A wife, mother of five and grandmother to ten, she had an amazing ability to provide encouragement and was considered to be “the glue that held her family together.” In 1963, only one year after the Evansville Museum Guild was formed, Shirley Wright suggested that the volunteer association organize an art exhibition of the work of local high school students. The High School Art Show has made an important impact on the lives of literally thousands of young artists enrolled in public, private, and parochial high schools in Southwestern Indiana. In recognition of Shirley Wright’s myriad gifts and the tremendous legacy she has provided with the establishment of this annual art competition, we are deeply honored to dedicate this exhibition to her memory. JUROR’S STATEMENT It was my privilege and my responsibility to jury hundreds of creative works of 9th through 12th grade students from public, private and parochial schools in Vanderburgh, Warrick, Pike, Posey and Gibson counties that were entered in the 2020 High School Art Show. This highly anticipated annual exhibit, now in its 57th year, provides area students the opportunity to display their artwork in a prominent professional venue, the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Science. It also showcases the impressive strength and range of high school visual arts programs in southwestern Indiana. The amount of work entered, its high quality, and the wide variety of media and techniques employed were all remarkable. There were charcoal, graphite, ink and colored pencil drawings; acrylic, watercolor and digital paintings; linoleum, silkscreen, and collagraph prints; mixed media collages; photographs; batik; weaving and graphic design works. There were sculptures made of cardboard, wood, clay, steel, wire, paper, and several media combined; both functional and sculptural ceramic works; and silver, copper, and mixed media jewelry pieces. In many of these categories there were numerous noteworthy works. This, along with having to reduce the 700 plus works entered to the approximately 130 requested by museum staff for the exhibit made my job extremely difficult. My jurying objective was to choose a show that embodied the breadth of creativity, skills, concepts, media and techniques of the entries as fully as possible. Many times that meant selecting only one, what I considered the best example, of a creative project or medium, although many entered were very well done. In each artwork, I saw passion, promise and creative exploration. I applaud all of the student artists who entered the show. It is really brave to put one’s artwork “out there” to be judged. To those of you whose work was selected, I send my congratulations on your outstanding creations. To the award-winners, bravo! Your artworks are truly exceptional. To the art teachers who direct these young artists daily with expertise and patience, thank you for your dedication and hard work. And, finally, to the high schools and communities represented in this exhibit, sincere gratitude for your support of visual art, and the hope that you will continue to sustain and expand these important art programs. Overall, as a teacher and artist myself, and as I have felt in the many times I have viewed the High School Art Show in past years, I am just awed by the creativity and skills of the young artists of southwestern Indiana. I urge all of you to persevere in your artistic pursuits; our country needs your creative thinking to solve the many challenges we face.
