Fordham University senior guard Bryan Smith was named a 2015 Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® nominee it was announced on December 3. Smith is one of 251 NCAA I, II, II and NAIA men and women basketball student-athletes nominated for the prestigious community service award that recognizes a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a com- mitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities. College sports information directors and basketball coaches across the country nominated players who exhibit exceptional leadership skills and an unwavering commitment to volunteerism. From the 158 NABC nominees and 93 WBCA nominees, distinguished voting panels will select two 10-member teams comprised of five student-athletes from the NCAA® Division I level and five student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. The final roster of 20 award recipients will be unveiled in February. “The accomplishments of student-athletes extend far beyond successes achieved on the court, and Allstate is proud to recognize this exceptional group of young men and women for the positive impact they are making in their communities,” said Pam Hollander, vice president of marketing for Allstate Insurance Company and a member of the 2015 NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® selection panels. “Their stories of powerful and selfless acts, shared by SIDs and coaches across the nation, represent the best of col- legiate student-athletes and serve as an inspiration to us all.” Smith, a 2014-2015 team captain, has been active in numerous community service projects with the men’s basketball program. These projects range from participating in an annual toy drive for a local clinic to running at Katie’s Run, a charity run to benefit The Katie McBride Foundation, to the 2014 Making Strides of Westchester, NY, breast cancer walk. For the third year, the Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams® help spotlight the off-the-court good works and service to others that often goes unnoticed and unrewarded. From creating organizations benefitting at-risk youth to volunteering overseas to help impoverished communities, there are countless remarkable stories of service among this year’s group of nominees. As full-time students and athletes, these players choose to dedicate their limited free time to improving the lives of those around them. Jackson and Bach have a long history together, starting in 1967 when Jackson was drafted by the New York Knicks and Bach was in his final season as the Fordham head coach. Jackson kept track of Bach as Bach moved to Penn State and then on to the NBA in the early 1980’s first with the and later as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls. Their paths crossed again when Jackson took over as head coach of Chicago in 1986 as he retained the services of Bach as

his defensive coach. The Bulls reaped the rewards of that partnership in 1991, winning the NBA title, the first of three straight championships for Chicago. But despite all the success, Jackson remembered Bach for a different reason. “John Bach was a character who truly is one of a kind. He was so proud of his Navy accomplish- ments and he loved to draw. At the beginning of the season when we did reports together for upcoming teams Johnny always had interesting diagrams on every report, headed off with a gargoyle or something that would bring a touch to the spirit.” Beside defensive strategy, Bach also left an impression on Jackson that had a Fordham connection. www.fordhamsports.com Fordham University Basketball Game Notes - 11 “One thing John Bach taught me to do when I became head coach of the Bulls was something he picked up from Vince Lombardi and I used it every year with my basketball team. Lombardi coached the freshman basketball team at Fordham and at the beginning of the year he lined the team up on the baseline, stood in front of them and said ‘Fordham University and God have ordained me to coach you guys and I want every one of you who is willing to be coached and accept my coaching to step across that line and so be it’.” “I use that because it’s an affirmation about being coached and being part of a team’” continued Jackson. “Johnny was a great team player and I take this award with a great amount of pride.” Jackson joins P.J. Carlesimo (2013) and Patrick Ewing (2012) as recipients of the Johnny Bach Award.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING: Fordham University’s home court, the Rose Hill Gymnasium which was named as one of the four “Cathedrals of College Basketball” by ESPN The Magazine, is the oldest gym still being used by an NCAA Division I basketball team. The 3,200-seat gym opened on January 16, 1925 for a game between Fordham and Boston College. The Rams took the opener 46-16 in a game refereed by one of the University’s most prominent alumni, “The Fordham Flash”, Frankie Frisch. Rose Hill underwent a $2 million renovation in the summer of 2002, with new lighting, new seating, a new public address system, and new scoreboards installed. The Gym was one of the largest on-campus facilities at the time it was built, earning the nickname “The Prairie” because of its large floor space. The original configuration had no end zone stands and a seating capacity of 2,100 but several standing room crowds of 6,000 were reported in the late 1920’s. Since its open- ing in 1925, the gym has seen numerous renovations, adding new seating, scoreboards and public address systems. The arena has been in continuous use by Fordham’s basketball teams since its opening with the exception of the World War II years, when it was used for a barracks. The Rose Hill Gym has been the site of many legendary college and high school basketball games including Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s final high school game and the 1988 Tolentine-Archbishop Molloy Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Championship game, billed by the New York Newsday as the “Best High School Game of the 80’s”. The Rose Hill Gym continues to host the CHSAA Championships annually and eleven years ago, former Ram Bevon Robin led Rice High School to the CHSAA Championship over Christ the King, led by Lamar Odom. The Rose Hill Gym has been named as one of the Top Ten arenas by USA Today and was featured in the 2011-12 ESPN The Magazine College Basketball issue as one of four Cathedrals of College Basketball.

WHAT’S NEXT?: The Rams will open their Atlantic 10 schedule by hosting another A-10 Rams, VCU, on Sunday, January 4, in the historic Rose Hill Gym at 1:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on the CBS Sports Network.

Today that happened as juniors Mandell Thomas (17 points, seven assists) and Ryan Rhoomes (11 points, nine rebounds) led the way as Fordham defeated Howard, 74-59, in the Rose Hill Gym. The success of the two juniors rubbed off on two Fordham freshmen as Christian Sengfelder and Eric Paschall also finished in double figures and redshirt freshman Antwoine Anderson dished out a career- high nine assists. Sengfelder led all Ram scorers with 19 points, shooting 8-14 from the field ,and he grabbed eight rebounds while Paschall finished with 15 points and six rebounds. The game was a story of two halves for Ford- ham, who shot 42.3% (11-26) in the first half while committing nine turnovers but rebounded in the sec- ond half to shoot 65.4% (17-26) and only turn the ball over five times. Fordham also did a better job from the free throw line than in the past few games, hitting 12 of its 13 charity shoots.
