Welcome

Welcome to our Shul. This booklet will help you get acquainted with our customs and the order of prayer that is being used. Before we get down to the details, let's go through some basic principles of prayer.

In What Language? Technically, one can pray in any language one chooses. Being that prayer is the service of the heart, we should understand the prayers that we are reciting. Thus if one does not know how to read Hebrew, one may pray in any language that we understand. However it is preferable to pray in Hebrew, being that it is the holy tongue, and each word of the prayer contains incredible depth of meaning. If you read Hebrew, but do not understand it, then you have several options:

A. Pray in Hebrew, using an English/Hebrew Siddur, following along in the English translation and understanding the prayers that are being said. The High Holiday Siddur is called a Machzor.

B. Pray some prayers in Hebrew and some in English. In our shul some prayers are sung and recited out loud. You can follow along and recite those prayers in Hebrew.

C. Spend some extra time on understanding a few selected prayers at each service. At the next service concentrate on other prayers. In whichever manner you choose to pray, the prayers must be said verbally and audibly, not just read with your mind. Although prayer is called “service of the heart”, it is also an active mitzvah, which is performed by actually reciting the prayers.

In our Shul, we go through the entire order of prayers. We pray at a median pace for our congregants. If you cannot keep up with the pace in Hebrew, focus on the prayers sung out loud.

Common Synagogue Terms: Mechitzah (Divider) Traditional Judaism calls for the separation of the sexes during prayer. This is done to insure a praying experience devoted entirely to one’s communication to God without any distractions. Chazzan (Cantor) The Cantor is a representative of the congregation to sing and chant prayers out loud. The Chazzan will chant all prayers in the traditional Hebrew. You can follow along in the provided prayer books and read the English translation. God understands all languages. The Rabbi will periodically share insights and will recite selected prayers out loud together with the congregation. Machzor (High Holiday Prayer Book) During the High Holidays, special prayers are said which are not recited throughout the year. Therefore, a different prayer book, called a Machzor, is used. Yarmulkah or Kippah (Head Covering) The Yarmulkah is representative of the existence of the Almighty above us. Tallit (Prayer Shawl) The donning of the prayer shawl is a Jewish custom which dates back to the Talmudic era (200 BC – 300 AD). It was originally worn by Jewish scholars and represents wisdom and understanding. The sages instituted its use during prayer services as a sign of respect and reverence. If you cannot stay for the entire service, try to attend the prayers of “more importance”: the Shofar sounding and .

Remember, it's better to recite some prayers with focus and concentration, than all the prayers with no concentration.

Honoraria and Distinction for Rosh Hashana

The following menu is your list of honoraria that will be auctioned off for the High Holy Days, and commentary of the honor that you bought.

Opening of the Ark - Ma’ariv “By A Psalm” This psalm brings the blessing of prosperity because it promises G-d’s blessing to one who serves Him with sincerity. The Talmud tells us that an enormously wealthy man of Ludkia would have this recited before beginning his lavish meal, to express gratitude for the blessing. Therefore, it is recited on the eve of Rosh Hashana when we pray for G-d’s blessing (Sha’arei Beracha). According to the Kabbala and Sephardic tradition, the merit of purchasing the honor of opening the ark for this psalm is a vessel for receiving one’s physical needs for the whole year.

Honoraria for Taking Out and Reading the Torah and the blowing of the Shofar

10 Opening of the Ark and removal of both Sifrei Torah Kabalah reveals that the opening of the ark prior to removal of the Sifrei Torah opens the treasure of blessing from Above to the one who opens the ark. This applies especially to one whose wife is pregnant; this is a remedy for an easy pregnancy.

2) Carrying of the additional Sefer Torah, both days This completes the above-mentioned Mitzvah. As we mentioned previously “Everything goes according to its completion.” So, to a certain extent, all of the above applies double-fold to the one who finishes a Mitzvah.

Reading of the Torah

It is customary to sell the privilege of being called to the Torah on the High Holy Days. Since it is considered meritorious to be called to the Torah on the High Holy Days, one should extend himself to purchase an aliyah if possible. The number of people called to the Torah on Rosh Hashanah are five and on , six. In addition to this we also have the Maftir.

On most festivals the Torah reading is a selection on either the historical narrative of the day or the commandment to observe that Festival. Rosh Hashanah’s reading is neither. It focuses on the theme of the day, which is, acknowledgment of G-d’s Kingship, power, and mercy. Thus on the first day, we read that Abraham and Sarah were remembered with a son. Although the Sages teach that this took place on Rosh Hashanah it is the theme of mercy rather than the anniversary that is paramount. On the second day we read of the Akeidah, one of the great events in our history and an act whose merit is recalled in the Shofar blowing and throughout the liturgy. It, too, re-awakens G-d’s benevolence, and mercy to rain upon us. Each Aliyah purchased has a personal connection and benefit to the person who purchases it. By

expending one’s own money to acquire this Mitzvah, one is elevated with and in the Aliyah (“Elevation”) one has acquired.

1) First Aliyah-Kohen,

First Day “And G-d had remembered Sarah”. The chapter before this concluded with Abraham’s prayer that the women of Abimelech’s court be able to conceive. As soon as he prayed for them, Sarah herself conceived. This teaches that when someone prays on behalf of another when he himself needs that same thing, he is answered first (Rashi). Isaac’s birth caused his parents and relatives to laugh in joy and gratitude (Yitzchak- laughter) (Ramban). Imagine what the Kohen-or person who honors the Kohen-can receive through the purchase of this “Aliyah”.

Second Day This portion, which deals with the sacrifice to comply with G-d’s will, took place on Rosh Hashanah (Pesikta Rabbasi). This sec- tion constitutes the very reason for Israel’s existence in G-d’s eyes. It has therefore become part of our daily prayers (Abarbanel). The word “Nissah” (G-d “tested” Abraham), also can be translated “elevated” or “exalted” like a banner which flies high (Midrash). Imagine the heights one can reach with Abraham together, when purchasing a seat on this flight.

2) Second Aliyah-Levi,

First Day “For your progeny will be called after Isaac”. We finish this por- tion with the ultimate promise of nationhood descendent from Abraham and Isaac. Imagine, you heralding the fact that we are the chosen nation, forever!

Second Day “And they went together”. Although Isaac finally became aware that he was going to be slain, father and son still walked forward with a common purpose, and joy, in expectant fulfillment of Cod’s directive (Rash i). Imagine being apart of, or honoring someone to be apart of, the Mesirat Nefesh that Abraham and lsaac experienced, and being unified in holiness together with them and their service.

3) Third Aliyah,

First Day “There where he is”. Ishmael repented and prayed for mercy (not to die from thirst). The angels argued that he should not be spared because his descendants would murder countless Jews, but Cod responded that a person is judged only in his present state, and since he repented, he would be saved (Rashi). This illustration of the power of repentance is another reason why this chapter is read, for if Ishmael could be spared,

surely the repentance of the Jew should be accepted on this day. Imagine, acquiring the Aliyah, which boils down this whole day in a nutshell, ensuring God’s acceptance of your “Teshuvah”.

Second Day “The Lord will see (“Yireh”)”. Shem, son of Noah, originally called the place “Shalem”. After the “Akeidah” Abraham called it “Yireh”. In deference to Shem and Abraham, God synthesized both names and called it “Yerushalayim” (Midrash). Imagine for a small fee you can be in Yerushalayim and not even pay for a plane ticket and be there with Abraham and Isaac. Shlishi is the first and therefore, most important Aliyah to Israelites.

4) Fourth Aliyah,

First Day “Then Abraham remonstrated with Avimelech” Although Abraham eagerly accepted peace, he carried out his moral obli- gation against injustice that the king permitted in his country. If ones Aliyah affects the person being elevated (receiving the honor), then one can acquire the attribute most desired the pride and grandeur of a Jew.

Second Day “As numerous as the stars in heaven and as the sand on the seashore.” This is the greatest blessing Israel receives from God. There are many meanings; suffice it to say that you

personally can reach for the stars while remaining planted firmly on the ground.

5) Fifth Aliyah,

First Day “And he (Abraham) planted a tree (“eshel”). The ultimate intention was to provide hospitality. Rav understands it to mean an “orchard” to provide food for wayfarers. Shmuel interprets it as an “inn” (Talmud Sotah). One who acquires this Aliyah will be blessed with wealth to fulfill the Mitzvah of hospitality similarly to Abraham who had great wealth to fulfill this Mitzvah.

Second Day The birth of Rebecca is announced to Abraham and Isaac. Rebecca is the one who is credited by our Sages (with her hus- band) for the existence of the Jewish nation, and the fact that it was given the Torah. No doubt in her merit one who purchases this Aliyah will realize “children and grandchildren engaging in Torah and Mitzvot.”

6) Maftir,

First Day The Haftorah tells the story of Chanah: her self-sacrifice and her reward. She was blessed with a child who became a prophet second only to Moshe, the prophet Samuel. He later

anointed kings. Imagine the blessings one can get in the merit of acquiring this Haftora.

Second Day In this Haftora we read the moving passage of Rachel weeping for her children, which leads to the ultimate promise of final redemption and freedom. There is no doubt that in the merit for buying this Aiiyah one will live to see the coming of Moshiach.

7) Raising of Torah

Both Days When raising the Torah one raises with it all the previous AIyot and receives reward for all the previous ahyot (Shulchan Aruch).

8) Wrapping of Torah,

Both Days “Hakol holech achar Hachitum” Everything goes according to the end (the finisher). Just like above, you receive reward for all the previous AIyot. Children may be honored with this Honoraria.

One who buys a Torah to hold during Shofar blowing is part of and included as an emissary for the congregation. There are also many mystical hints and elevations heaped upon such a person who buys the merit to hold a Torah during this time.

Rosh Hashanah First Day – October 3, 2016 (Part 2)

EXPLANATION TO THE MUSAF AMIDAH The highlight prayer of the Rosh Hashanah service, the Musaf prayer, begins with the standard opening three blessings of Praise to Hashem and concludes with the standard three blessings of thanks with minor modifications. The middle section though is comprised of three parts. Each segment is made up of ten verses relating to the particular theme culled from Torah - Scripture, the Neviim – Prophets, and Ksuvim – Biblical Scripture. These three themes are all integral to the message of Rosh Hashanah: 1. An introduction and blessing on the theme of Malchiyos - Hashem's Kingship, that we accept Hashem's sovereignty and KINGSHIP to aspire to His purpose in His Creation. and; 2. An introduction and blessing on the theme of Zichronos - Hashem's Remembrance and awareness of every individual, on this day of Judgment that every aspect of our lives is scrutinized and REMEMBERED and; 3. An introduction and blessing on the theme of Shofaros – the sounding the Shofar, the call to self- reflection and repentance on this day and attain this awareness through the SHOFAR Accordingly, the Shofar is sounded at the end of each of the middle blessings underscoring the connection of them all with the Shofar.
