An amendment to the Pasminco Area Plan to guide the redevelopment of the former Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter and Incitec Pivot Fertiliser sites at Boolaroo has been placed on public exhibition.Lake Macquarie City Council’s Manager Integrated Planning, Sharon Pope, said the land had already been zoned for commercial, mixed use, residential, environmental conservation and light industrial purposes in 2011. Having an up to date Area Plan is the next step forward to allow for private development to take place on the land. “The amended Pasminco Area Plan will provide comprehensive Pasminco 1970's development controls to steer development of the area. It addresses matters including contaminated land and remediation issues, road, pedestrian and cycleway links, as well as urban design guidelines, noise control, heritage conservation and landscaping requirements,” Ms Pope said. “This is an exceptional opportunity for 190 hectares of land to be developed for housing and employment opportunities in Lake Macquarie City, close to major roads, the railway line, shopping centres and recreation facilities.” The amended Area Plan is being jointly exhibited with a Planning Proposal that intends to rezone part of the former Incitec Pivot Fertiliser site to a residential zone. HBR NOVEMBER 2013 17 BUSINESS ADVICE Do you know your purpose in business?

Mark Hamilton McCosker Partners

Knowing this is important, if you don’t know, how can you communicate to your customers why they should choose you over your competitors. Working out the answer to this question then enables you to create a mission statement, which then forms the basis for a marketing strategy.

What was it like when you started out? When you first start a business you would have a reason why you thought it would work i.e. why you thought your business would be attractive to customers. Hence at that stage you would have had a purpose. That purpose could have been any of the following: • You felt your product was better than the competitors. • Your pricing strategy may be such that you would be a cheaper and more attractive alternative. • What you have to sell may be unique. Mark was well credentialed with excellent management experience but things started to sour very quickly with Richard commenting “he’s just not doing stuff”. When queried about ‘the stuff’ Richard explained that there is heaps of stuff to do and that Mark “with all his experience and credentials, should just know what to do”. Mark, on the other hand, thought he was doing a great job showing initiative by rationalising suppliers. He hadn’t been inducted into the business or been given any training or direction as Richard was rarely around. 26 HBR NOVEMBER 2013 MANUFACTURING Manufacturing in the Hunter: Challenges & Opportunities

Tony Cade - HunterNet

During 2013, we have witnessed a convergence of factors that have had a deleterious impact on the Hunter’s manufacturing sector. After experiencing sustained economic growth up to the end of 2013, manufacturers have had to deal with: • A high Australian dollar that worked against exports and increased the cost competitiveness of imports. • A downturn in the mining sector resulting in the deferral of major expansions / developments. • Political instability and uncertainty surrounding the Federal Government election and critical public policy areas including the Carbon Tax (CPRS) and the Mineral Rent Resource Tax (MRRT). • Weak consumer confidence. • Softening demand from key export markets (e.g. China). Whilst the regions manufacturing sector has been confronted with challenges in the past, rarely has it been faced with so many factors hitting the economy at basically the same time. MANUFACTURER HMA BOARD AWARD MORTELS SHEEPSKIN FACTORY OF THE YEAR Sponsored by Travelworld Newcastle - Hunter Travelgroup BAE SYSTEMS AUSTRALIA The HMA Board Award was presented to Mortels Sponsored by Downer Sheepskin Factory of Thornton. The Mortels brand started when Frank and Rita Mortel immigrated from the Netherlands in 1956 bringing with them the trade of shoe crafting, a trade that was passed down through the Mortel family for over 150 years. In 1958 they commenced making ugg boots. In 1992 Tony and Stephanie Mortel took over the reins of the business and have taken the business to new levels. The Board felt that Mortels has demonstrated a hunger for export in establishing an internationally competitive position that will benefit from the opportunity to further spread their wings.

Winners of the Manufacturer of the Year and HMA Board Award have won trips, sponsored by Travelword Newcastle – HTG and HMA to an International Trade Fair or Event of their choice in 2014.
