Western won the game 6-0 played in Bowling Green in 1910. Football and basketball followed in 1913 and 1914 respectively. World War I and World War II interrupted WKU athletics from 1916-1921 and again from 1943-1945. The first women's athletic event for WKU was a basketball game in 1914. Women's basketball competition was suspended from 1916 to 1920; started again in 1921 and halted from 1932 until it began again in 1974. An overall athletics program for women got its first official push in 1973, with the start of golf and tennis. Western has field athletic teams in 12 different varisty sports over the years: Mens: Baseball 1910-present Basketball 1914-present Cross County 1961-present Football 1913-present Golf 1935-present Riflery 1972-1981 Soccer 1982- Swimming 1970- Tennis 1931-present Track & Field 1915-present Womens: Basketball 1914-present Cross Country 1974-present Golf 1973-present Gymnastics 1973-1981 Riflery 1972-1981 Tennis 1973-present Track & Field 1974-present Volleyball 1981-present Athletic Directors: 1914-1916 - J.L.
