MILNE’S HIGH SCHOOL JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER

A community where the individual matters and expectations are high

As we end another successful session, it gives me great pleasure to report that there continues to be great progress at Milne’s High School. This has been a very busy term with highlights including trips, activity days, the senior phase leavers’ ceremony, inductions, Baxter’s challenge, sports day, music performances and many more opportunities for our young people to achieve. Our annual Awards Ceremony, held last week, was a fantastic occasion for the school, being held in the Public Institute, was a real bonus. In terms of improvements made this session, we set about developing a more explicit staff leadership programme and this is having a great impact on building capacity. We have continued to build on existing business links and introduced new opportunities which have resulted in a wide range of exciting projects to help develop the young workforce which is a local and national priority. We have also benefited from the Pupil Equity Fund to employ Mr MacLeod as an additional DHT to develop a strategy to bring together many existing ventures such as Rights Respecting Schools, Growth Mindset and nurture training. This has already had an impact on making the school more inclusive. We have observed many improvements to learning and teaching with all departments evidencing the impact of more consistent learning conversations and regular tracking which is not only providing pupils with regular feedback and interventions to ensure attainment but has also developed confidence of staff in reporting on levels across the school. A recent visit by the local authority yielded that we have many strengths including the way that wellbeing is naturally embedded throughout our school community. Furthermore, they particularly noted the calm, welcoming and positive relationships between students and staff; the collaborative nature of all our staff team and how the parent council continues tobea strong supporter of the school as co-drivers of policy change and helping to create the School Improvement Plan. Re-organising the Student Voice Ambassadors has resulted in pupils reporting that they have a greater say in decision making and on the whole feel that their views are taken into account. We have a very ambitious improvement plan for next session as we constantly strive to offer the best experience for our young people. Subject departments will continue implementing changes to maximise the opportunities for student success. The attainment of our top 20% of students remains our biggest priority and this will continue to be a focus of our action plans. We are revisiting our vision, values and purpose with the aim of streamlining this in conjunction with the Council three year improvement plan. Parents can contribute to the discussion on what the vision should be by visiting https:// www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/36QBBYV. We aim to continue to develop the capacity of staff to support and offer quality advice for our young people. Our evaluations this session have highlighted that clarity is needed on the school’s response to bullying and that level 6 literacy and numeracy require a greater focus. Our Parent Council and Maths department have begun a task aimed at helping parents and their children learn together and will continue to try to engage more parents out with the parent council. So once again, we have a busy improvement agenda and we look forward to meeting all the challenges that this will bring. The School Improvement Plan and Standards and Quality Report will be available in the new term by request at the school office or direct from our website. We are fortunate to have a dedicated and hardworking senior leadership team continue to receive high praise for their hard work, commitment and dedication to the school but the new term will start without

On Saturday 2 June and Sunday 3 June, twelve Duke of Edinburgh Bronze participants took part in their Practice Expedition. The groups walked from Whiteash Monument to Spey Bay, camped overnight at the campsite and then walked from Spey Bay to Earth Pillars. Morale was kept high with some sing- songs, a campfire and of course some toasting of marshmallows. Well done to all participants on the successful completion of this expedition. The qualifier will take place in September.

Flexible Pathways As part of providing flexible pathways for students at Milne's High School, several students took part in Outfit Moray's EnerG strand abseiling/rock climbing event at Cummingston Stacks on Monday 23 April 2018. The focus of the event was to develop students interpersonal skills and qualities with a focus on communication, confidence and motivation. All participating students’ experienced an individual challenge to overcome and it was particularly pleasing for staff to see how they were able to encourage each other to achieve their goals. Well done all!

From Wednesday 9 May to Friday 11 May, a large proportion of the S3 year group went to the Badaguish Outdoor Centre in Glenmore to take part in a variety of outdoor activities. These ranged from staff to instructor led and included problem solving activities that relied on communication and co-operation. Everyone participated in an outdoor activity from learning how to windsurf or abseil to facing their fears on the high level ropes course at Treezone. During the three day experience, the emphasis was on challenge and team working and our pupils were certainly encouraging and supporting each other throughout all of the activities. Our outdoor education partners were full of praise for the high level of commitment , support of each other as well as being fine ambassadors for the school. Paris —May 2018 At 12.15 am on Tuesday 8 May, 38 pupils along with 5 staff set out on, what ended up being, a 23 hour bus journey to Paris. While in Paris, the group went to Cité des Sciences, a cruise on the Seine in a Bateau Mouche and up to the top of Montparnasse Tower (a 210 meter office Skyscraper with a fantastic view of Paris). The following day was spent at Disneyland Paris and Studio Park going on rides, watching the parade and staying to watch the closing fireworks display. There were many different highlights on the trip including: the high temperatures of 29oC, the sing songs on the bus and the rollercoasters at Disneyland. It was a fantastic trip where everyone enjoyed the experience, even with the arrival back at Milne’s High School being 5.00 am on the Saturday morning. London —May 2018

For Activities Week, 49 pupils and 5 members of staff ventured down to the big city of London. What an experience! A fun packed week included trips to the theatre to see an array of fantastic musicals; Wicked, The Lion King, School of Rock and Matilda. As well as this we cruised down the river Thames and saw the fabulous sights of the city from the London Eye. A trip to Madame Tussauds let our pupils rub shoulders with some of their favourite stars and a trip to The Harry Potter Studio gave the opportunity for our pupils (and some teachers) to release their inner wizards and witches. We soon quickly adapted to the hustle and bustle of the city, jumping on and off the tube as if we were locals. Ending the week with a spot of shopping on Oxford Street, we really did get the full London experience. A week that I am sure will be remembered by all involved, packed full of activities and laughter, exhaustion and sore feet! Thank you to everyone that made it such a memorable experience – I am sure each and every one of us will take away something from London.

In early June our new S6 students spent three days at Badaguish, Aviemore taking part in team building activities and leadership workshops. The team building involved rock climbing, gorge swimming and stand-up paddle boarding as well as physical and mental challenges set by a visiting group from the Royal Marines. The hot summer sunshine made the exertions of these activities challenging but all students put in an excellent performance, encouraging and supporting each other throughout, never once giving up. On the first evening, workshops on time management, role models/leadership, school values and vision were led by Milne’s High School staff. On the second evening Jayne Porter from SDS delivered a workshop centred on Buzz Training which allows people to consider their personality traits and preferred behaviours. Awareness of these individual qualities can help when considering a future career. Jason Inglis from RBS then led a very informative session on interview skills. Many useful tips were gleaned and the mock interviews and role play section proved entertaining and informative.

Travel and Tourism On the 27 April, the travel and tourism class participated in a challenge to create an inspiring tourism marketing campaign for Moray. Three groups took part and were each given a different town within Moray, choosing from , Lossiemouth and . This challenge was set by VisitScotland with the involvement of Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Moray and Gordon Castle. The groups had to use their own prior knowledge as well as conduct research on these places and they used their creative skills to produce their marketing campaign for the selected towns. The presentations were judged by representatives from DYW Moray, Visit , Moray Speyside Tourism and Gordon Castle. The Chief Executive of VisitScotland, Malcolm Roughead, visited the school on the Friday 8 June to present prizes to the winning group of Alix Buckham, Suzie Hunter, Kerri Owen, Courtney Edwards and Lucy Page for their fantastic marketing campaign on Aberlour. They showed great teamwork, confidence and knowledge during this task and were a credit to Milne’s High School. Visit us on the web: www.milneshighschool.org.uk Baxters Soup Challenge We were delighted to work, once again, with the team from Baxters on our annual Soup Challenge. This year’s challenge was to produce a soup for the Baxters ‘Super Good’ range, a range of soups whose ingredients promote good health. Baxters launched the brief to all S2 pupils in March. Work then began in the Home Economics Department to create an innovative soup recipe to trial and develop. Working in teams pupils investigated ingredients and ideas before coming up with a recipe. Teams had to work to a strict budget and produce all the nutritional information and other relevant information for the label. This information was then used by the Business Studies Department to create the label using illustrations produced in Art. In Music pupils invented and recorded an advertising jingle for their soup and in Science they analysed soup ingredients. Category winners were; Home Economics – Soup Development – ‘Souper Noodles’ Freya Hughson, Emma Morrison. Science – Food Analysis – ‘Mental Lentils’ Hugh Allen, Deveron Hildreth, Ben Rattray, Hannah Spooner Spence, Rory Topp . Music – Jingle –‘ FFLN the Bowl’ – Finlay Downey, Faith Hopkins, Leacsaidh Lucas, Nicole Reith. Baxters were impressed with the standard of work achieved. They had difficulty selecting winners but in the end decided to award joint first prize to two teams. The overall winners were ‘The Souper Noodles’ comprising of Freya Hughson and Emma Morrison and ‘The Soup Queens’ Dionne Campbell and Megan Keddie. Baxters have invited the overall winning teams to spend the day with the Food Product Development team working on their soup before seeing it canned during a factory tour. A visit to the visitors centre to enjoy the famous Baxters Pancake will round off a fabulous day. We are very grateful to Baxters for their continued support, to our judges, Warren Lawson, Kevin Black, Louise Shepherd and Lizzie Sharp and everyone involved in making the project a success. S5 Induction

Tuesday 5 June, saw our annual S5 Induction programme take place with support from partners, MJD Systems, Skills Development Scotland, Rona McCrone (School Nurse), Martin Kirwan (Moray Council) and Sue Davies (tsi) . Pupils attended a series of workshops providing information on cyber security, positive destinations, health, stress management and resilience and interview skills with the aim of preparing them for the challenging year ahead. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive with all feeling that they had gained useful advice on a range of issues. This term, work has been underway at Milne’s High School to gain our Bronze Award for the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award. Through this award, UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens. Our enthusiastic team have come up with an action plan for next session to raise awareness of children’s human rights and how this can be embedded in our ethos and culture. Look out for posters around the school and for updates on our work in the new term. As part of our work on Rights Respecting Schools Award, Miss McLennan has been working with the group on a project with a school in Lebanon looking at gender equality. As part of the British Council Connecting Classrooms initiative, the group looked at various issues surrounding gender, looking at careers, domestic roles, personality traits and childcare roles. We compared results with our partner school and enjoyed a video call to speak to ask questions about their culture and gender roles in Lebanon. This has challenged stereotypes and made pupils think more critically about gender roles in society.

S3 College Taster Day

On Thursday 22 June all of the S3 pupils travelled to Moray College to take part in a taster day.
