MILKMEN TAKE SERIES OPENER: The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 6-2 to the Milwaukee Milkmen at Franklin Field on Tuesday night. Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out throwing error. Jonathan Moroney homered leading off the top of the third to tie the game, but the Milkmen answered in the bottom half with two runs on an error and a two-out single from Logan Trowbridge. Milwaukee added two more in the fourth on a Christian Correa solo home run and an Adam Brett Walker two-out, RBI double. Moroney cut the deficit to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth. Milwaukee answered again in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, RBI single from Walker. Frank Duncan started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing six runs, three earned, on nine hits in 6.0 innings. Duncan walked two and struck out four. Nate Antone and Dylan Rheault each pitched 1.0 scoreless inning of relief for Winnipeg.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE MILKMEN: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 5-5 all-time against the Milwaukee Milkmen, including a 2-4 record in road games, and a 2-3 record at Franklin Field. The Milkmen are in their second year of existence, and finished 38-62 during their expansion season in 2019. The Milkmen opened Franklin Field on June 24 th , 2019 with a 3-2 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats before earning its first official home win the following night over Gary SouthShore, 8-2. The facility is located in Franklin, Wisconsin, a suburb of downtown Milwaukee, and also plays host to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Panthers) team. Inclement weather during the winter of 2019 led to construction delays, and the Milkmen played their first 14 home games at Kokomo Municipal Stadium in Kokomo, Indiana. Kokomo is home to the Northwoods League’s Kokomo Jackrabbits, a college summer wood bat team under the same ownership group as the Milkmen. The Milkmen went 7-7 during the games at Kokomo. Anthony Barone, who served as Milwaukee’s bench coach in 2019, takes over as the club’s manager. Barone previously managed the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s (PGCBL) Jamestown Jammers from 2015-18, winning a championship in 2018. Barone was named PGCBL Coach of the Year in both 2017 and 2018.

SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 23-16 and in first place in the American Association. The Goldeyes just won two of three from the Sioux Falls Canaries at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Goldeyes are second in the American Association in hitting (.281), second in pitching (4.17), and fourth in fielding (.975). The Milwaukee Milkmen are 22-18, in second place, and 1.5 games behind the Goldeyes. The Milkmen are sixth in the league in batting (.252), first in pitching (4.05), and first in defence (.979). This is the first of three head-to-head series between this season between Winnipeg and Milwaukee. The Goldeyes were 5-4 against the Milkmen in 2019.

PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with right- 8/20 at MIL: LHP Evan Grills (0-2, 7.13) vs. RHP Henderson Alvarez (0-0, 2.25) hander Kevin Hilton who is 5-1 with a 3.05 ERA in six starts 8/21 vs. MIL: TBA vs. TBA and two relief appearances this season. Hilton is fourth in 8/22 vs. MIL: TBA vs. TBA the American Association in ERA. Hilton last pitched on 8/23 vs. MIL: TBA vs. TBA Sunday, working 1.0 scoreless relief inning at Sioux Falls. Hilton’s last start was on August 12 th vs. Fargo-Moorhead where he picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings. Hilton walked one and struck out four.

Hilton was an American Association All-Star in 2019, combining for a 5-10 record with a 4.40 ERA in 20 starts for the Goldeyes and Texas AirHogs. Hilton finished third in the American Association in innings pitched (133.0), and tied for first in wins above replacement (WAR) among rookie pitchers (1.5). The Goldeyes acquired Hilton along with Jonathan Moroney from the AirHogs on August 9 th in exchange for four players to be named later. Hilton allowed four or fewer earned runs in 15 of his 20 starts in 2019, and pitched at least 6.0 innings in 14 of them. Hilton pitched 1.0 scoreless inning of relief for the South Division during the American Association All-Star Game on July 23rd at St. Paul.

Hilton missed the 2018 season due to injury, and was a true rookie for the AirHogs in 2017 where he was 1-2 with a 4.93 ERA in three starts and eight relief appearances. In his final appearance of the season on August 31 st vs. Salina, Hilton picked up his first career win with a complete game.

Hilton played three seasons of college baseball at California State University, San Marcos in San Marcos, California. Hilton was a combined 10-7 with two saves and a 4.19 ERA in 133.1 innings for the Cougars from 2012-14. In three seasons of professional baseball, Hilton is 11-13 with a 4.24 ERA in 39 games, 29 of them as a starting pitcher.

Hilton is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in two career starts against Milwaukee. Hilton is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in one career start at Franklin Field.

The Milkmen go with former Major League left-hander David Holmberg who is 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in eight starts this season. Holmberg is second in the American Association in ERA and tied for third in . Holmberg picked up the win at Chicago last Thursday, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 7.0 innings. Holmberg walked three and struck out eight. Holmberg has allowed two or fewer earned runs in five of his eight starts, and has allowed three or fewer earned runs in all of them.

Holmberg was 2-8 with a 5.17 ERA in 20 starts last season for the Atlantic League’s Somerset Patriots, striking out 66 and walking 29 in 87.0 innings.

Holmberg reached the Major Leagues from 2013-15 and again in 2017 with the , , and . Holmberg was a combined 5-10 with a 5.49 ERA in 119.2 Major League innings. Holmberg was drafted by the White Sox in the second round in 2009 out of Port Charlotte High School (Port Charlotte, Florida). Holmberg was traded from the White Sox to the Diamondbacks on July 30 th , 2010 in exchange for right-handed pitcher . Holmberg is in his 12 th season of professional baseball, and is 66-81 lifetime with a 4.07 ERA in 279 appearances, 228 of them as a starting pitcher.

Tonight will be Holmberg’s first career appearance against Winnipeg. Holmberg is 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA in five career starts at Franklin Field.

GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 15 th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 24 th overall within the organization. During his first 14 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .547 overall winning percentage (755-626), 11 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and managed the American Association during the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game in 2017. Forney’s .555 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-19) is the fourth-highest in league history (there have been 56 total American Association managers through the 2019 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995.

GOLDEYES WELCOME NEW HITTING COACH: The Winnipeg Goldeyes introduced Kash Beauchamp as their hitting coach last November. Beauchamp enjoyed a 14-year playing career in which he reached Triple-A in six different seasons. The former first overall draft pick (January phase, 1982) compiled a .285 career batting average in 1,083 professional games. In 1993, Beauchamp hit .367 for the Northern League’s Rochester Aces (the franchise that eventually became the Winnipeg Goldeyes), and became the first position player in independent baseball history to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization (Cincinnati Reds). Beauchamp has 10 years of managerial experience in independent baseball, and currently serves as the independent leagues scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

DARVILL NAMED BATTER OF THE WEEK: Winnipeg Goldeyes’ shortstop Wes Darvill has been named the American Association’s Batter of the Week for August 10 th -16 th . In seven games, Darvill was 12-for-27 (.444) with 11 runs scored, three home runs, and 10 RBI while helping the Goldeyes to a 5-2 record. On Sunday, August 16 th , Darvill was 4-for-5 with four runs scored, a double, a home run, and four RBI.

ROSTER MOVES: The Goldeyes have re-signed right-handed pitcher Dylan Rheault and left-handed pitcher Evan Grills. Rheault made six relief appearances earlier this season, posting a 4.32 ERA with five strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Grills was 0-1 with a 4.73 ERA in one start and five relief appearances. The Goldeyes have also placed right-handed pitcher John Gorman on the Injured List, retroactive to August 7 th , and have released infielder Kevin Lachance. Additionally, left-handed pitcher Kevin McGovern has been placed on the Inactive List, retroactive to August 1 st .

CAPELLAN SETS AMERICAN ASSOCIATION SAVES RECORD: Goldeyes’ relief pitcher Victor Capellan set the American Association career saves record on August 11 th vs. Fargo-Moorhead in the second game of a double header. Capellan pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to preserve a 4- 3 win for his 71 st American Association save, passing the 70 amassed by left-hander Kris Regas (Sioux Falls, Kansas City). Capellan tied Regas with his 70 th save on August 1 st vs. St. Paul, also in the second game of a double header. On July 19 th vs. Sioux Falls, Capellan recorded his 66 th league save to pass right-hander Chris Thompson (Lincoln) for second place on the list. Capellan (along with current Goldeye Kevin McGovern) is one of just seven pitchers in franchise history to pitch five years with the team.

GOLDEYES ADD SEASONED HITTER PIZZANO: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed outfielder Dario Pizzano prior to last Tuesday’s double header. Pizzano hit .286 with one home run and 14 RBI in 30 games earlier this season for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Pizzano joins the Goldeyes with a .371 lifetime on-base percentage and an 11 percent rate. Pizzano has reached Triple-A twice and the Double-A level six times in his career. Fargo-Moorhead selected Pizzano from the Sioux City Explorers in the second round of the American Association Dispersal Draft on June 16 th .

SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENTS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced several adjustments to their remaining schedule on August 10 th . The three-game series against the Milwaukee Milkmen from August 21st -23 rd and September 8 th -10 th will now be played at Franklin Field in Franklin, Wisconsin. The three-game series against the St. Paul Saints from September 4 th -6th will now be played at CHS Field in St. Paul, Minnesota. The nine games were originally scheduled to be played at Newman Outdoor Field. The Goldeyes will still serve as the home team in the nine games.

SWEENEY NAMED BATTER OF THE MONTH: Goldeyes’ centre fielder Darnell Sweeney has been named the American Association Batter of the Month for July. In 25 games, Sweeney hit .330 with 23 runs scored, 11 doubles, seven home runs, 22 RBI, and six stolen bases. Sweeney has also seen action at shortstop and third base this season.

HOME ALONE: The St. Paul Saints were cleared to return to CHS Field on August 4 th , leaving the Winnipeg Goldeyes as the lone 2020 American Association team playing exclusively on the road. The Goldeyes are playing their home games at Newman Outdoor Field, home of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. St. Paul played its first 12 home games at Sioux Falls Stadium, home of the Sioux Falls Canaries.

FILL IT UP: Goldeyes’ pitchers have issued 82 walks in 39 games, which are the fewest in the American Association. The Goldeyes are averaging just 2.2 walks per nine innings.

MCGOVERN CHASING MOORE: Goldeyes’ left-hander Kevin McGovern ranks second on the American Association’s all-time strikeout list (652). Right-hander Ben Moore holds the record with 701.

RED LIGHT: Opposing base stealers have registered just 13 stolen base attempts against Goldeyes’ catchers this season, which is fewest in the American Association. The Goldeyes are averaging just 0.33 stolen base attempts allowed per game. The American Association record is 0.69 attempts allowed per game, set by the 2018 Sioux City Explorers. The 2019 Goldeyes rank second on the list at 0.77 attempts allowed per game.

IN THE BIG INNING: The Goldeyes have had eight innings this season in which the opposition has scored five or more runs, which accounts for 54 of the 176 total runs allowed by the pitching staff. In the remaining 322.0 innings (122 runs allowed), the Goldeyes have averaged just 3.41 runs allowed per game.

DOUBLE UP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes have turned 41 double plays in their first 39 games of the season, which ranks first in the American Association. The Goldeyes set an American Association record in 2019 with a .987 team fielding percentage.

PLAY BALL: The American Association began its 2020 season on July 3 rd . The league was originally scheduled to begin May 19 th , but was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Six teams are scheduled to play 60 regular season games, including the Goldeyes, Chicago Dogs, Fargo- Moorhead RedHawks, Milwaukee Milkmen, St. Paul Saints, and Sioux Falls Canaries. The teams with the best two winning percentages at the conclusion of the regular season will meet in the 2020 American Association Championship Series.

DRAFT DAY: With six American Association clubs inactive for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Pandemic (Cleburne Railroaders, Gary SouthShore RailCats, Kansas City T-Bones, Lincoln Saltdogs, Sioux City Explorers, and Texas AirHogs), the players signed to those rosters were made available in a dispersal draft which took place on June 16 th . A total of 42 players were selected by the six participating teams, including nine by the Goldeyes. Eight of Winnipeg’s nine picks made the Opening Night roster, including IF/OF Darnell Sweeney (Kansas City), RHP Frank Duncan (Kansas City), OF Jordan George (Kansas City), IF Thomas Walraven (Gary SouthShore), C Roy Morales (Kansas City), RHP Kent Hasler (Sioux City), RHP Ryan Flores (Sioux City), and C John Nester (Cleburne). The T-Bones had 17 players drafted off their roster, which was the most from a single team. All drafted players must be returned to their outgoing team at the conclusion of the 2020 season.

ROSTER RULES: As part of the adjusted 2020 American Association season, the league has waived its classification minimums and maximums. Previously, American Association clubs could carry a maximum of five veterans, and 11 total players classified LS-4 or above. Teams were also required to carry at least four (on a 22-man roster) or five (23-man roster) classified rookies. The classification rules are expected to return in 2021. Participating teams were also allowed to carry up to 25 players for the first 10 days of the season (13 of which must be pitchers) before paring down to the standard 23-man roster on July 13 th .

GOLDEYES ENTER 27 th SEASON: The Winnipeg Goldeyes enter their 27 th season in 2020. The franchise brought professional baseball back to the city in 1994. The Goldeyes were 57-43 in 2019, marking the 22 nd time in their first 26 years in which they finished with a winning record. The Goldeyes have reached the postseason 19 times, and have won four championships (Northern League 1994, American Association 2012, 2016, 2017).

ALUMNI REPORT: RHP Brandon Kintzler (2007-08) is currently signed with the Miami Marlins. Kintzler was an American League All-Star in 2017, saving 28 games for the Minnesota Twins. Kintzler has pitched in the Major Leagues every season since 2010. RHP Brandon Marklund signed with the Goldeyes in January of 2019 as a true rookie before having his contract purchased by the . Marklund posted a 0.46 ERA in 39.1 innings last season for the Low-A South Atlantic League’s Lexington Legends. After joining the Goldeyes last June, outfielder Tyler Hill batted .375 for the Goldeyes in 40 games. Hill’s contract was purchased by the Royals on August 8 th . Hill then hit .403 in 21 games for the High-A Carolina League’s Wilmington Blue Rocks, helping the club to a league championship.

Rick Forney on Kevin Hilton: Kevin had a really good season last year. We saw him when he was with the AirHogs, and we didn’t get a ton of great swings off of him. He’s got a ton of movement on his fastball—he’ll sink it and cut it, and he’ll change speeds. He’s a guy that took the ball every fifth day, and was really reliable for six or seven innings every time out.
