Barbara Higdon Graceland Forever Champions Homecoming 1930-2011 Campaign Launched of Character 2011 Revisited F rom the President very once in a while you get a phone call and it feels like someone punched you in the Estomach. I was in Houston with my family on December 30 when I received a call informing me that Barbara Higdon had passed away. I knew treatment had not been going well, but I still felt that punch in the stomach. I felt over- whelmed with grief and immediately thrust into another place in time. It is that highly meditative place, a place of respect and quiet repose. It is a place of prayer where you thank God that you knew this person. That was the way it was with me when I heard about Barbara’s passing. Barbara was a highly competent person. She always made a positive difference in everything she did. Her strength and compassion drove this univer- sity forward, as our first full-time woman president and as a true Gracelander who always answered the call when she was needed. One of the great things about Barbara was that you didn’t have to wait until her death to celebrate her life. The differences she made every day were so profound that they inspired you to frequently celebrate her gifts to higher education, to the causes of peace and justice and her enduring love for Graceland. In that special place in time, with my family in Houston, I paused and remembered being with Barbara in recent times and feeling that I was sitting near greatness. I celebrated that, even before she passed. Please read more about Barbara on pages 6-7, and visit our website link noted with the story so you can read the excellent obituary prepared by Barbara’s daughter Beth. Also, as you peruse this issue of Horizons please pay special attention to the stories and photos on pages 2-5 where we celebrate the Graceland Forever capital campaign launch at Homecoming last fall, and lay out the goals of the most ambitious cam- paign in Graceland history. I hope you will join us in this effort to make our university the best that it can be. We are surely challenged by the uncertain times in which we live, but I am certain Graceland will continue to move forward with the help of alumni and friends like you.

“Being a part of the Graceland Fine Arts Department as a Studio Art major has been one of the most challenging yet deeply rewarding experiences of my life. From day one I found a community of professors and students that not only welcomed me with open arms but also genuinely wanted to help me succeed. The art faculty at Graceland are one of a kind. Each being artists themselves, they hold high standards and push each student to excel academically and artistically. I have been faced with a vast multitude of scholarly problems that had to be solved through research, experimentation, and dedication. I find that my artwork continues to be more and more successful as well as my creative thought processes, which, in addition, I am able to apply to other academic areas. Graceland Art Department has a phenomenal faculty, a genuine sense of community, and an academically successful student body. I am proud to say that I am an art major at Graceland.” Annie Arnold (’12) Wapello, Iowa
