If you don’t know the answer, then you probably haven’t seen comedian Charlie Murphy’s “True Hollywood Stories” sketch from Comedy Central’s short-lived, but much-loved and critically acclaimed series, Chappelle’s Show. The infamous sketch, which first aired in 2004, satirizes Murphy’s early-’80s interactions with the King of Punk Funk, Rick James. Best known for his hits “Superfreak,” “Give it to Me,” “Baby” and “Cold Blooded,” James provides commentary to a series of reenacted flashbacks in which he’s portrayed by Dave Chappelle. According to Murphy, James was a “straight player” and “habitual line-stepper” with “mad pimping skills.” In the skit, James is depicted as a hard-partying instigator who doesn’t give a second thought to sucker-punching Murphy or grinding his grimy boots into a suede couch owned by the comedian’s superstar sibling, Eddie. And now, a decade after James reentered the public consciousness — and, unfortunately, a decade after his passing — San Diego’s The Shout!     MYNAH BIRDS By Nick Warburton Ambitious, charismatic and dripping in raw talent, Ricky James Matthews (b. James Ambrose Johnson, 1 February 1948, Buffalo, NY, US; d. 6 August 2004) didn’t take long to capitalise on his sharp looks, soulful voice and US navy uniform after he landed in Toronto in August 1964. Within weeks of his arrival, the young singer found himself fronting the aptly titled Sailorboys, a raucous R&B outfit that subsequently evolved into the Mynah Birds. Unbeknown to his musical cohorts, however, Matthews was a wanted man by the US authorities. His failure to report for active duty with the USS Enterprise and a fear of arrest had prompted the young singer to flee across the border. Interestingly, it was not Matthews’ first brush with the authorities, for as a teenager he had been arrested on several occasions for stealing cars. Indeed, throughout his career Matthews would have numerous run-ins with the law, culminating in a prison sentence in the mid- 1990s. While Matthews later enjoyed a string of hits for Motown Records in the late 1970s/early 1980s as funk star Rick James, little is known about his early life, particularly his involvement in the Toronto rock scene during the 1960s. And perhaps it would have remained that way had it not been for the fact that the Mynah Birds also briefly included Canadian rock legend, Neil Young (b. 12 November 1945, Toronto, Canada). Even so, it would be a gross oversight to view the group as merely a footnote to Rick James and Neil Young’s careers.

Speech Topics Nick St.Nicholas Entertainment Nick St.Nicholas' music career began in Toronto when he first formed a band Celebrity called the Mynah Birds, a group of unknowns that would begin the careers of the king of funk, Rick James, and Neil Young of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.     The Blues/Funk Futurism of Roger Troutman 119 The Blues/Funk Futurism of Roger Troutman Scot Brown More than a decade after his tragic death, the sonic innovations of Roger Troutman—known simply as Roger and leader of the group called Zapp— continue to influence pop music. Contemporary artists such as Kanye, Akon, and T-Pain owe a tremendous debt to Roger’s brand of electronic funk. Though reigning supreme during the 1980s, his sound built on the commingling of technology and futuristic representations in film and television decades earlier. Beyond television and movie screens, African American musical artists cre- ated accessible avenues for futuristic representation through musical art. Lyr- ics, concepts, costumes, and album cover art, from a range of musical styles, evoked futuristic imagery set in outer space or imaginary places to frame com- mentaries on love, human possibility, politics, and racial conflict. Musical il- lustrations of the future were often textured by new technologies of sound used in scores for postwar science fiction film and television. Tonal companions to the American Aquarian age were wrought with technological enthusiasm and anxieties—most notably expressed in numerous guitar effects (popularized by Jimi Hendrix) and the synthesizer, which, in keeping with its namesake, created analogues to traditional sounds and synthesized altogether new ones.
