"Once upon a time Sergio Leone" by Dominique Vautrin The Cinémathèque Française pays a heartfelt tribute to this legendary director. Born to a father who was an actor and silent film director and a mother who was also an actress, Sergio Leone began his career as an assistant director and signed his first western, "For a Fistful of Dollars" in 1964. From his exceptional image composition, he brings a visual, narrative and sound revolution to the myth of the American West. Ennio Morricone, his former classmate, is never far away and this will remain one of the most fruitful collaborations in film. In this West, which he portrays as realistic, multi-ethnic, dirty, poor and suffering from exacerbated violence, Sergio Leone sublimates his actors and actresses. The strength of his gaze transcends the western and the music sometimes comes to the forefront. Then comes the masterpiece "Once upon a time in America", inspired by "The Hoods", a novel about these New York Jewish gangsters. Sergio Leone stages the life of Noodles, (Robert de Niro) and the nostalgic fragments of his memory. The exhibition is divided into several themes where one can wander at will in the imagination of the filmmaker whose past is explored through personal objects and/or films. The small rooms at the entrance are dedicated to the family history (photo gallery) and various objects of his daily life such as his office chair. The western atmosphere set in a wooden frame is rather successful. Skylights for viewing film clips, drawings, posters, photographs, models, props and costumes enrich the exhibition. The last big play is dedicated to the film "Once upon a time in America" before a smooth release on his latest projects. Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola, Tarantino, they all owe him a debt.
