Como con- secuencia de esto, el estrecho entre España y África se convierte, durante tres siglos, en una “frontera olvidada” —segun la expresión de Andrew C. Hess (1978)— , hasta que a finales del siglo xviii y durante el xix el interés colo- nial español apunta nuevamente a África, aunque bajo condiciones geopolí- ticas fundamentalmente diferentes a las de la temprana Edad Moderna. El “neocolonialismo” español culmina en dos guerras: la Guerra de África de 1859-1860 y la Guerra del Rif de 1921 a 1926. En este sentido, se puede hablar en particular de otro colonialismo principalmente por dos motivos: por una parte, el compromiso español en el Norte de África se ejecuta como un movimiento para compensar la pérdida del imperio colonial español en América; por otra, en ocasiones, la gran cercanía geográfica y cultural entre España y África hace ver al colonizador España como parte de África. Es sobre todo este aspecto identitario el que le otorga al discurso africano es- pañol una complejidad y contradicción que va mucho más allá del simple proyecto imperialista de la colonización del Norte de África1. Contra este telón de fondo, el objetivo del presente volumen es jalonar un vasto campo de investigación: el de la representación de las relaciones coloniales y poscoloniales entre España y el Norte de África, enfocadas prin- cipalmente desde la perspectiva española. A pesar de su inmensa trascen- dencia histórica, política, literaria y cultural, a ese tema no se le ha venido prestando mayor atención en España, Alemania y Estados Unidos por parte de diferentes disciplinas, ante todo la historiografía y las ciencias literarias y culturales, hasta el pasado reciente2. Partimos, por tanto, de la convicción de que, por medio del estudio científico de casos concretos, de un análisis dis- cursivo y de campo, debe surgir un amplio espectro de referencias españolas al Norte de África que se extendería temporalmente de la segunda mitad del siglo xviii hasta el presente inmediato y que abarcaría además de diferentes géneros (la relación de viajes, la crónica, el diario, la novela, la poesía lírica, el drama, el ensayo, el reportaje de prensa, el discurso político e historiográ- fico, etc.) también medios visuales antiguos y nuevos (pintura, fotografía, largometrajes y documentales, televisión, etc.). But Bonaparte revived the French ambition of undoing the British hold on India by landing in Egypt in 1798. He then failed to forge an alliance against the British with the grand Sharif of Mecca. Once back in France, his interest in developments in the interior of Arabia shows that he was simultaneously exploring the land route to India. In 1803 he instructed his consul in Baghdad, Olivier de Corancez, to get in touch with the Amir Saud ibn Abdelaziz, in case the latter would take Jeddah and thus complete the conquest of the Hedjaz.

Architectural Histories, +LVWRULHV 4(1): 18, pp. 1–17, DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5334/ah.201 RESEARCH ARTICLE À La Recherche De L’Espace Perdu: Architecture, Urban Fabric, and French Travelers to Antioch (1784–1914) Ümit Fırat Açıkgöz Ottoman Antioch, a marginalized outpost by the late 18th century, attracted French travelers thanks to its illustrious Roman, Early Christian, and crusader histories. To make sense of the city, these travelers relied either on previous travelogues or on their own observations of the built environment. This article sheds light on the inter-textual relationship among travelogues, and on how both the built environment of Ottoman Antioch and representations of the pre-Islamic city and its monuments shaped the travelers’ narratives. The dramatic contrast between the insignificance of Ottoman Antioch and the grandeur of the pre-Islamic city prompted the travelers to reflect on the glories of Greco-Roman antiquity and the ‘decadence of the Oriental civilizations’. I focus on four French travelers who visited Antioch between 1780 and 1914, and argue that they turned the state of the city’s architecture and urban fabric into a critical tool to imagine their historical connections to the region, reproduce the Orientalist stereotypes in circulation in Europe at the time, and, thereby setting the tone for the colonization of the region.     Legal Pluralism, Contracts, and Trade in the Ottoman Empire Cihan Artunç⇤ Job Market Paper November 15, 2013 Abstract Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, non-Muslim Ottomans paid large sums to acquire access to European law. These protégés came to dominate Ottoman trade and pushed Muslims and Europeans out of commerce. At the same time, the Ottoman firm remained primarily a small, family enterprise. The literature argues that Islamic law is the culprit. However, adopting European law failed to improve economic outcomes. This paper shows that the co-existence of multiple legal systems, “legal pluralism,” explains key questions in Ottoman economic history. I develop a bilateral trade model with multiple legal systems and first show that legal pluralism leads to underinvestment by creating enforcement uncertainty. Second, there is an option value of additional legal systems, explaining why non-Muslim Ottomans sought to acquire access to European law. Third, in a competitive market where a subpopulation has access to additional legal systems, agents who have access to fewer jurisdictions exit the market. Thus, forum shopping explains protégés’ dominance in trade. Billed as a scientific exploration, Ali Bey’s journey was commissioned by Carlos IV’s Prime Minister, Manuel Godoy, who viewed Badía as an agent of Spanish colonialism. The memoirs in which Badía recounts the details of his journey, plagued by elements of ambiguity and hyperbole, have sparked interest at telling historical junctures while vexing those who seek clear, unassailable meanings.
