deliver his prepared speech to his father. He admits he has sinned against “heaven,” too ashamed to even speak the name of God. He begins, but doesn’t get to fi nish, for his father calls to the servants to bring out the best robe--to cover the son’s poverty and shame; a ring--as a seal and symbol of his identity as a member of the household; and shoes--so that he can now walk in a new way...also, shoes were not worn by servants! Th e father does not humiliate his son, but welcomes him into all the privileges of the family and treats him with honor.

Sometimes we think we need to clean ourselves up before we come to Jesus. All we need is to come home...and the Father will give His best even though we have sinned. If you’re afraid to come to Jesus; if you’re ashamed of your past; if all you have to off er is your heart to Jesus, then do it!. St. Paul reminds us today, “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” Th is is a reminder and an invitation from God Himself. So I implore you in the name of Jesus…go to confession, and then remember the loving father of the prodigal son. He is, in fact, the Father of us all, and is ready to run to us with open arms. What a beautiful image...what a beautiful God!

Th is past Saturday (March 23rd) three of our parishioners, William Simone, Brett Bosse and Devin Murphy O’Brien were inducted as Eagle Scouts at a Court of Honor. Th is prestigious and highest rank in Boy Scouting is nationally recognized as an award for service and outstanding character. I know you join me in congratulating William, Brett and Devin in achieving this most wonderful milestone in their lives.

A reminder that Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday night at 7:30pm in the Church. Use these last few weeks of Lent wisely to deepen your relationship with Jesus.

In Jesus our Crucifi ed Lord, Fr. Bob

Th e Fourth Sunday of Lent | March 31, 2019 Stewards of God’s Gifts Scripture is full of examples of God’s love for us. Th is week’s reading provides a wonderful example of God’s fi erce love and extreme forgiveness. Th e prodigal son is in every one of us. When we turn to sin in order to do what we want to do, we insult God’s amazing gift of free will. God, however, does not “hold a grudge” or “dislike us.” Instead, He is, like the forgiving father in the story, waiting for us to return to Him. God is longing to greet you in Confession, to off er His embracing and forgiving love through the power of the Sacrament of Penance. We are grateful for all Christian stewards who use the season of Lent as an opportunity for profound reconciliation with our Father in heaven by going to Confession and inviting others to celebrate the sacrament of Penance with humility and courage. Th e collection for Sunday, March 24, 2019 amounted to $25,068.00. Th e collection for Sunday, March 25, 2018 amount was not available.

Church of Saint Mary | 8 Respect Life Ministry

Heeding the call to protect human life from conception to natural death, the Respect Life Ministry met on Tuesday, March 26th, to discuss steps we can take in the current climate. As Bishop Barres wrote, “It is our obligation as citizens and as Catholics, to be well informed and to make our voices heard in the public square when evil and injustice threaten the sacred gift of life at any stage.” Sister Lucia of Fatima once wrote that those who work for the good of the family will experience persecution and tribulation – as the fi nal battle between the Lord and Satan would be about marriage and the family – but do not be afraid, she added, because Our Lady has already crushed his head.

1) STAY INFORMED AND EDUCATED: • If you have not yet done so, please read Bishop Barres’s letter, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” (http:// respectlife.drvc.org/). Th e brief letter sheds light on what New York’s new law really means. It does not simply codify Roe v. Wade; it allows abortion right up to birth. Th e letter clearly and concisely outlines the major implications of the law. • News reports of Mississippi’s new law to protect the unborn once a fetal heartbeat can be detected consistently state that a heartbeat can be detected in just six weeks. Yet, opponents threaten a legal challenge.

2) GET INVOLVED: • Write personal letters. Make your voice heard. Write to elected representatives, university presidents, CEOs, and others in positions of infl uence when they take a stand against life. • Alive From New York: Saturday, May 4th, 4-D ultrasound in Times Square (presented by Focus On Th e Family). • Lobby For Life Day, Wednesday, May 1st, Legislative Offi ce Building, Albany NY, 10 AM - Noon followed by lobby appointments with your legislators.

3) PRAY: • Parish Lenten Mission, Wednesday, April 10th, facilitated by the Sisters of Life. • St. Mary’s Day of Prayer and Action for Life now in the planning stages. • Continue to pray particularly for our elected offi cials.

Each year, Ladies’ Night Out serves as the main fundraiser and social event for the High School where more than 200 gather to celebrate the School. This year, the event was themed “Do You Remember,” which focused on the sounds of the 70s as current parents, daughters, past parents, alumnae, administrators, and friends enjoyed a delicious cocktail hour, shopped the boutique, purchased raffle tickets, and danced the night away to fabulous music provided by DJ Flex. The Gaels Parents’ Association leadership recognized mothers who have daughters graduating this year and thanked them for the friendship, support of the school and its activities for the past four years. With an abundance of raffle prizes, guestscreated fun vying for their ‘Drop in the Box’ wins, took their chances with the mystery ‘Wine Pull,’ and the 50/50 raffle. Many went home with incredible prizes. A highlight of the event was the terrific number of alumnae who came back to spend an evening with their former classmates and made the night a mini-reunion while supporting their alma mater. Saint Mary’s High School is grateful to all of the sponsors, underwriters, donors, and attendees who made the event such a success for the School. A special thank you to the committee members who worked so hard planning the fundraiser these past few months. We cannot thank you enough for the love and dedication you have for St. Mary’s High School. All proceeds from the event will go towards the renovation of the cafeterias in Marist and Immaculata Halls. If you would like to contribute to this special project, please contact the Office of Development and Alumni Relations at 627-4605 or E-mail [email protected].
