New Zealand Olympians & Paralympians
New Zealand Olympians & Paralympians New Zealand’s first Olympic sailing representatives were Peter Mander and Jack Cropp in 1956 - and they won gold in the Sharpie. Since then, New Zealand has won a total of 22 Olympic medals (9 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze), and are yet to get the country's first Paralympic sailing medal. New Zealand is ranked the ninth-best performing Olympic yachting nation ever. This is a great feat, considering New Zealand missed out on the first 56 years of competition - yachting became an Olympic sport in 1900 and has appeared at every Olympic Games since 1908. New Zealanders competed at the first demonstration Paralympic sailing event in the Sonar and finished fifth at Atlanta 1996. At the 2000 Games, New Zealand was represented in both the 2.4mR and the Sonar, and in 2012 NZ had the first SKUD 18 team take part in the Paralympics. The race format for the Paralympic sailing events was essentially the same as the Olympic Games, although all events were fleet racing, and there was no medal race. 2016 Olympics & Paralympics, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Team Leader Jez Fanstone Andrew Brown, Hamish Willcox, Jez Fanstone, Coaches Jim Maloney, John Cutler, Mark Howard, Nathan Handley, Peter Nicholas Olympic Project Manager Caroline Brisebois Doctor Craig Panther Team Physiotherapist Jude Spiers Rules Advisor Jack Lloyd Class Sailors Finishing Position Men's 49er Blair Tuke & Peter Burling GOLD Women's 49erFX Alex Maloney & Molly Meech SILVER Women's 470 Jo Aleh & Polly Powrie SILVER Laser Sam Meech BRONZE Nacra Gemma Jones & -
