During the afternoon and evening hours of July 18, 2001, numerous supercell thunderstorms (mainly hail producers) developed over the area. One such thunderstorm produced baseball-to-softball sized hail in Broadus, MT. Numerous car windshields and house windows were smashed. Vinyl siding from houses and leaves from trees were stripped. A piece of roof was torn off the Fellowship Hall Church on SR 237. Marshall County Guntersville 03 1500CST 0 0 2K 0 Thunderstorm Wind (G50) A few trees and power lines were blown down in the city of Guntersville. Lightning from the storms caused numerous locations to be without power for several hours. Lauderdale County Lexington 04 1600CST 0 1 0 0 Lightning A man was struck by lightning near Lexington. The extent of his injuries was unknown. Lauderdale County 5 SW Florence 04 1606CST 0 0 2K 0 Thunderstorm Wind (G50) Trees were blown down west and southwest of Florence along the Tennessee River. A few trees were also blown down near Waterloo. Colbert County Muscle Shoals 04 1620CST 0 0 1K 0 Thunderstorm Wind (G50) A few trees and power lines were knocked down in and around Muscle Shoals. Additional trees and some power lines were knocked down south and southwest of the city. Three boat houses and some boats were damaged at the Goose Lake Colony off SR 79. Several boats broke loose in the high wind and damaged each other and the boat houses. The storms exited southeast Alabama just after 6 pm CDT. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for 27 separate counties with a total of 31 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued during the event. During each of the 31 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, damaging wind gusts occurred. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down across north and central Alabama. Several locations received more concentrated damage than others, but generally the damage occurred in a sporadic manner where varying storm intensity concentrated higher wind gusts. No injuries were reported during this event with respect to the wind damage. Lauderdale County Waterloo 05 1143CST 0 1 0 0 Lightning A man was struck by lightning near Waterloo. This heavy rainfall caused many roads to become covered with water and temporarily impassable. Marshall County Arab 05 1230CST 0 0 3K 0 Flash Flood 1330CST A few roads in and near the city of Arab were flooded and some were temporarily impassable. Morgan County Countywide 05 1300CST 0 0 3K 0 Flash Flood 1400CST Very heavy rainfall in a short period of time covered many roads with high water. This water made many roads temporarily impassable.
