2 CoSIDA Code of Ethics

ETHICS (eth’iks) noun, plural. 1. (construed as singular or plural) A system of moral principles: the ethics of a culture. 2. The rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc.; Medical ethics; Christian ethics. 3. Moral principles, as of an individual; his ethics forbade betrayal of a confidence. 4. (usually construed as singular). That branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions. Random House Dictionary of English Language FORWARD In order for members of College Sports Information Directors of America to enjoy professional status, it is imperative that a viable Code of Ethics be observed. This Code of Ethics must embrace and reflect the high ideals and moral fiber of the edu- cational institution which the Sports Information Director serves. It is essential that the Sports Information Director conduct and discharge his/her duties and responsibilities with dedication, integrity, sincerity, and respect of his/her constituency (peers) as a representative of an academic institution. Members who do not wish to meet these basic responsibilities have no place in CoSIDA and such detractors should be referred to the Committee on Ethics for appropriate disciplinary action. Membership in CoSIDA is a privilege, not a right.

39 College Sports Information Directors of America Student-Athlete Award Programs ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAMS AS SELECTED BY CoSIDA

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large and women’s at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divi- sions. Football consists of just first and second teams.

To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible. ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HALL OF FAME CoSIDA established the Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1988 to honor former college student-athletes who have excelled in their professions and made substantial contributions to their communities. To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, a candidate either had to be an Academic All-America® team member who graduated at least 10 years ago, or fall into the honorary category. Honorary inductees are eligible candidates who competed prior to the establishment of the Academic All-America program in their sport. The Hall of Fame is an offshoot of CoSIDA’s core Academic All-America program, which is sponsored by ESPN the Magazine. CoSIDA recognizes over 800 athletes annually as Academic All-Americas, and also selects in excess of 2,000 an- nually for Academic All-District honors. There have been 93 inductees since the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame held its first induction in 1988.
