Phylogeny of the Mayfly Family Leptohyphidae (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) in South America

Lillo 205, San Miguel de Tucuma´n, 4000 Tucuma´n, Argentina Abstract. A cladistic analysis of the South American members of the Ephemer- opteran family Leptohyphidae is presented. A matrix of 73 taxa and 124 morphological characters was analysed under two distinct weighting criteria (implied weighting, which weights characters as a whole, and self-weighted optimization, which differentially weights character state transformations). To assess the monophyly of the Leptohyphidae, representatives of Ephemerellidae, Ephemerythidae, Machadorythidae, Teloganodidae, Tricorythidae, Coryphoridae and Melanemerellidae were also included. Trees were rooted in Ephemerellidae. Conspicuous differences in consensus topology occur when transformation costs among character states are weighted (including asymmetries). The differences in the assessments of character reliability in the two weighting criteria used are discussed. In many cases, self-weighting, in allowing for asymmetries in trans- formation costs, considered many of the character state transformations as more reliable (¼ informative) than implied weights (which needlessly down-weighted the whole character). The results confirm the monophyly of Leptohyphidae and support its sister-group relationship with Coryphoridae. The shortest trees do not support the recently proposed division of Leptohyphidae into two subfamilies. Ephemerelloidea higher classification is discussed briefly. It is the only known genus in the family Leptohyphidae that shows divided eyes in the male. In the present paper the genus and species are redescribed, based on new material from all the life stages. The eggs and female adults are described for the first time. Also male imagines of Tricorythodes ocellus Allen & Roback are described for the first time, showing markedly plesiomorphic genitalia. Leptohyphodes shows close affinities with the genera Tricorythodes and Haplohyphes. Resumen Leptohyphodes Ulmer es un ge´nero monotı´pico poco conocido del NE de Brasil (Serra do Mar). Es el u´ nico ge´nero conocido en la familia Leptohyphidae que presenta ojos divididos en el macho. En el presente trabajo se redescribe el ge´nero y la especie sobre la base de material nuevo de todos los estadı´os del ciclo de vida. Los huevos y hembras adultas son descriptos por primera vez. Tambie´n se describe por primera vez a los imagos machos de Tricorythodes ocellus Allen & Roback, que muestran genitales masculinos notoriamente plesiomo´rficos. The influence of some local abiotic factors on the most common genera was also analyzed. Methods: Samplings were conducted at 40 sites in 1st-4th order streams, along a short elevation gradient (70-500 m), with a Surber sampler. Water physico-chemical factors, as well as substrate type, were obtained at each site. Results: At all, 5,320 specimens were collected, belonging to 18 families and 52 genera. -

The Upper Paraná River floodplain is one of the few places where are found remained areas in which such peculiar characteristics keep reflecting on its high biodiversity. Ephemeroptera nymphs are one of the higher density groups among benthic community, occurring in many water bodies like large rivers and secondary channels. We sought to understand which factors are needed for the species establishment and how much important is the species colonization, especially in environments with anthropogenic changes. The marginal areas, which are more structured with presence of macrophytes, showed the highest density and richness even in the Paraná River that has great human impact. We verified dominance of Americabaetis alphus, Tricorythopsis araponga, Tricorythopsis artigas on the Parana River, correlated with transparency, depth and electric conductivity, while the dominance of Traverella sp.
