This order consists of all the moths and butterflies. Cutworm moths are common throughout the world. In Canada and the United States over three thousand species are represented, from the Arctic tundra to the arid deserts of southwestern United States. Many species are found in eastern North America, but the family is best represented in the mountains and on the plateaus of western North America. CLASSIFICATION AND NOMENCLATURE In zoology, classification is the systematic arrangement of animals into related groups and categories, and nomenclature is the system of names given to these groups. The cutworm moths are insects that belong in the class Insecta. Insecta is divided into several orders: Diptera, the true flies: Hymenoptera. the wasps, bees, and ants: Coleoptera. the beetles, and so on. The order Lepidoptera includes all the moths and butterflies. Each order is divided into a number of families, and the Noctuidae family, which includes all the cutworm moths, is a family of the Lepidoptera. -
2015 Bird Damage Management in Connecticut EA Supplement
SUPPLEMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT: REDUCING BIRD DAMAGE IN THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Wildlife Services May 2015 INTRODUCTION An environmental assessment (EA) was prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Wildlife Services (WS) program, in cooperation with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP) Wildlife Division, to analyze the potential impacts to the quality of the human environment from resolving or alleviating damage to agriculture, property, natural resources and threats to human health and safety caused by birds in the State of Connecticut (USDA 2013). The EA evaluated the need for bird damage management and assessed potential impacts on the human environment of five alternatives to address that need. WS’ proposed action in the EA implements an integrated damage management program to fully address the need to manage bird damage and threats while minimizing impacts to the human environment. The EA analyzed the effects of WS’ activities to reduce damage and threats associated with resident and migratory bird species (USDA 2013). PURPOSE The purpose of the EA will remain as addressed in section 1.1 of the EA (USDA 2013). This Supplement to the EA examines potential environmental impacts of WS’ program as it relates to: 1) new information that has become available from research findings and data gathering since the issuance of the Decision and FONSI in 2013; 2) the inclusion of Canada geese (Branta canadensis), rock (feral) pigeons (Columba livia), European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), and house (English) sparrows (Passer domesticus) management activities to protect agriculture, property, natural resources and human health and safety. -

Governor • Trudy Coxe, Secretary • Peter C Webber, Commissioner EXECUTIVE SUMMARY - 1994 Lake Ouinsipamond Monitoring Report A lake monitoring survey of Lake Quinsigamond was conducted on August 30 and 31,1994 as part of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management's (DEM) Lakes and Ponds Program. The purpose of the survey was to (1) provide updated data on physical/chemical water quality, aquatic vegetation, and general watershed characteristics, and (2) identify management options for consideration in the DEM capital budget The limitations of this study (ie., limited sampling parameters, single sampling episode) constrain the extent to which conclusions and recommendations can be developed from the data and analyses in this report However, problems identified included: (1) nutrient loading from Billings Brook and North inlet, (2) high specific conductance levels from Coal Mine Brook and O'Hara's Brook, (3) structural improvements needed at dam structures and at Lake Park Beach, (4) excessive macrophyte growth in many coves, including several non- native nuisance species. Management recommendations are as follows: (1) Target Pollution Sources: a) Sources of high total phosphorus measurements at Billings Brook and North inlet should be investigated for remediation. b) To determine potential pollution sources leading to unusually high specific conductance measurements, more in-depth investigation and testing of Coal Mine Brook and O'Hara's Brook should be conducted. -
