Imagination in Thought and Action Imagination in Thought and Action Anna Ichino Thesis submitted to the University of Milan for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2015 1 2 Abstract In this thesis I ask what the role of imagination is in our representation of the world and interactions with it. A standard answer to this question is that imagination has no direct role: imagination’s proper function is rather to allow us to disengage from reality; its motivating power, if it has any, is basically limited to children’s pretence. I argue that this standard answer is mistaken: imagination’s role is much larger than that. I consider a number of cases – including cases of superstitious and religious actions, or so-called ‘expressive behaviours’ – where we are moved to act by representational states that are not sensitive to real-world evidence, nor integrated in our whole system of beliefs. I argue that at least some degree of sensitivity to evidence and inferential integration are necessary for a state to count as belief; hence the representational states that play the relevant motivating role in the cases I consider cannot be beliefs. I suggest that imagination is the best alternative candidate. This supports an account of imagination according to which its functional profile is the same of belief with respect to emotional and behavioural outputs, while it critically differs from belief with respect to cognitive inputs (and related normative constraints). Imaginings dispose us to act and react in the same ways in which belief do; but they are not (nor ought be) formed and maintained in response to real-world evidence as beliefs are (and ought to be). On this view, many cognitions that are standardly classified as beliefs – like superstitious, ideological and religious ‘beliefs’ – turn out to be better understood as imaginings. Imagination does not just allow us to ‘escape’ from reality into fictional worlds, but plays a key, direct role in our representation of (and practical engagement with) reality. 3 4 This thesis is dedicated to my parents, who taught me to walk in the realm of imagination. 5 6 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without support and encouragements from many people, to whom goes my deepest gratitude.     The Three Phases of Arendt's Theory of Totalitarianism* X~1ANNAH Arendt's The Origins of Totalitarianism, first published in 1951, is a bewilderingly wide-ranging work, a book about much more than just totalitarianism and its immediate origins.' In fact, it is not really about those immediate origins at all. The book's peculiar organization creates a certain ambiguity regarding its intended subject-matter and scope.^ The first part, "Anti- semitism," tells the story of tbe rise of modern, secular anti-Semi- tism (as distinct from what the author calls "religious Jew-hatred") up to the turn of the twentieth century, and ends with the Drey- fus affair in Erance—a "dress rehearsal," in Arendt's words, for things still worse to come (10). The second part, "Imperialism," surveys an assortment of pathologies in the world politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, leading to (but not direcdy involving) the Eirst World War. This part of the book examines the European powers' rapacious expansionist policies in Africa and Asia—in which overseas investment became the pre- text for raw, openly racist exploitation—and the concomitant emergence in Central and Eastern Europe of "tribalist" ethnic movements whose (failed) ambition was the replication of those *Earlier versions of this essay were presented at the University of Virginia and at the conference commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of The Origins of Toudilarianism hosted by the Hannah Arendt-Zentrum at Carl Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Ger- many.     Imagination: A Critical Skill for Learning Scott Barry Kaufman In recent years, schools have become increasingly focused on developing “executive functions” in students. These functions—which include the ability to concentrate, ignore distractions, regulate emotions, and integrate complex information in working memory—are certainly important contributors to learning. However, I believe that in our school’s excitement over executive functions, we’ve missed out on the why of education. Another class of functions have been recently discovered by cognitive neuroscientists that-- when combined with executive functioning—contribute to deep, personally meaningful learning, long-term retention, compassion, and creativity. Dubbed the “default mode network” by cognitive scientists, the following imagination-related functions have been associated with this network: daydreaming, imagining and planning the future, retrieving deeply personal memories, making meaning out of experiences, monitoring one’s emotional state, reading fiction, reflective compassion, and perspective taking. This is an important set of skills to fall by the wayside among our students! In fact, by constantly demanding the executive attention of students for the purposes of abstract learning, we are actively robbing students of the opportunity to use the limited resource of attention for the purposes of personal reflection, meaning-making, and compassionate perspective taking. Let’s be clear: both executive functions and imagination-related cognitive processes are critical to learning. However, when these networks couple together, we can get the best learning outcomes out of students. People who live a meaningful life of creativity and accomplishment combine dreaming with doing. A common thread that runs through both grit and imagination is trial-and-error: the ability to dream, to set concrete goals, to construct various strategies to reach the goal, to tinker with alternative approaches to reaching the goal, and to constantly revise approaches where necessary.

    Lexical Semantic Analysis in Natural Language Text Nathan Schneider Language Technologies Institute School of Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University ◇ July 28, 2014 Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of doctor of philosophy in language and information technologies Abstract Computer programs that make inferences about natural language are easily fooled by the often haphazard relationship between words and their meanings. This thesis develops Lexical Semantic Analysis (LxSA), a general-purpose framework for describing word groupings and meanings in context. LxSA marries comprehensive linguistic annotation of corpora with engineering of statistical natural lan- guage processing tools. The framework does not require any lexical resource or syntactic parser, so it will be relatively simple to adapt to new languages and domains. The contributions of this thesis are: a formal representation of lexical segments and coarse semantic classes; a well-tested linguistic annotation scheme with detailed guidelines for identifying multi- word expressions and categorizing nouns, verbs, and prepositions; an English web corpus annotated with this scheme; and an open source NLP system that automates the analysis by statistical se- quence tagging. How do perceptual imagination and memory resemble and differ from each other and from other kinds of sensory experience? And what role does each play in perception and in the acquisition of knowledge? These are the two central questions that the essays in this volume seek to address. One important fact about our mental lives is that sensory experience comes in (at least) three central variants: perception, imagination, and memory. For instance, we may not only see the visible appearance of a person or a building, but also recall or imagine it in a visual manner. The three types of experience share certain important features that are intimately linked to their common sensory character, many of which distinguish them from thought. Among these features are their apparent presentation of external objects or events (rather than propositions about them), their perspectival nature, that is that they present the world from a certain point of view, and their connection to one (or more) of the sense modalities, such as by having some modality- specific content and phenomenal character. But there are also important differences among the three types of sensory experiences. Most notably, there is usually taken to be a fundamental divide between perceptions, on the one hand, and recollections and imaginings, on the other. Perceptual experiences are typically taken to be distinct from imaginative and mnemonic ones in that they present objects with a certain sense of immediacy.
