Sawfish: a Global Strategy for Conservation
Sawfish: A Global Strategy for Conservation Lucy R. Harrison | Nicholas K. Dulvy A Call to Conserve Sawfishes Simon Stuart Chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Like many of the earth’s natural resources, humankind has mistakenly viewed the ocean as having an infinite supply of reserves to satisfy our needs and wants. This has made the waters of our globe vulnerable to overexploitation and, as a consequence, many ocean species are now declining at an alarming and unsustainable rate. The sawfishes are one such group of species, and are now recognised as being among the most threatened marine species, facing a rapid descent to extinction if immediate action is not taken to address the severity of their plight. The wonderful morphology of these species, with their long, highly distinctive tooth-nosed snout, makes them a truly striking and iconic image of our seas. Unfortunately, this unique feature has sadly been the cause of their own ruin, being both easily entangled in net and highly-prized for medicinal and cultural purposes and sold as curios for the tourist trade. Other threats to the sawfishes are common to many marine species and include overfishing and habitat destruction. As a result, sawfishes are now one of the most threatened families of marine species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. Conservation must be built on sound knowledge and scientific research. The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) is a science-based network of more than 8,000 volunteer experts from over 160 countries. SSC members are deployed in over 130 Specialist Groups, and it is one of these groups – the IUCN Shark Specialist Group – that has prioritised sawfishes for urgent conservation action and has ably led the way in designing a focused global strategy to provide the best possible scientific basis to secure the survival of these iconic species. -

p- 831 F;Ic: Nf'S Gen- INDIVIDUAL REPORTS OF THE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATIONAL PROBLEMS IN NATIONAL PARKS Ric NP5 Gen. Individual Reports of Members of the Committee on Educational Problems in National Parks, Together with Minutes of Early Meetings of Committee HE specific recommendations resulting from studies of the Committee on Educational Problems Tin National Parks have already been presented to the Secretary of the Interior through reports of the Committee under date of January 9, 1929, and November 27, 1929. These results were based upon extensive studies by members of the Committee working individually and in groups through a period of approximately two years. In the course of these investigations much material of value was accumulated by individual members. Each of these reports was transmitted at the earliest possible moment to National Park Service for use in development of various aspects of the educational pro- gram. In order that the data in these separate reports, and the expressions of opinion of the Com- mittee in the earlier minutes, may be of record with the office of the Park Service, it was decided by the Committee to have these documents put into permanent form by means of gathered proof sheets. The following pages representing work of the seven members of the Committee on Educational Problems in National Parks, while not approved by the Committee as a whole, have the authority of confidential expression by the individual members. It is believed that much of importance will be developed in use of the material. The reports are arranged in alphabetical order according to authors, and in general alphabetically by subjects touched by the authors. -

VAN DER MAAS AN INTEGRATIVE FRAMEWORK Strategy implementation is of high importance to organization science and practice, due to its direct relation to organizational performance, its high complexity, and high Strategy Implementation in failur e rate. This PhD thesis is about strategy implementation and the reasons for success ARNOUD A. VAN DER MAAS - ARNOUD A. VAN Strategy Implementation in a Small Island Community or failure. Despite its apparent importance for organizational performance, research on a Small Island Community the subject remains rather limited. Relevant literature exists but is fragmented among other fields of management research. Especially research in non-North American and non- Western European contexts remains scarce. In addition, little attention has been paid to An Integrative Framework strategy implementation within developing economies and small island communities. This PhD thesis investigates strategy implementation and its reasons for success or failure. It reports on a qualitative survey of 55 executives with strategy implementation responsibilities within 44 public and private organizations in the small Caribbean island community of Curaçao. The study demonstrates that strategy implementation is a highly complex organizational phenomenon which is influenced by a large number of factors ERIM related to the process, content and context of an implementation effort. The present study integrates a number of independent streams of research to develop a comprehensive and integrative framework for strategy implementation, which is grounded in implementation practice. An initial taxonomy of 24 themes clustered under five meta-themes of space, lifestyle, emotions, symbolism, and social-political relations is provided, together with some proposals for further research. Keywords: abductive method; art; islandness; rock music; social construction © 2012 Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada Introduction: Rock Music and Islands: Looking for a Link “[…] in an age when nothing is physically inaccessible or unknowable, the dream of the small, remote and undiscovered place has become so powerful” (Gillis, 2004: 148) This article presents a first exploration, qualitative in character, of how rock music lyrics and song titles portray islands, islandness, and island features. It examines the island aspects of a socio-cultural trend expressed in as far-reaching a medium as that of rock music. Here, we adopt a broad definition of ‘rock music’, including different expressions of this genre, starting with the emergence of rock in the late 1950’s to early 1960’s, and moving towards more current expressions including art rock, progressive rock, punk and reggae (Wicke, 1990; Charlton, 2003).
