GIVING TO HERITAGE, BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY

Singapore, 27 April 2012 – Singaporeans can now enjoy new exhibits at the national museums, more exciting outreach activities island-wide, and a more vibrant and engaging museum and heritage scene – all thanks to heritage philanthropists who gave generously to the heritage cause in 2011.

2 48 of these cultural benefactors were recognised for their generous contributions in the Patron of Heritage Awards 2011 – the National Heritage Board (NHB)‟s annual accolade which pays tribute to cultural philanthropists for their gifts to heritage. In its sixth year, the awards ceremony on 27 April 2011 at the National Museum of celebrated more than S$9.2 million worth of cash sponsorships and in-kind donations to various heritage causes. The S$9.2 million contributed is a combination of S$3.8 million of cash sponsorships, in-kind donations totaling S$4.3 million, and S$1.1 million worth of artefact donations.

3 These contributions enabled NHB to strengthen its museum offerings, outreach programmes and community engagement efforts, further equipping Singaporeans with more quality touchpoints to experience the Singapore story and our shared history and heritage.

Heritage for the Community

4 Much of the donations received last year were invested in exhibitions, festivals and programmes that benefitted the community at large. The Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, with its strong record of philanthropic support for the arts and heritage, gave to the very successful Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor and His Legacy at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM). The exhibition drew an impressive 170,000 visitors, making it NHB‟s most well-received show to date. The Society of Chinese Artists, the oldest art society in Singapore, saw its members donating 51 of their own masterpieces, which can be enjoyed when The National Art Gallery, Singapore opens its doors in 2015.

5 With HSBC‟s support, the National Museum of Singapore presented Dreams and Reality: Masterpieces of Painting, Drawing and Photography from Musée d’Orsay, Paris. The donation allowed the National Museum to conduct special tours for underprivileged children of the School Pocket Money Fund. Similarly, Boustead Singapore Limited‟s cash donation brought contemporary art out to the less privileged, including the disabled, elderly, former prisoners and underprivileged children.

6 Popular arts and heritage outreach events, and Singapore HeritageFest, were also fortunate recipients in 2011. The Singapore Biennale 2011 saw contributions from corporations such as The Fullerton Heritage, Grid Communications, JPL Consultants, King & King Wong and Moove Media. These ranged from advertising space to communications support, safety checks and even furniture and hospitality services for the inaugural Hotel. Singapore HeritageFest 2011, which attracted more than 1.2 million Singaporeans, was once again a resounding success – the result of contributions from companies such as OnePeople.sg and Singapore Press Holdings.

7 In addition, the generous support by Harilela Hotels (Singapore) to the will fund the construction of the new heritage institution as well as its outreach programmes, equipping Singaporeans with a better understanding of the diverse history and heritage of the Indian community in Singapore. Championing the Heritage Cause

8 As with previous years, the Patron of Heritage Awards 2011 witnessed a healthy number of new donors. Over 58% in 2011 gave for the very first time. One such individual is Mr Toh Soon Huat, whose donation of exquisite Thai Buddhist sculptures significantly strengthens the collection at the ACM. The also received more than 70 exquisite batik altar cloths contributed by Mr Matthew Yapp and Mrs Alice Yapp, which reflects the diverse roots of the rich Peranakan culture. Another new supporter is Mr Yutaka Asamura, an avid stamp collector from Japan, who donated a notable philatelic collection to the Singapore Philatelic Museum, as his tribute back to Singapore and the local philatelic community.

9 Corporations who made their mark in cultural philanthropy for the first time included advertising specialist JCDecaux Singapore Pte Ltd. One of the biggest givers last year, the company sponsored media spaces at Changi Airport, which provided invaluable publicity for our museums amongst locals and visitors to our shores.

10 Many new donors grow to become our loyal patrons, demonstrating continued support through the years. Individuals such as Mdm Yeo Yang Kwee, donated for the second year, her late husband, Singapore artist Chua Ek Kay‟s, paintings. The ACM and the Peranakan Museum are also very grateful for the unwavering support of individuals such as Ms Agnes Tan Kim Lwi and Mr and Mrs Lee Kip Lee, who once again donated their prized collections.

11 Corporations who are long-term supporters include the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation, who committed to five editions of the Signature Art Prize series. The Foundation doubled its sponsorship for the Signature Art Prize series in 2011, enabling it to reach out to more countries across the Asia Pacific region. Credit Suisse AG is another with The Credit Suisse: Innovation In Art Series which began in 2007. These patrons, both existing and new, are Singapore‟s heritage champions, serving as shining examples of the community‟s passion and commitment to heritage.

For Singapore, By Singaporeans

12 Singaporeans also gave selflessly to the heritage cause in 2011. Half of the awardees for 2011 are Singapore organisations. Of these, we have corporations such as MediaCorp Pte Ltd, Singapore Post Limited, StarHub Cable Vision and Toast Box by Breadtalk, which gave to various causes ranging from popular festivals such as the Singapore HeritageFest, to publications.

13 Said Mr Michael Koh, Chief Executive Officer, NHB: “We would like to thank our donors for their big-heartedness in giving back to Singapore‟s heritage and their dedication to the community. Without their steadfast support, we would not have been able to embark on the many successful exhibitions and programmes, which have served as integral channels to reach out to the community, allowing us to share the Singapore story.”

25) THE ST. REGIS SINGAPORE The theme of the Monumental Ball – Lady Astor‟s Party, was one that is associated strongly with the St. Regis brand and the eminent Astor family back in the early 1900s. In supporting the inaugural Preservation of Monuments Board‟s (PMB) Monumental Ball in 2011, The St. Regis Singapore contributed delectable cuisine and beverage served during the gala at John Jacob Ballroom, without which the event would not have been such a success. The fundraiser will help to deliver quality programmes and exhibitions to educate future generations of the monumental significance of national monuments, landmarks of our nation‟s built heritage.

26) TIME SINGAPORE PTE LTD In 2011, TIME magazine supported two of the National Museum‟s special exhibitions, Abbas: 45 years in Photography and Dreams and Reality: Masterpieces of Painting, Drawing and Photography from Musée d’Orsay, Paris. 27) TOAST BOX BY BREADTALK With their generous in-kind support to the Singapore Art Museum, Toast Box designed and built a temporary café in the Old Kallang Airport venue for the Singapore Biennale 2011. 28) TOH SOON HUAT (MR) Thai Buddhist Sculptures These elaborate bronze figures of Buddha and the fat monk known as Phra Sangkachai significantly strengthen the Asian Civilisations Museum‟s collection of Thai sculpture. Buddha sits in meditation, dressed in finely decorated robes, whilst Phra Sangkachai sits contentedly with a serene smile. Sangkachai was revered for his clear teachings of the Buddhist dharma. His beauty brought unwanted attention from women as well as men; angels mistakenly worshipped him as the Buddha. In order to avoid such inappropriate attention, he allowed himself to become extremely overweight and unattractive.

Besides giving our younger audiences an insight on the entertainment and leisure avenues of the past, the specially-themed exhibition and exciting programming of cultural and ethnic performances gave the older generation an opportunity to rediscover their past and at the same time share their memories with the younger generation, thus fostering inter-generational bonding through an appreciation of local heritage. The support of Velocity@Novena Square allowed the Singapore HeritageFest to tap into a new audience, with very positive results.

30) WEARNES AUTOMOTIVE PTE LTD (VOLVO) Wearnes Automotive loaned Volvo cars to the Singapore Art Museum for Parking Mad (Le parking en volie) by Benedetto Bufalino for Night Lights 2011.
