Monstruosidad Y Aesthet(H)Ical Encounters En La Producción Latinoamericana
Monstruosidad y Aesthet(h)ical Encounters en la Producción Latinoamericana Contemporánea. Tres posibilidades de aproximación: Perú, Brasil y México. by Roberto de Jesus Ortiz Manzanilla A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved August 2019 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: David William Foster, Chair Cynthia Tompkins Ligia Bezerra ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY December 2019 ©2019 Roberto de Jesús Ortiz Manzanilla All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT This study addresses aspects of monstrosity from a transdisciplinary and comprehensive perspective that combines postcolonial, postmodern, queer, and overall, postfeminist studies in a realm of Latin American Cultural Production. This combination of theoretical frameworks allows for the application of the possibilities of resistance to the time and space in which the protagonists interact within the following selection of works that are analyzed in this dissertation: the films La teta asustada (2009) by Claudia Llosa, and the debut film of Rosario García Montero Las malas intenciones (2011); similarly, the collection of short stories Falo de mulher (2002) as well as the short story entitled "Mãe o cacete" (2004) de Ivanna Arruda Leite; and finally, a study of the X’tabay legend originating from the Southeast of Mexico alongside the discursive analysis of the coverage of femicides as depicted by the Yucatan press. Amidst other topics that will be analyzed in this study are the possibility of considering monstrosity as an aesthet(h)ical encounter which combines, as its name indicates, poetics, aesthetics, politics, and ethics. These aspects are considered in order to inspect the subjects/characters that find themselves resisting in regard to access to subjectivity and in contrast to, that which is called, the time and space of the monster. -
