Our focus is on the relationships between people and the environment: how societies shape and are shaped by the environment, how societies manage and use natural resources, and how people impact on the environment. SRES draws on both the natural and social sciences to address the challenges of sustainability. This Yearbook introduces our staff and graduate students, their work over the past year, and overviews the School’s teaching programs. Our staff, students and graduates work together in undergraduate and graduate coursework programs that record high levels of satisfaction and employment, and in world-leading research, to help governments, businesses, communities and individuals meet the many challenges of working towards sustainability. The School’s activities in teaching and learning are organised around five undergraduate Program areas - Forestry, Geography, Human Ecology, Resource and Environmental Management, and Sustainability - and in related graduate coursework and research degree programs. At the undergraduate level, SRES offers BA, BSc, B Interdisciplinary Studies (Sustainability), BSc(Forestry), BSc(Resource and Environmental Management) and associated joint degrees. At the graduate level, SRES offers programs leading to Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Masters and PhD degrees. These are summarised on page 4 of this Yearbook and detailed in our Undergraduate and Graduate Program Handbooks, available both on our website sres.anu.edu.au and in hard copy from the SRES office. The research work of SRES staff and students is diverse and wide-ranging, but united by its focus on addressing the challenges of sustainability. Most of our research is conducted in partnership with national and State agencies, businesses, communities and landowners, ensuring its relevance and maximising the benefits of research outcomes. Within the ANU, SRES works closely with partner Schools, Centres, Departments and Institutes across the ANU to achieve synergies and efficiencies. SRES also continued to house the ANU National Institute for Environment, and to work closely with CRES and other members of the ANU NIE Board, to progress the Institute’s agenda. SRES celebrated its fifth birthday in July 2006. During our fifth year, our staff maintained their high international and national profiles and productivity, publishing 4 books, 24 book chapters, 35 journal papers, and 42 conference papers. Our teaching and learning programs continued to evolve, and to be recognised for their quality and innovation. SRES staff and students attracted more than $1.9 million in new external grants to support their research. Some 38 graduate students, 17 Honours, and 50 SRES-based undergraduates completed their degrees. In alignment with Virginia’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% in 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and University of Virginia have set emission reduction goals as well. Electric vehicle (EV) use is part of these plans to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change in the Charlottesville Albemarle area. While electric vehicles include hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles, this study will focus on battery electric vehicles because they are the most reliant on charging infrastructure.

    TRANSPORTATION Transportation Toolkit Definitions Alternative Fuels: The following fuels are defined as rarely used as a transportation fuel. Life cycle analysis found alternative fuels by the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992: that B100 use reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 74% pure methanol, ethanol, and other alcohols; blends of 85% compared with petroleum diesel. To qualify as a green vehicle or more of alcohol with gasoline; natural gas and liquid fuels under this metric, biodiesel must be used with B20 or higher domestically produced from natural gas; propane; coal-derived biofuel or with locally produced, low-level (e.g. B5) biofuel for liquid fuels; hydrogen; electricity; pure biodiesel (B100); fuels, more than 4 months of the year.     BRIEFING © 2021 INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL ON CLEAN TRANSPORTATION MARCH 2021 The role of the European Union’s vehicle CO2 standards in achieving the European Green Deal Prepared by Claire Buysse, Joshua Miller, Sonsoles Díaz, Arijit Sen, Caleb Braun BACKGROUND In December 2019, the European Commission put forth the European Green Deal, a sustainable growth strategy that aims to transform the economy of the European Union (EU) while tackling climate change and other environmental challenges.1 As part of this strategy, in March 2020, the Commission proposed a European Climate Law that would create a legally binding target of climate neutrality by 2050.2 To achieve this 2050 target, the Commission proposed strengthening the current 2030 greenhouse gas reduction target from at least 40% to at least 55% compared to 1990 levels. This target was endorsed by the European Council in December 2020;3 the European Parliament has yet to debate this target but had previously called for a more ambitious target of at least 60%.4 The transport sector is presently responsible for one-third of total CO2 emissions and one-quarter of total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, excluding indirect emissions from fuel production and vehicle manufacturing. The Green Deal targets a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050.     Official Publication of Clean Cities and the Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center Vol. 13, No. 1 - February 2009 Clean Cities Now (www.eere.energy.gov/cleancities/ccn) is the official publication ofClean Cities, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy designed to reduce petroleum consumption in the transportation sector by advancing the use of alternative fuel vehicles, idle reduction technologies, hybrid electric vehicles, fuel blends, and fuel economy. I-65 is Nation’s First Biofuels Corridor Interstate 65, extending 886 miles between Gary, Indiana, and Mobile, Alabama, is the nation’s first “biofuels corridor.” In 2005, there were no biofuel stations along I-65. Today the corridor designation means that a driver is no more than 100 miles from a participating E85 retailer. The $1.3 million federal project funded 31 E85 and five B20 stations and one biodiesel blending facility located on the Indiana-Ohio border. Matching funds for construction and conversion were provided by individual infrastructure owners. E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline for use in flexible fuel vehicles, and B20, a blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum-based diesel for use in diesel vehicles, are fuels made with renewable agricultural products. The corridor, which spans four states, was completed thanks to the Indiana Office of Energy and Defense Development (IOEDD), which worked with Carl Lisek of Indiana’s South Shore Clean Cities, Kellie Walsh of Central Indiana Clean Cities, Melissa Howell of the Common- wealth Clean Cities Partnership (CCCP) in Kentucky, and Mark Bentley of the Alabama Clean Fuels Coalition (ACFC).

Over the last 10 years, this initiative has advanced Seattle’s national leadership in green fleet efforts and we now have one of the largest fleets of alternative fuel vehicles in the nation. In 2010, 100 Best Fleets awarded the top honor of #1 Green Fleet in North America to the Department of Finance and Administrative Services’ (FAS) Fleet Management Division (FMD). This celebrated accomplishment is a testament to what we can achieve with dedicated resources and committed leadership. The updated 2014 Green Fleet Action Plan (GFAP) renews our commitment to this essential initiative and lays the ground work to continue achieving tangible results in advancing our green fleet agenda. With an annual fuel budget of more than $8 million, a successful plan that reduces fuel consumption will provide financial and environmental benefits to the City. These efforts also contribute to the development of low‐carbon fuel markets while demonstrating effective community leadership on a regional and national scale. The 2014 GFAP is a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction plan for the City’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.

Rain washes these pollutants off a street or driveway, into a road ditch, down a storm drain, and directly into our streams and rivers.
