For lasting memories, visit the Verde Valley – recently named one of the Top 10 U.S. travel destinations by Lonely Planet. Located in the 'heart' of Arizona, the Verde Valley is ideally situated above the heat of the desert and below the cold of Arizona’s high country. Surrounded by the red rocks of Sedona to the northeast and to the southwest, its low elevation of 3,300’ and moderate climate are enjoyed year-round. Ancient civilizations, with their unique history and cultures are also here to explore. State parks, historic sites and enticing attractions offer activities for all ages. The Verde River provides opportunities for float trips, along with wonderful habitat for one of the Southwest’s largest concentrations of resident and migratory birdlife. There is an assortment of hotels, bed & breakfasts, RV Parks, campgrounds and restaurants to choose from. Plan to stay a few days; you will need them to see all there is throughout the Verde Valley.

The small towns of the Verde Valley showcase the best of Arizona's quaint communities. All are within a 30 mile radius with an estimated population of 60,000 - each offering visitors a unique experience. In the shadows of Mingus Mountain and in the heart of the Verde Valley, Cottonwood offers a distinctive historic district lined with shops and restaurants on its Main Street. History is alive in nearby Clarkdale, whose homes and buildings still reflect its early copper smelting heritage. Four specialized museums focus on Native American cultures, international copper art, and local railroad and town history. Cornville/Page Springs offers wineries, tasting rooms and a relaxed take on some of Arizona’s most pristine high-desert scenery. Camp Verde, located n Cornville/Page Springs in the geographic center of Arizona, is rich in history and offers a

variety of recreation n Jerome and outdoor activities to experience and e njoy. A Verde Valley excursion wouldn't be complete without a journey up the hill to Jerome, the “City in the Sky.” Once a thriving mining camp of 15,000, Jerome acquired “ghost town” status by the 1960s. Today, entrepreneurs have restored many of the quaint buildings that cling to the mountainside and the town now dishes out artsy boutiques and panoramic views in equal measure. Speaking of views, Sedona’s stark, giant, red rock formations are so compelling, they cause grown men to take up painting or poetry. Toss in dozens of superb shops, galleries, restaurants and recreational opportunities, and Sedona has found a magical elixir.

The Verde River, one of Arizona’s last free-flowing rivers, sustains a large regional wildlife population as it flows through 36 miles of lush riparian habitat in the Verde Valley. This stretch of river is known as the Verde River Greenway. The 3,300 foot elevation means mild temperatures for hiking along the Verde, canoeing, bird watching, picnicking, fishing, or just wading in the cool water. Life along the river changes with each season, giving visitors a glimpse of great blue heron, black-hawks, ducks, coyotes, raccoons, mule deer, beavers, frogs, turtles, snakes and toads. The Verde River and surrounding riparian corridor support nearly twenty threatened or endangered species including river otter, southwestern bald eagles, southwestern willow flycatchers, and lowland leopard frogs. The most significant natural resource in the Greenway, besides the year-round flowing river, is the dense forest of riparian trees and shrubs along its riverbank. This Fremont Cottonwood & Gooding Willow Riparian Gallery Forest is one of five remaining stands in Arizona and one of 20 such stands in the world. Recently created public river access points are available in several locations along the Verde River. For detailed information and maps, visit verderivergreenway.org. Use your personal equipment or take a guided tour. For guided options, see our Attractions section.

Cottonwood & Verde Valley • 5 Birding and Wildlife watching in the Verde River Valley is educational and fun. A diversity of habitat attracts nesting birds and many migratory species that find this a great place to rest on their seasonal journeys. Spring is the best time to bird, but one can find interesting sightings any time of the year. The best sites are around water. Our canyons, grasslands and elevation changes provide dynamic variations in what can be seen. Find a path meandering along the riverbank or up a canyon and you’ll spot birds. verdebirdingtrail.com
